    Keep Clam: The Seattle Mariners

New computer and a fresh copy of BM2013 means it's new dynasty time.

I'm going to start with the 1977 Seattle Mariners. The goal is to not lose money & become competitive within five years.

Re: Keep Clam: The Seattle Mariners

    Time to scout the team.

A collection of has-been's, never-were's & wanna-be's with a smattering of kids may lead to a long summer in Seattle.

Re: Keep Clam: The Seattle Mariners

    March 8th, 1977

I send 1B Joe Lis & P Mike Keckich to the Dodgers for C Johnny Oates. Barring injury, neither Lis or Keckich were going to make the club. I clear some salary and add a veteran backstop.

    March 11th, 1977

1B Bob Robertson will miss the first 2-3 weeks of the season with a knee injury. Bob is one of the few legitimate power threats on the club.

    March 26th, 1977

Young cornerman Danny Meyer will miss most of the season with a hip injury. The 24yo Meyer was expected to see time at all four corner positions.

    March 29th, 1977

I trade P Dick Pole & $50,000 to the Reds for C Don Werner. Werner will report to AA.

    April 1st, 1977

I cut salary and add bats when I trade LF Leroy Stanton, C Skip Jutze & RP John Montague to the Phillies for veteran RF Ollie Brown & LF Jerry Martin. Both Brown and Martin will join the team in Kansas City in time for the season opener.

Re: Keep Clam: The Seattle Mariners

The Mariners win their first game, only 161 more to go.

Dave Collins has the honor of rapping out the Mariners first base hit. Collins scores the teams first run the very next at bat, when Bill Stein hits the Mariners first home run, also knocking in the first RBI's.

Glenn Abbot threw six strong inning to garner the first victory for a Mariner pitcher.

After the game, Dave Collins reports hip discomfort, and is placed on the DL. He is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. OF Carlos Lopez is called up from AAA in his place.

Re: Keep Clam: The Seattle Mariners

The next two games don't go as well.

Vida Blue holds the Mariners to one run and strikes out 10. Before today's game, OF Rupert Jones is placed on the 15-day DL, with a shoulder injury. OF Puchy Delgado is recalled from AAA to take his roster spot.

Re: Keep Clam: The Seattle Mariners

The Rangers sweep us and jump to an early lead in the AL West.

Doyle Alexander gives up only 2 runs on 12 hits, as the Rangers score early and often.

Re: Keep Clam: The Seattle Mariners

Twins take 2 of 3 from the expansion Mariners.

More than 23K Minnesotans brave 35 degree weather, to watch the Twins rap out 11 singles as Geoff Zahn holds the Mariners to 2 runs.

Re: Keep Clam: The Seattle Mariners

Before today's game, Dave Pagan was placed on the 60-day DL, with elbow tendonitis. It is unclear if Pagan will return this season. Pagan had pitched 14 innings over 5 games, for a 1.29 ERA. Tom Brown, a 27 year old right hander, was called up from AAA.

The Royals take an early lead, and manage to hold on.

Re: Keep Clam: The Seattle Mariners

    Now The Mariners...

9-15 6th in the AL West is about as good as I expected. I am as disappointed by the 2-10 home record, as I am pleased by the 7-5 road record. The 2-5 mark in 1-run games is also worrisome. We won our only extra-inning game so far.

The team is hitting just above the league average, but we're not hitting for much power (11 HR, 13th in AL, 23rd MLB). As a team, the Mariners score 4.0 RPG (.78 below AL average) & allow 4.79 RPG (.01 above AL average). On a side note RPG in the NL is 3.82.
