Red Sox Memoirs - 1918 Red Sox and On

[YEAH DAAAAWG]

Due to the unfortunate death of Red Sox Memoirs due to my own stupid-ass mistake , I'm starting a new dynasty. This is going to start with the 1918 Red Sox. Although I chose 1918 because I wanted to have Babe Ruth on my team, this dynasty will not be like Red Sox Memoirs where I will be cataloging a players career. A good comparison for what I'm shooting for would probably be more along the lines of McPhale's Braving the 80's. Month-by-month updates and quickly moving through the seasons. Not a whole lot of detail, but still enough to make it fun for me to write and hopefully for you to read. My desire is to get this up to present day MLB and beyond. Throughout the course of it I'll be keeping an eye on competitive balance, and also messing with the league and bending it to my will. For example, relocating teams, putting expansions teams in different cities than where they actually came about, messing with league structure, and so on and so forth.

So I guess it's time to start things! Wish me luck!

Lineup Thoughts: Pretty solid. 1-5 is very good, and you can never complain when you've got the Bambino in the clean-up spot, but it does tail off a little after that. Very, very patient line-up for the most part, and it should be capable of putting up a good number of runs. Expect MVP numbers from the Babe.

Starting Rotation Thoughts: We have a very, very good and very, very young starting rotation. Not a whole lot of guys that are gonna post big strikeout numbers, but they'll all throw a lot of innings and most likely have very, very low ERA and walk numbers.

RED SOX RECAP
APRIL 1918

Games of Note:

April 5th; Opening Day - Joe Bush makes the opening day start and gets roughed up, as does the rest of the pitching staff, as we fall 13-4 on opening day. Harry Hooper goes 3-5 with an RBI in the loss. Wally Schang also suffers an injury in the game and goes down for 14 days, with Sam Agnew filling in for him.

April 9th; First win of the Season - Our first win of the season comes against the Yankees in a 4-2 squeaker. Herb Pennock throws a complete game and gives up only two runs to help us to the 'W'.

April 15th; Slugfest in Boston - We win our third game of the season in a massive slugfest with the Senators. The final score ended up at 17-16. Ruth hit his fourth homer of the season, and Harry Hooper went 5-7 to raise his batting average to above .440.

April 20th; Wyckoff hurls Shutout - We win the game 1-0 as Weldon Wyckoff pitches an excellent game. Wyckoff went all nine innings without allowing a run on four hits and struck out three. Our one run came in the bottom of the third on an error by third baseman Jimmy Austin to plate Heinie Wagner.

April 30th; Win pulls us to within two games of first place Cleveland Indians - A 4-3 win over the Tigers, in which Ruth hit his 8th home run of the season and Wyckoff threw another complete game, pulls us to within two games of the first place Indians.

Thoughts:

Month started off kinda crappy, as we started 4-7, but it evened off and we finish the month pretty strong and we're only two games outta first place. The pitching has been hit or miss, but fortunately Wycoff has provided us with some great spot starts here and there. Aside from Ruth and Hooper the offense has been mediocre, but the results are there in terms of wins so I won't complain.....yet.

April MVP
LF BABE RUTH

Surprising, right? He accounted for eight of the team's nine home runs and leads the team in RBI's and batting average by a longshot. He ranks first in the league in homers (by twice what the guy in second has), second in batting average, first in RBI's, and first in OPS.

April Cy Young
SP JOE BUSH

Bush bounced back from his ugly opening day start nicely. He went 3-3 in six starts and 46 1/3 innings, and had a very pretty ERA of 2.91. Wyckoff comes in a close second with his three wins and ERA of 1.26, but I gave it to Bullet Joe because he pitched about 20 more innings than Wyckoff.

BAKER TO BEANTOWN
FRANK BAKER TRADED TO RED SOX

--May 11, 1918

Today the Philadelphia A's approached us with an offer we simply could not refuse. They offered us third baseman Frank Baker (80), for pitching prospect Buzz Wetzel (71/81). Since we are in the thick of the AL Pennant race, and our previous third baseman was hitting with the skill and ferocity of a feather, this was a no-brainer for us. Baker gives us another good contact and eye bat, while also providing respectable defense at the hot corner, neither of which Barbare did. Buzz wasn't too special as a prospect, so I had no qualms with letting him go in exchange for an immediate offensive and defensive upgrade.

RED SOX RECAP
MAY 1918

Games of Note:

May 4; Start of three game losing Streak - Despite another excellent outing by Wyckoff, this game was the start of what proved to be a three game losing streak that saw us go from a half game back of the Indians to 3 1/2 or 4 games back from the Indians. Wyckoff allowed only one earned run over nine innings, but an error in the third inning led to the two difference-making runs.

May 19; Joe Wood shutout pulls Red Sox to within two games of First - A masterfully pitched game by Bullet Joe pulls us to within two games of first place. Joe pitched the complete game shutout, allowing only five hits and three walks, striking out two. The offense also helped out, with Wally Schang going 3-5 with a homer and two RBI's from the leadoff slot.

May 26; 20-6 beatdown by Red Sox - We issued a 20-6 beatdown to the Tigers in order to stay two games back of the Indians. The clear star of the game was Babe Ruth, as he went 3-5 with two walks, four runs, two homers, and 7 RBI's.

May 30; Red Sox take two of three from Indians - We managed to win the rubber game in the three game set against the Indians in order to pull within a game of first place. We collected 13 hits in the win, with Barry, Hooper, and Baker all driving in multiple runs.

Thoughts:

We went 19-10 for the month, which is certainly nothing to be unhappy with, but we had some missed opportunities. The two three-game losing streaks at the beginning and the middle of the month came with horrible timing, as the first time around the Indians managed to put some space between us, and the second time we missed an opportunity to take the lead for the AL Pennant. Hooper cooled off A LOT, as his batting average dropped from well over .400 to .323. Baker had a good start with us, hitting at a .276/.315/.483 clip with 3 homers and 15 RBI's.

LF BABE RUTH

The man is a beast. He's probably the league MVP right now, let alone team MVP. He leads the team by a wide margin in all the triple crown categories, as well as just about every other offensive statistic you can think of, minus stolen bases. He's still first in homers in baseball by a wide margin, still first in RBI's (though the gap has closed a little bit), and first in OPS.

Bush continues to support the ace moniker. First on the team in innings pitched and strikeouts, and second in ERA and wins. He has six complete games and three shutouts thus far on the season, and has put forth a quality start in eight of his 13 starts.

RED SOX RECAP
JUNE 1918

Games of Note:

June 2; 6-1 wins gives Red Sox possession of First Place - A 6-1 win over the Philadelphia A's gives us a half game lead for the AL Pennant lead. Carl Mays pitches a complete game and allows just the one run, while Stuffy McInnis and Ruth drive in a pair of runs each.

June 9; Four game winning streak comes to an end - Our four game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Tigers. Pennock allowed six runs in just six innings and Ruth drove in two of our three runs. Despite the loss we're still 2 games up for the Pennant.

June 14; Red Sox lose opening game of three game set with Indians in Extras - We lost the opening game of our three game series against the Indians in ten innings. We mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth to tie it, and then left the tying run on third in the tenth. The loss still puts us 1 game up on them.

June 16; Red Sox take one of three, maintain AL Pennant Lead - The series didn't go well at all. But we did manage to take game #3 in order to avoid being swept and to reclaim the AL lead after the Indians tied it with wins in the first two games of the series.

June 22; Five game losing streak Snapped - With an 8-7 win over the Athletics we snapped our five game losing streak. The streak saw us go from one up for the pennant to two back. We were helped out by Ruth and Baker homers, as well as brilliant work out of the pen by Bill Clowers and Dick McCabe.

June 30; Red Sox continue winning Streak - So just a week after losing five in a row, we win six in a row and reclaim the Pennant lead. Baker was the star, going 2-6 with a home run and four RBI's.

Thoughts:

Well we went 14-13 which wasn't as good as previous months in terms of winning percentage, but we did manage to take the Pennant lead near the beginning of the month and reclaim it by the end of the month, in spite of relinquishing it for a short while. Frank Baker has proven to be a very valuable pick-up for us. In 46 games he's hitting .321/.368/.485/.853 (only one on the team besides Babe Ruth with an OPS higher than .800) with five homers and 31 RBI's. The offense in general has been picking it up very nicely lately. We don't get a lot of XBH (besides Ruth and Baker), but most of the lineup is hitting for a solid average and drawing a good share of walks.

June MVP
LF BABE RUTH

Yeah, surprising, I know. He's got 19 homers, which is 12 more than anyone in the American League and 10 more than anyone in both leagues. His 78 RBI's are 11 more than anyone in the AL, and he's third in batting average to George Sisler by 21 points. The only way he doesn't win the League MVP at this point is if he gets hurt and misses a considerable amount of time.

June Cy Young
RP BILL CLOWERS

The starting rotation was pretty pathetic in June, and Joe Bush missed a few starts with an injury, but Clowers was dominant out of the 'pen this month. In 17 innings pitched in June he allowed only one run, to give him an ERA of 0.52 for the month. Additionally, he posted a 3-1 record with a save for the month.

THE DRAFT
GABBY GOES FIRST, GROVE SECOND

--June 3, 1918

On June 3rd the draft took place with some of baseballs future starts going in the first few picks. The number one pick this year belonged to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and with it they selected 17 year old catcher Gabby Hartnett (72/96). Gabby looks as if he'll be a very complete and well-rounded player. His contact and power both project at an All-Star level, as does his defense.

With the second pick the Philadelphia A's 18 year old Lefty Grove (88/97). Why the Pirates passed on Grove for Hartnett is anyone's guess, but I'm sure the A's don't mind. Grove already has a solid fastball and curveball, as well as average control and movement of his pitches. With a few years he may even become a good strikeout pitcher.

Other notable first round picks include CF Hack Wilson (69/83) going 18th overall to the Phillies, SP George Earnshaw (83/93) at #9 overall to the Reds, and SP Pete Donohue (80/94) at #8 overall to the Senators.

As for the Red Sox portion of the draft, with the first pick we got reliever-turned-starter Syl Johnson (75/92). We were looking for position players because we have no good position player prospects, but all the first-round quality ones were gone at our pick. Syl sports a very good curve and sidearm curve, as well as good movement and control on his pitches. He does suffer from some health concerns, but hopefully they won't manifest themselves.

We did address the lack of position prospects throughout the remainder of the draft by taking 16 year old LF Lucas Stevens (55/81) in the second round, C Merv Shea (58/76) in the third, 2B Billy Rhiel (55/76) in the fourth, and SS Bill Narleski (52/71) in the final round of the draft.
