call me a homer, or whatever but as far as GM's go, Rizzo is top notch. Thomas Boswell (who may be a homer also) said it best...
    TB's Washington Post article
I know he has an extremely small sample size to look at but,
In less than 365 days, he's signed or traded for Jason Marquis, Stephen Strasburg, Iván Rodríguez, Nyjer Morgan, Adam Kennedy, Chien-Ming Wang and an entirely new bullpen of Matt Capps, Sean Burnett, Brian Bruney, Miguel Bautista, Eddie Guardado, Tyler Walker and Drew Storen. And, as rotation insurance, he just signed Liván Hernández to a minor league deal.

In getting them all, including Wang, Kennedy and Hernández this month, Rizzo traded only three players: Lastings Milledge, Joel Hanrahan and Rule 5 player Jamie Hoffmann.
And that, my friends, is an example of how to do business. IMO

Correct. I should've clarified it a bit more. My point was that most guys who know what they're doing can put together a contender on a budget north of $100M. It takes real talent to put together a contender on a shoestring budget like Friedman has in Tampa. That to me is more impressive.

I am going to have to put Rizzo in the bottom half of my top GM list personally.

Like I said, its a small sample size, but hopefully at the end of this season, Rizzo will move up in that list for you.

I think he is starting to do things right, and I agree, very small sample size.

He did well this off-season, even though at first I thought it was disastrous, in the end, I think he did a good job...still don't know why Pudge had to get two years though.

If he keeps stocking up that farm team while trying to have a respectable team on the field, he could be turning that team around.

I should have said, you have to vote for someone other than the GM of your fav team

From my experience, people either love, or hate their GM's

Not me... I dont think Wren is terrible but I dont think he is the greatest either.
If we already had a good team and he was taking risks like G-Anderson and another year of Tommy Glavine... that would be fine but when you are a "decent" team you need to spend it wisely on a guy like Abreu, who yuo pretty much KNOW will make a contribution. Glaus was a not terrible, because with chippers history now if injuries it lets us keep Prado at 2B and have an alternative for 3B. Melky for Vazquez tho... that instant bumped him down a LOT in my book

I think its easier to identify the Worst GM's than the best ones. For all we know, there could be some great GM's that hasn't had enough time rebuilding to really show their true ability to be a GM.

Im thinking Toronto and Pittsburgh respectively on this. They seem to be doing the right things so far in turning the ship.

True... Toronto seams to be trying to amass tallent in their farm along with Pitt. John Shurholtz did that with te braves whe Bobby Cox apointed him the GM. They went pitching... get as many arms as possible, every arm he could grab. Then build around them... it u have 15 pitchers and 2/3 dont pan out.... u still ahve an entire rotation. Thats the sign of a good GM in my opinion... one that sees you cant put all your egs in 2 basket... all those years the Braves kept winning 90+ games a year its because of depth...

    Re: Top GM In baseball

Sorry...I thought this was the best GM of all-time thread.

I voted for Andrew Friedman, but I think Jon Daniels is hot on his heels. I'm hoping AA can emulate these two young GMs. The AL East and the AL West are the two best divisions in baseball for GMs. Billy Beane needs to restore his magic touch though because it's been a while. Daniels and Jack Zduriencik are two of the best new GMs and I haven't seen enough of Tony Reagins to form an opinion. Alex Anthopoulos is going to have a tough time in the East for a while. The Yankees and Red Sox and their huge payrolls plus the proven Andy MacPhail and Friedman are going to make it real tough, but he's off to a very good start. Epstein is a fantastic GM and I don't think Cashman gets enough credit either - he did manage to get Steinbrenner (George or his two sons - whoever's in charge) to allow him to run the baseball department, by all appearances without interference. That is a monumental achievement. If you want to understand why the NL is so far behind the AL look no further than this poll so far. Two fan boy votes for Amaro Jr. and Rizzo and the rest of the votes have gone to the AL GMs as they should. There's a ton of GM talent in the AL and nowhere near as much depth in the NL.

CCamels: Rizzo? Seriously? I like Strasburg, Storen and Morgan. Ethothep's monkey could've filled out a bullpen with MLB flotsam, while taking notes for him in class. Ivan Rodriguez' last good season was 2006, Adam Kennedy's was 2005, Hernandez' was 2005, Marquis is a league average pitcher and Wang must stay healthy to be of any use, although I like him as a low risk signing that could payoff. If these signings are used to allow youngsters time to develop in what is currently a middle of the pack farm system and if they continue to draft and develop well, then Rizzo will deserve more recognition. I hope he proves to be an excellent GM, so that buffoons like Ricciardi and Bowden will never again be allowed to hold important positions like this in MLB, but for now the best you can say about him (like Anthopoulos) is that we need more data.

Agreed, everyone needs at least 8 baskets for their egs. If all else fails, dump your eggs out of your egg baskets & use them to hold your egs
