    Offense or defense?

If you had to choose just one of these two options, which would you pick? Assume that you have league average pitching in both scenarios, and that you are playing in a neutral park in 2009.

    1. All of your team's position players are amazing fielders. Great range, handling, and arms. They all absolutely suck at hitting however, your team OBP is under .310.

    2. All of your team's position players are fierce sluggers. Your team OBP is over .410 and every player in your lineup hits at least 25 HR. However, none of them have even okay fielding. It is not uncommon for your team to make 4 or more errors in a game. Your catcher throws out <12% of baserunners. Your outfielders have horrible shoddy range.

    Re: Offense or defense?

Even with bad fielding it would be tough to lose with a team .410 OBP. However, I do prefer pitching & defense over offense, lucky I get to root for the Mariners I guess.

Like the actual makeup of the players, instead of just an aggregate team OBP, for example... How bad are the fielders in the all-offense team? Are they all 10 runs below average for their position? Or are we talking about 4 Greg Luzinski's manning the up the middle positions?

I'm pretty sure the question is just about what style you prefer :|

    Re: Offense or defense?

saving a run on defense is just as valuable as driving in or scoring a run on offense.....my preference though? I think having explosive offensive is more important throughout a season than explosive defense...and explosive pitching is more important than all of the above.

So, both teams are even in terms of run differential, then?

If it's the case that both teams are even, just a different style, I don't understand why the question wasn't just, "Which do you prefer, high-scoring games or low-scoring games?"

    Re: Offense or defense?

based on what you have listed the hitters win..

Even the top fielders are only worth about 20 RAR, while the top hitters, or at least the type you listed more like 35. or Hitting has a higher ceiling than fielding.

I'd take A-Rod over Beltre so offensive style is more important to me.

I will always show my love for the game's greatest italian born utility infielder in Minnesota.
