    Instant replay

We've had discussion in here some time ago. While I'm indifferent to instant replay and fine if they want to Institute it, I loathe this stupid "challenge" system. Why make getting the play correct a new strategic element to the game? They couldn't have done worst with it.

Not enough complaints about this yet. Maybe it'll not be a big deal until it is type thing.

The NFL and college football use a challange system, so I guess fans are used to that and take it for granted that that's how replay should work.

I agree with you that it's a bad way to handle instant replay, but then again, I'm not sure that there's really a good way.

simple as throwing a guy in the booth upstairs. all close/questionable calls are reviewed, signal sent to ump if a call is in question. Doesn't take long to review the calls or to at least know if one is going to take some time and a delay is needed. Enough time in between plays in baseball to quickly vet them. This doesn't need to be rocket science. Basically after the 7th the challenge system is out and its in the umps hands...if the umps can handle the most important parts of the game than an extra ump doing just replay could handle it in its entirety. I fugging hate how baseball finds a way to make everything they do stupid.

Agree with Dickay about instant replay but not with his usage of the superlative in the first post - like nails on a chalkboard.

Yep, just get the damn calls right. You'd think it'd be that simple.

It's inevitable that it would happen, but they will probably screw it up like they did with tennis. They should review every close call, period.

    Re: Instant replay

In any sport, if the goal is to actually get the calls right, just reviewing plays that are challanged while limiting the number of challanges a team has doesn't really make sense.

Of course, if you allow unlimited challanges, then coaches and managers will have no incentive not to challange every play. But I think I'd let them do it, but penalize them for unsuccessful challanges. In football, it would be pretty easy--an unsuccessful challange results in a delay of game penalty. Not sure what would be appropriate in other sports, though.

Even better would be just to do away with challanges, and instead have a replay official at every game who has the power to stop play and review any call.

Exactly....not every play is close and needs to be reviewed. But the few that are should not rely on if there is a challenge left or not. Sports is absolutes. You win or you lose. The ball is in or the ball is out. It's a catch or it's not a catch. It's fair or foul. Not "it could be fair, do you want to use your last challenge? When a city burns because its sports team had no challenges left, things may change!
