    Red Sox get Beckett!

Boston got (or is getting after a physical) Josh Beckett from the Marlins. Last report I heard had Boston taking Lowell and his 18 million remaining over two years, and giving Florida SS prospect Hanley Ramirez, P prospect Anibal Sanchez and another as yet unnamed minor league pitcher. I for one am thrilled with this deal. I have been reading about Hanley's "maturity" problems for two years now. It also ends the suspense for me of just who the Sox were shopping last year. We in the Boston area kept hearing all about Dustin Pedroia, Hanley Ramirez, Kelly Shoppach (again), John Lester, and Jon Papelbon. Hopefully they don't trade too many more prospects and wind up like the last group did.

We definitely need a #1 starter with Pedro gone (no disrespect to Curt, but he's not exactly in the prime of health).

As someone who doesn't pay the Red Sox high ticket prices, I don't mind them taking on Lowell's salary -- I'll keep watching them for free from CT.

I can't afford to go to Fenway either. I wouldn't pay those prices if I made 20,000 more per year. But I do buy hats, shirts, and other cr@p with the logo on it. The occasional pack of baseball cards too. I agree, we desperately need a solid #1. Curt hopefully can still pitch effectively and maybe Clement will have a good year.

Turns out the Red Sox also pick up Guillermo Mota in the deal.

I remember him as a fireballing reliever with the Dodgers. He was. He had an ERA near 2.00 from the start of 2003 until the day he got traded in July 2004.

But since being traded to the Marlins, his ERA's gone up to 4.74. I'll have to look at the underlying numbers to see what's up.

I don't have any bad associations with him in my memory. Same as you actually. Powerful reliever who fell off the map. Maybe he'll come around on a team that is commited to winning. If not, we still need someone who can take up some of the slack. The 'pen was miserable last season.

Why must the marlins do this to me after every good year. They dismantle the team and expect to get fans
