    Adding a "captcha" to registration

I was thinking, since I've been noticing more spam than usual, would it be easy to add a Captcha to the registration page? It'd seem odd that vBulletin wouldn't have an easy-to-tick option for that.

    Hear hear, HGM!

    No-brainer.

It's also surprising to me (I know we've been over all this before, and talked about associated FireFox plug-ins, and what-not...) that when you hide/plonk/kill-file a member it just basically "minimizes" their posts in the thread. I would think it would be fairly obvious you'd want any threads started by the "plonkee" to disappear completely, as well, as part of basic vBulletin functionality.

But, there is a Captcha... I think maybe it's been a while since you all signed up, but I instituted one ages ago. (At least, I thought I did. In fact, I even got a complaint that it wasn't blind-person-friendly,so I had to add a sound-option to it...)

Well, I certainly was unaware considering I haven't registered in years.

Doesn't seem like it's doing it's job though.

Doesn't help if they are doing it manually. Perhaps a 24 wait before anyone can start posting?

If these are all actual people doing this registration and posting...I must commend them for wasting so much time.

One guy filled out an entire profile, had an Avatar and an AIM and was posting about Viagra. I don't see how you really stop it. Alot of these guys wait a couple of days after registering before posting anyway. I always check the new users and try to befriend them so I notice these things...

Does anyone actually respond to this form of "marketing"? Are they snagging any actual customers out of all of this?

I mean, someone must be, right? Or else no one would bother doing this over and over and over, would they?

    /muses on it a moment/

Well, I guess if registration's free, there's no real downside. But, like HGM said, it seems like an awful waste of time to me.

Re: Adding a "captcha" to registration

There are programs that can read captchas, so it doesn't really matter.

I use a program called jdownloader that types in the captchas automatically to download files from sites like megaupload/rapidshare.

    http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~mori/research/gimpy/

The fundamental ideas behind our approach to solving Gimpy are the same as those we are using to solve generic object recognition problems. Our solution to the Gimpy CAPTCHA is just an application of a general framework that we have used to compare images of everyday objects and even find and track people in video sequences. The essences of these problems are similar. Finding the letters "T", "A", "M", "E" in an image and connecting them to read the word "TAME" is akin to finding hands, feet, elbows, and faces and connecting them up to find a human. Real images of people and objects contain large amounts of clutter. Learning to deal with the adversarial clutter present in Gimpy has helped us in understanding generic object recognition problems.
Our related work on finding people and generic objects.
That's just one example of captcha recognition.

Hmm, sound would probably be easy too with a good speech-to-text program

A thinking question would be cool.

    Jon has 8 green pencils
    Allysa has 4 green pencils
    Jeramy has 3 red pencils
    Ron has 12 yellow pencils
    Paul has 5 red pencils

How many yellow pencils are there all together?
Not sure if you can implement something like that, but sound and thinking questions would probably work best. Edge to sound.
