I probably still won't. I need to find a place for Wil Cordero to play on a semi-permanent basis, and 1B may be the best option for that once Vaughn leaves.
This is the trouble I'm having with letting him go. He's having a monster season and I really don't want to get NOTHING if I let him go. I might see if I can resign him just so I can trade him before the start of the season and get something out of it, lol.
Thanks!![]()

Quite a game offensively. Nomar got two hits in six at bats and drove in a run, Bret Boone had four RBI's, and Mike Stanley was 2-3 with two doubles, two walks, and two runs. The most damage, however, came from Rondell White and Barry Larkin. White went 4-5 with a homer, two runs, two RBI's, and a steal, while Larkin went 3-5 with a walk, two runs, a triple, an RBI, and a steal. Henry had another solid start, going seven innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits, one walk, and striking out seven batters.

This game was quite frustrating. Clemens started the game out by shutting them out for the first six innings, but then allowed four runs to them in the seventh, before Mike Maddux came in and allowed a fifth. Slocumb allowed what proved to be the game-winning run an inning later. On the plus side Nomar got his second consecutive multi-hit game, which hopefully means he's breaking out of his slump.

Arguably the best game of the young Jeff Suppan's career. He went seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out what is easily a career high eight batters. Thoughts: Nomar seems to be busting out of his mini-slump. He was 7-15 in the seriest against the Brewers with five runs, a homer and five RBI's, which is great news for us especially because we're playing the Yankees at the end of the week and we need his bat to be going if we're gonna pick up some ground on them. This series against the Tigers is Nixon's last chance to convince me that he belongs on the major league roster, too, and if not we're turning right field over to Wil Cordero.

SMOOOOOOKESHOW! A whole lotta offense from our line-up in this win over the Tigers. Trot Nixon must know I'm planning on pulling him out of the lineup if he keeps sucking because he went 2-4 with a home run and a double in this game to raise his average to .228. Thoughts: We're gonna go into the Yankees series coming off a sweep, which I personally think is a huge boost to us. We're also gonna have our top three of Clemens, Suppan, and Moyer going against them, and all have pitched well as of late, so I'm confident we'll be able to pick up a game or two on them in this series. We're currently sitting five back of them for the division, and only one back of the ChiSox for the Wild Card. Trot Nixon will also be staying in the line-up for the time being, as he's hitting very well of late with a line of .333/.415/.500 in his last ten games. I am going to insert Wil Cordero in his place against lefties, however. Wish me luck against the Yankees!

This game was absolutely infuriating. We are one spotty Heathcliff Slocumb appearance from winning this game. It didn't help that we really got shut down by Kamieniecki again, and I don't get how a guy with an ERA near 5.00 keeps killing us this season! This time he went eight innings and allowed only three runs on six hits and three walks. Nixon helped out the offense by going 2-4 with two RBI's, but it didn't matter. Thoughts: That series against the Yankees did not go nearly as well as I was hoping it would. I figured with Clemens, Suppan, and Moyer going we'd have been able to win at least one of the three games, but we didn't even manage that. The sweep leaves us eight back in the division, all but killing any hopes of a division title for us, and three back for the Wild Card. We're on the road against the Blue Jays and Orioles, and then we've got the All-Star break. Which I am greatly looking forward to, so some of our guys like Mike Greenwell and Rondell White can get some rest, and hopefully we can get the ball rolling again.

BREAKING NEWS
Following this rout against the Blue Jays our star shortstop Barry Larkin was diagnosed with a broken finger that will sideline him for approximately a month. This injury is really bad for us, especially because Barry was crushing the ball at the time he was injured. Here's his line from his last ten games:
In his place I've decided to call up top prospect Freddy Sanchez. I decided not to turn shortstop over to Wil Cordero because Cordero is an absolute butcher with the glove, and between starting against lefties in the outfield and filling in at first and left and third occasionally he gets plenty of at bats. Sanchez's minor league stats from this season and vitals:

Jeff Suppan got a little roughed up again, enough for his ERA to go up by almost a full run. He allowed six runs on ten hits in 4 1/3 innings. The offense was decent, with Jeff Frye going 2-4 with two runs driven in, and both Nixon and Mike Greenwell hitting triples. Nixon also went 2-4 to raise his batting average to .250. Pat Hentgen did do a solid job of shutting us down, though, holding us to three runs on eight hits over eight innings.

Thoughts: We had a pretty good series against the Jays that leaves us eight back of the division and 4.5 back of Chicago for the Wild Card. Next up we've got the Orioles as our last series before the All-Star Break. I'm really looking forward to the All-Star Break, especially in light of Barry's injury. It's a few less meaningful games Barry will have to miss with the injury. Hopefully Freddy Sanchez plays well in his stead.

I might have to start playing these games in manager mode instead of GM mode, because I think my manager wears a helmet and tries to eat his own tongue judging by some of the calls he makes. Like trying to sacrifice bunt the game tying run to second in the ninth inning with a .300 hitter at the plate, for example. Anyways, this was a tough loss mostly because Moyer gave us a really solid outing, giving up four runs in 6 2/3 innings while striking out six. Sorry I'm a little late to the party, but I believe that you have to re-sign the Hit Dog.
Yes, he's going to ask for money. However, you are Boston: YOU HAVE THE MONEY!!! He's a very good middle of the order hitter, has a swing built for Fenway, and might not end up having all the injuries that plagued his later career (that health rating looks pretty good to me!). Plus, you think the fanbase is going to let you off easy if you let the '95 AL MVP walk? Heck, he might even snag back-to-back trophies! How can you live with yourself if you do that?![]()
We're actually seven million dollars over budget right now. We do have some heftyish contracts coming off the books this season (notably Gordon and Slocumb), but we also have some guys in arbitration that are gonna ask for a big, big raise (Rondell White). If I do resign him it'll be out of the free agent pool so I can see how much money I have to play with.
As of now I'm planning on letting go of (salary amount in parentheses):
RP Tom Gordon (2,000,000)
RP Heathcliff Slocumb (1,550,000)
3B Tim Naehring (1,850,000)
SP Tim Wakefield (1,200,000)
And depending on what they ask for I want to bring back (same deal as before):
INF Bret Boone (920,000)
SP Butch Henry (1,050,000)
C Joe Oliver (1,100,000)
And I'm definitely bringing back these guys, but some of them are gonna get some fat raises (same as before, *=will probably be demanding a big raise):
UTIL Wil Cordero (1,250,000) *
CF Rondell White (1,100,000) *
2B Jeff Frye (222,000) *
OF Troy O'Leary (310,000)
RP Rich Garces (146,000) *
I may actually not bring Jeff Frye back. I'm planning on handing second base to Freddy Sanchez next season, but Frye has played really well this season and I want to bring him back as a back-up middle infielder. But at the same time I'm not gonna pay him a ton of money to sit on the bench and play 2B or SS once or twice a week. Most of the other guys, especially White, are gonna get paid big. If I can afford Vaughn after that then I'll probably go for it. But he's very much in limbo at this point.

We had a pretty exciting All-Star game this season, with the American League winning 10-7 in nine innings. Much to my surprise the only Red Sox selected to the squad were Clemens and Mike Maddux. I was extremely surprised that none of Nomar, Vaughn, Greenwell, or Stanley made it, even as reserves. I was also extremely surprised that Mike Maddux was selected since he is only a middle reliever, although his stats do look pretty.
Clemens was more of a no-brainer, as he's probably the leading candidate for the American League Cy Young award right now. He started the game and went three innings and allowed four runs while striking out three, getting a no-decision.
The All-Star Game MVP Award went to A's third baseman Jason Giambi, who pinch hit and hit two homers in his only two at-bats.
