Why RBI is a pointless stat

I am saying something that fili said in another sports talk thread....because I want to be able to reference this in the future.

in 1986 McGee drove in 16% of the runners on base when he batted
in 1988 McGee drove in 14% of the runners on base when he batted
in 1987 McGee drove in 17% of the runners on base when he batted

So, a slight improvement in the percent of runners he was able to drive in.

    BUT

in 1986 McGee had 291 runners on base. If he had driven in 17% (instead of 16%) he would have increased his RBI by about 3 RBI giving him 51 RBI
in 1988 McGee had 369 runners on base. If he had driven in 17% (instead of 14%) he would have increased his RBI by about 11 RBI giving him 61 RBI
in 1987 McGee had 544 runners on base.

That's why he had 100 RBI in 1987
    thanks fili, great example

No, he got so good that runners before him got on base more in '87. RBI is king!

No really, this is excellent work

I don't have to like someone to respect when they say something factual and obviously correct.

I have always respected my few enemies....although, that would be a huge stretch to call fili an enemy....we just desperately disagree on all things non baseball related.

I do have one enemy I have zero respect for, but I don't have many enemies to begin with...and this enemy doesn't even know I don't like him.

obviously, never knew where you pulled it from, just saw your post about working at Quizno's and fries, and everyone wondering when Quizno's served fries.

and yes, I posted it on another forum.

The MLBTR forum is full of people who think stats are the devil.

Their facebook commentors are very different however. It's weird.

    ?

I just know that there are very few intelligent posters on that lil forum...but there are a few good one's. I like the Cardinals section though, and like to visit it.

The people who comment on their facebook usually have a decent understanding that RBI's are worthless. I established myself on there after I owned a kid hating on J.D. Drew and everyone is pretty kewl.

That EvanLongoriaMVP kid is a disgrace to Evan Longoria.

As a side note, McGee hit #2 in '85 and '86, #5 in '87. And in '87, Jack Clark and his .459 OBP hit in front of him. That is why he had more chances.
