Re: Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On

    TEAM PREVIEW
    1919

    Lineup Preview:
    #1 C Wally Schang (86), 29 years old
#2 SS Dave Bancroft (84), 28 years old
    #3 1B Stuffy McInnis (77), 28 years old
#4 LF Babe Ruth (98), 24 years old
    #5 3B Ray Grimes (73/86), 25 years old
#6 CF Amos Strunk (79), 30 years old
    #7 2B Everett Scott (74/79), 26 years old
#8 RF Nemo Leibold (74), 27 years old
    ~~Pitchers Slot~~

Lineup Thoughts: Any line-up with Babe Ruth in it is good, but even aside from him we're solid. Cy Williams is starting the year on the DL for about a week, which is why Leibold is in there, and after he gets back we look even better.

    Bench Preview:
    BN #1 C Wally Mayer (69), 28 years old
    BN #2 2B Jack Barry (67), 31 years old
BN #3 OF Ben Paschal (71), 23 years old
BN #4 IF Mike McNally (63/67), 25 years old
    BN #5 1B Del Gainer (67), 32 years old
    BN #6 C Norm McNeil (68/70), 26 years old

Bench Thoughts: Basically we lack depth in the worst way possible. The Rule V hit us a little hard in that regard. It'll look a little better once Williams comes back and Leibold is allowed to move back to the bench. But if anyone gets hurt for an extended period of time, we're essentially screwed.

    Starting Rotation Preview:
SP #1 RHP Joe Bush (93/96), 26 years old
SP #2 RHP Carl Mays (93), 27 years old
SP #3 LHP Herb Pennock (92), 25 years old
SP #4 RHP Syl Johnson (78/95), 18 years old
SP #5 RHP Jean Dubuc (82), 30 years old

Starting Rotation Thoughts: Very strong starting rotation, even after losing Leonard to Free Agency. We know what we'll get from Bush, Mays, and Pennock, and Dubuc probably won't make many starts. That means Syl Johnson is the real wild card here. Obviously he has a ton of potential, and if he can harness that we're in for a real good season. If not, well, who knows.

    Bullpen Preview:
SR RHP John Woods (74/82), 21 years old
SR RHP Dick McCabe (75/77), 23 years old
SR RHP Vince Molyneaux (71), 30 years old
SR LHP Bill Clowers (72/82), 20 years old
MR LHP Walt Kinney (80/82), 25 years old
LR RHP Dave Black (78), 26 years old

Bullpen Thoughts: Pretty solid bullpen. No one is a real stand-out, but I can't look at anyone and groan either. We should get some solid innings from this group in 1919.

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On

    RED SOX RECAP
    APRIL 1919

    Games of Note:

April 1; Red Sox win on Opening Day - We won on Opening Day, due almost entirely to the efforts of Joe Bush. Bush pitched the complete game and allowed only two runs while striking out six, as well as going 2-3 and driving in two runs in support of himself!

April 11; Tigers slammed by Red Sox - We beat up on the Tigers 18-2 in the game. Babe Ruth homered and drove in five runs, and Carl Mays pitched all nine innings and allowed only two runs, while going 4-6 with two runs and three RBI's at the plate.

April 24; Red Sox lose 1-0 squeaker against White Sox - Neither team managed more than four hits, but unfortunately for us the White Sox managed to eke a run out of those four hits. White Sox starter Chief Bender pitched the complete game shutout with 5 K's, and Carl Mays pitched the complete game for us, and allowed just one run while striking out three.

    Thoughts:

Needless to say, not the best month. We started out at 7-1, but then finished the month 3-11. We also have Wally Schang going down for 21 days with a spiked achilles, and Ruth down for eight with an unspecified injury which doesn't help matters. What did go well, however, is that Babe still managed four homers, 15 RBI's, and an OPS higher than 1.000. Additionally, rookie third baseman Ray Grimes managed a .337 batting average.

    Month MVP + Cy Young
    SP CARL MAYS

As good as Babe was with the bat, Mays was an absolute BEAST on the hill. He pitched a complete game in every start he made in the month, and didn't allow more than two earned runs in any of those starts. If not for absence of offense at the end of the month he'd be 6-0 instead of just 4-2. Not only that but he's hitting .556/.619/.667/1.286 with four RBI's.

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On

    RED SOX RECAP
    MAY 1919

    Games of Note:

May 10; Ruth homers in second game Back - Babe Ruth homered in his second game back from injury and drove in 3 runs in our 13-8 win over the Senators. This game saw 11 different pitchers combine to throw over 300 pitches.

May 18; Joe Bush hurls complete game Shutout - Bush went all nine innings without allowing a run and striking out five on four hits and four walks. Additionally, he helped out his own cause be going 2-4 with a triple and a run scored.

May 20; Red Sox issued whooping at hands of Senators - The Senators gave us a beating in this game, beating us 17-7, and out hitting us 24-8. We were forced to use six pitchers, only one of which, Walt Kinney, did not give up at least one run. The Senators went on to sweep the four game series from us.

May 28; Red Sox shutout 3-0 - Carl Mays and Cheif Bender squared off in another pitching duel, and Bender again got the better of Mays. Bender threw a shutout again, while Mays also completed the game but allowed three runs.

    Thoughts:

It goes without saying that this is NOT how I envisioned this season starting. 21-29 and ten games back for the Pennant at the beginning of June. That's a steep hill to climb, but I think we can do it. We still have one of the most talented teams in the American League, they just aren't playing the way they should be. Even if not, I can still salivate at the thought of having a high pick in next year's draft.

    May MVP
    LF BABE RUTH

I have a hard time seeing anyone but Ruth winning this for us for a while. Maybe a pitcher with a great month here and there, but Ruth's pretty much got this one by the balls for the foreseeable future. This month he hit .452 in 21 games, with three homers and 18 RBI's.

    May Cy Young
    SP JOE BUSH

This was a really bad month for the pitching. Like really, really bad. Bush wins this almost by default simply because no one else really deserved it. He went 4-2 in the month with an ERA of 3.55.

    THE DRAFT
FITZSIMMONS GOES FIRST, SOX SELECT SHORTSTOP IN FIRST ROUND

    --June 3, 1919

Another year, and another Philly team with the first overall pick. Last year it was the A's selecting Lefty Grove with the #1 overall pick, and this year it was the Phillies selecting starting pitcher Freddie Fitzsimmons (80/94) out of Mishiwaka, Indiana. Fitzsimmons has good control and movement, but lacks in the power department, which is prototypical of the pitchers in this era. As for pitches he sports a fastball, a knuckleball, and a curveball.

With our pick we selected one of the top position players in the draft, shortstop Glenn Wright (54/88). Wright appears as if he'll be an excellent hitter at the major league level, and quite fast. He also stands to have a solid glove and a strong arm. The problem he's most likely to face is staying on the field long enough to reach his impressive potential.

In subsequent rounds we selected CF George Loepp (55/84), RF Ed Coleman (56/83), 2B Jimmie Reese (54/77), LF Tige Stone (55/71), and CF John Jones (55/68).

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On

    RED SOX RECAP
    JUNE 1919

    Games of Note:

June 4; Red Sox win on walk-off shot by unlikely Hero - We won this game with a four-run ninth inning in which the hero came in the unlikely personage of Walt Kinney. Kinney earned the win by going two innings and allowing a run, as well as hitting the walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning.

June 13; Sox win 7-4 on strong performance by Bush - We beat the Philly A's 7-4 on a strong game by Joe Bush. Not only did Bush go nine innings and allow four runs with five K's, he also went 2-4 and drove in a run himself. Ruth and Barry also doubled and drove in runs.

June 18; Sox beat Sen's 10-8 - We managed to win the game in spite of giving up eight earned runs. Stuffy McInnis fell just a home run short of hitting for the cycle, and Evertt Scott drove in three runs.

June 30; Red Sox finish month above .500 - We won the last game of the month to have our first .500+ month of the season. Syl Johnson went nine innings and allowed only one run on eight hits, and also doubled and drove in a run of his own, to help us out in the winning effort.

    Thoughts:

Our first month of the season above .500. Barely. We're still terribly inconsistent. Ruth isn't hitting as well as he did last year (though he is still hitting very well), and our pitching isn't nearly as good as it could/should be. We're not totally out of it yet, but we're damn close. We're gonna need a massive July to get back into the thick of things, and if that doesn't happen I might as well just tank and see whose in the draft next year.

    June MVP
    1B STUFFY MCINNIS

McInnis was very, very good this month. He nearly hit for the cycle on the 18th, he was second in hits for the month, first in RBI's, and had a .304/.333/.384 line. He was a big part of the reason we actually managed to finish the month above .500.

    June Cy Young
    SP SYL JOHNSON

A most excellent month for Syl. Syl went 3-0 in five starts, had an ERA of 3.31 in 32 2/3 innings, and had 10 strikeouts.

Re: Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On

    RED SOX RECAP
    JULY 1919

    Games of Note:

July 4; Syl Johnson improves to 6-2 - We split a series with the Indians with the help of a strong start by Syl Johnson. Johnson went all nine innings, and allowed just two runs (only one earned), and struck out four batters, on six hits.

July 13; Red Sox beat Yankees with eight run third Inning - With the help of an eight run third inning, that saw Ruth hit home run #12 of the season, we beat the Yankees 14-9. Syl Johnson allowed eight runs, though only three were earned, over five innings and 78 pitches. McInnis and Leibold also drove in three runs a piece.

July 19; Red Sox fall to 12 games Back - Following a 6-3 loss at the hands of the Indians our record falls to 44-50 for the season and 9-8 for the month, and puts us 12 games back for the Pennant. Erksine Mayer shut us down for nine innings, allowing us only four hits and three runs.

July 24; Mays shuts down St. Louis Browns for tenth win of the Season - Carl Mays put the clamps on the St. Louis Browns offense to get his tenth win of the season. He went all nine innings and allowed just one earned run on seven hits. Ben Paschal helped him out on offense by going 1-3 with runs batted in.

July 27; Syl Johnson hurls Shutout - Syl Johnson threw the best game of his young career. Johnson went all nine innings without allowing a run on five hits, and striking out four. Stuffy McInnis and Everett Scott helped out at the dish, combining to go 5-7 with three runs and three RBI's.

    Thoughts:

We actually played pretty well in July, finishing the month at 16-12. But we still lost ground in the Pennant race in spite of that. I hate to say it so early, but don't think the Pennant is in the cards for us this season. Hopefully our younger players like Syl Johnson and Everett Scott continue to play well down the stretch just for the sake of experience, but at this point we're pretty much playing for the draft.

    July MVP
    CF CY WILLIAMS

What!? Two months in a row without Ruth!?! Yep, it's true. Cy Williams played very, very well this month. He hit at a team best .338/.424/.550 clip with four homers and 20 RBI's, as well as 15 runs. All that in 20 games. Pretty impressive.

    July Cy Young
    SP JOE BUSH
