Please define "Greatest".....
Yes, though Albert Pujols has a chance to pass him. No one else is particularly close except maybe Jimmie Foxx.
As of now yes, that could change within a few years though(Pujols)
hahaha
Someone debated me on this earlier....I want to know if anyone honestly thinks otherwise.
Aaron's greatness was in that he was incredible for so long, but he was only sporadically the best hitter in his league, while Hornsby completely dominated the NL in the 1920's. Hornsby led the league in OPS+ 12 times, with 4 seasons of 200 or better. Aaron led the league 3 times with a high of 194. While he did play in a larger league (thus, harder to lead the league), he still just wasn't as dominant as Hornsby. Aaron's greatness comes from him consistently being in the top 3 or 4 of his league offensively for nearly 20 years, which of course is a damn impressive feat and he's without a doubt one of the greatest players of all time.
Aaron does slightly outrank Hornsby in terms of batting runs at 880 to 859, but that's because of 4000 or so more plate appearances, so Aaron has a case for having accumulated the most offensive value over his career among right-handed hitters, but any reasonable evaluation would incorporate peak as well as career value (for example, Ted Lyons had more overall career value than Sandy Koufax, but nobody would rank Lyons ahead of Koufax).
To sum up my argument:
I said that Aaron played forever basically, and that has a lot to do with why he is the home run king, the man has 3700 hits etc.
But playing a long time gives you those kinds of career numbers. He was great, not Hornsby great.
Hornsby averaged a .400 average for 4 seasons!
Hornsby was beastly, and if not for Ruth, would have been the greatest hitter possibly in the 20's.
Ramirez, def not!
He isn't even close to being right....But I honestly don't think he was thinking very deeply.
Nick Punto.
That is all.
don't let HAC see that.
While I don't think he's even at Pujols' level, let alone Hornsby's, I would hate to see this thread go without an Edgar Martinez mention.
Illini.
Yeah I need a Winn-Dixie grocery bag full of money right next to the VIP section...
