Then, when that player is an impact, you can trade him for another impact player midway through your playoff run because the Yankees will still have the highest payroll and best players in the game in 5 years!
or maybe its not quite as simple stupid as you wish to make it.

Sorry, you are stupid and your 'logic' is 'illogical'.

    You're right.... he'd be a top 5/10 player rather than a top 2.

Oh, and by the way. A .330/.400/.500 player is an impact bat regardless of position. It doesn't matter if he's a catcher or not, although that obviously helps.

I just wouldn't want to pay all that coin long term for a catcher without alot of power (this 09 year was likely more of an aberration than the norm) who i may have to move because of knee or back lingering injuries. Who knows the toll taken on his body during catcher 3,4,5 more seasons? Would he be effective moved to 1st or DH? Again...I love Mauer, I just wouldn't want to pay that coin, as the twins, for at least 7 years maybe longer. Some teams can afford that risk IMO, the twins shouldn't.
The Twins aren't small market. They can afford risks on possibly the best player they will have for 10 plus years. I personally see it as "we have a shot this year, let's go for it". They get two draft picks at the end if he walks, and there is still no indication he WON'T sign. It's not Matt Holliday in Colorado, he's from Minnesota, he's not a "I wanna play in a large market" guy. I can see the team and Mauer coming to an agreement.

And all indications are that they're close.

If only they had listened to all the "experts" back in 2001. They could have avoided this whole mess altogether.

If you weren't a contending team (Padres), it makes sense. In this case, though, it would be idiotic especially because they're close to an agreement and he's FROM the area.

Because your GM is Dayton Moore/Omar Minaya/Brian Sabean.

You're a Yankee fan right? You've never had to deal with this situation before, so your opinion holds less water in this discussion and your black and white stance makes me lean towards your opinion holding no water. It's not a "stupid idea". It's just a "stupid idea" in this context. In rebuilding mode it might make sense, although there are other players that would make more sense if one had to slash the payroll. I don't think the Twins are going to have to slash payroll. I think they can keep Mauer, Morneau, Nathan etc. I also know it's not a stupid idea because my team has just traded its best player ever in a deal that helped all four teams. It's the kind of deal teams make in a rebuilding phase, but for you that might as well be some as yet unnamed disease because you will never have to experience it.

Pretty sure Texas was in dire straits financially when they traded him.

Pretty sure Josh jut brought up an example that refuted his own previous post.
