You could even say that the Marlins GM is also very good. He has done a lot of great work with little payroll...but he does have the former scouting director of the Mariners who drafted Tino Martinez, Ken Griffey jr, was instrumental in bringing in Jay Buhner and giving Edgar a shot...remember Edgar was a good glove no bat player when he was young ,

Humber was supposed to be a #decent #2 or a very good #3, Gomez was supposed to be an ok player, not a star but an ok player, the other's I didnt know.
Dickay I think the reason they dont give Dombrowski that much credit is because they signed guys to big contracts that didnt always pan out... where guys like Epstein had flopps, like Penny, Smoltz, Corra, (was he there for Edgar Rentaria) most were relativly low inpact. Smoltz cost little, Penny cost little, Cora was a BIG hit and Edgar was a hit but brought them Riske in the end.
He has done MORE then he has hurt. He goit Arroyo of the waiver wire, signed to a cheap deal and foolishly traded away for willy mo
Dombrowski seamed to have bigger mistakes... Dontrel Willis, Edgar Rentaria, Kyle Farnsworth, etc. The other 2 GM's I mentioned had oops's but not as big
Here's my issue. Just comparing Dombrowksi and Friedman...to me there is no comparison.

    - Regarding drafting and developing. Friedman has done great but Dombrowski was with Montreal when they were seen as a drafting & developing of young talent machine. Financially they could never keep them..but regardless. He then went to FLA, built a nice farm that he traded so they could get MLB stars to go along with FA signings and bought a WS Championship. That really had never been done in before in such short quick manner, and he nearly eliminated the theory of chemistry being vitally important. He then traded those stars for young talent, drafted more young talent and again won a WS with a young Marlin team, with a very small payroll. Following that he took on one of the worst teams in the league in DET, and drafted/developed more quality young talent and went to a third WS. He today has a bunch of up and coming young talents.

    - Regarding trades....Dombrowski is clearly the winner just for what he did in Miami. Friedmans, if he has a fault it has been reluctance to trade and bring in proven talent to take the next step. They desperately need a new stadium deal there, and finishing 3rd isn't going to get the public gitty to pony up the 70 to 80% financing they are looking for. He also dealt away Edwin Jackson which doesn't look great.

    - Regarding FA signings.....Dombrowski again. Largely for what he did to buy the WS Championship in Miami. He brought Cabrera, K. Rogers, and many others to DET.

Sure he's made a few mistakes. He's also had a much longer tenure to guage against than Friedman, and has taken more gambles. I dont see how Mags Ordonez can be held against him in high order. 15 mil for 4 years with a couple 18mil years on the tail end that were vested. I dont see it as too outrageous considering he was very good in 06, rediculously good in 07, very good in 08 and last year the wheels fell off. I don't see the other mistakes you listed as all that significant in the grand scheme. Pat Burrell wasn't great for Fried.

Both GM's are good...but Dombrowski's history, record, success and current roster IMO puts him well ahead. Friedman just doesn't have the accomplishments.

I don't believe you need major accomplishments to be a good GM. The Rays haven't won the division or WS but it's hard to argue he's one of the best GMs in the game. However, when you look at Jack Z and what he's done it's hard to find a trade or signing that you think is really risk and a bad move. There's a reason he's getting so much national attention.

If anything, this off-season showed why he's a good GM.

He turned a 19 year old SP with potential, a middle reliever and an average corner outfielder in to Javier Vazquez.

He signed Nick Johnson to be the DH at a below average rate.

He signed Chan Ho Park for $1M.

He traded a not amazing CF prospect, a middle reliever and a once hyped up prospect for Curtis Granderson.

    Pretty damn good.
