Try this -- have a lousy team for a year, and get a high draft pick. Let's say you get lucky and get the #1 pick in the draft.
Step two -- trade the pick to the team below you in the draft. You should be able to get their #1 + a 3rd + miscellaneous.
Step three -- repeat through the rest of the draft. For variety, start trading for a #1 this year and a #1 next year, throwing in some of the #3's you got to make the deals fly.
When you're done with the draft, you'll have 6 or 8 #1 picks for the next year or two, plus a nice bunch of misc pick.
Now, pick whatever players you can fit under your cap from other teams and buy them outright with #1 draft choices. You should have no difficulty buying whoever you want. Make sure to buy people with cheap contracts, but don't worry if they're up for renewal next year -- you don't need to keep any.
Win the SuperBowl.
After the year, release every player who's asking for astronomical salaries.
Take the #1's you have left and repeat.
After awhile you'll routinely have 15 or 16 first round picks every year. You'll be able to maintain this, win most every Super Bowl, and keep a healthy bank account without problem.
The AI for individual trades is pretty good, but there needs to be some sort of limit for the number of trades in a draft, or an escalating adjustment as you make more trades. In the NFL, teams just don't make more than a couple of trades for each day in the draft.
Sure, you can just not do it, but it sure would be better if the game actually worked more like the NFL.
