    Red Sox

    >The deal with the Sox at short is that Hanley Ramirez is expected to be ready by 2006 (if not sooner), so it was expected that they wouldn't sign Cabrera to a multi-year deal. If he didn't want to take a one year deal, they'd let him slip away and get someone like Vizquel, Barry Larkin, or Cristian Guzman (perish the thought!) to keep the sit in for a year.

I forgot about Hanley Ramirez. Anybody have a problem with with Pokey Reese for a year at short? And putting our money elsewhere.

I absolutely loved Vizquel in his prime -- watching him field in the playoffs in the 90s was awesome. But the idea that the Giants spent $12M+ for 3 years for him (he'll be 40 at the end of the contract) seems crazy.

Pokey @ Short would be good stop-gap; If Cabrera can sign for 1 year, that would be ideal.
That would leave Belhorn @second & more money for Varitek who we absolutely have to sign.

I'd let Pedro walk (sorry Clay), Sign Lowe (he got better once his sinker had a real infield behind him), and maybe sign a Pavano-type.

Also, sorry to see Kapler go to Japan, he was an excellent role-player. Hopefully we will sign Dave Roberts.

    Nomar who?

As a fan I've really enjoyed Pedro since we got him from Montreal. But I wonder why all the "experts" say we're going to sign Pedro but not Lowe.

I was really impressed by Lowe in the 2003 ALDS, and again the 2004 Playoffs of course. I wouldn't be totally surprised if we let Lowe go and he turns in a better year than Pedro -- or kills us in the playoffs. Especially if Pedro gets hurt.

Assuming Lowe is significantly less expensive, I don't know why anyone thinks he'll end up with the Sox. He is only 1 year younger than Pedro, but seems like keeping him away from the Yankees should also be on our list.
