haha
Which is unfortunate, since players should ideally be judged based on their overall contribution, and Edmonds boasts a career that places him in the top 10 all-time among center fielders.
If he had his exact same career but as a left or right fielder, I wouldn't say he's a Hall of Famer because the offensive standards are higher in the corners, but as a center fielder, a 132 OPS+ with above average defense is just too special to ignore imo (though I know he will probably be ignored when his time comes on the ballot).
centerfield is what, the third toughest defensive position on the diamond? (correct me if that is wrong)
I would think a league great for a decade, and a guy that outplayed guys like Puckett deserve to get in. Even if he never lead the league in an offensive category, I think that is a very weak reason to not vote him into the hall. I believe I could find plenty of guys that have been voted in that never lead the league in any offensive categories that would be further down the defensive spectrum line.
I am still not seeing a sound argument that says he shouldn't get in.
the Cub fan I was debating says he doesn't 'feel' like a hall of famer.
what the ****? so because his national popularity wasn't high enough means he can't get into the hall.
I actually think that's a requirement to get into the Hall of Fame.
Dear BBWA,
Please note a change to the rules when voting for a member of the Hall of Fame. Normally, we would ask you to simply judge on the players value throughout his career. Statistically, that is. But we've added a couple rules as listed below:
The player(s) must hereby be judged on his popularity within the game.
The player(s) must be named Derek Jeter or Nick Punto.
All the best,
Bud Selig, Commissioner of Baseball
lmao
I just have a hard time not seeing Edmonds as a hall of famer, sure he doesn't have the career counting stats, but he was absolutely elite when he played.
I am hoping that he can reach number 400 in Milwaukee to boost his hall chances, as well 2000 hits, but I am doubting he gets voted in, even though he easily deserves it. especially when looking at career WAR.
Sometimes, I look at Andres Gallaraga's 399 and sigh woefully.
I hope Jim doesn't have the same thing happen to him.
Andres is better than Todd Helton.
agreed. He isn't the worst atrocity, but he is at least a career 10 WAR short of being borderline IMO, at least 5.
But he was a high batting average hitter, who played a lot of games....and acquired a ton of base hits, and played a long time.
If only batting average mattered
he also played during a hitter's era.
