Looks like AA is doing what I had hoped he would according to Ken Rosenthal. Doubling the scouting staff and employing Tom Tango as a consultant. Nice, although I thought Tango was under the employ of the Mariners. Maybe he can hire himself out to as many organizations as he wants. Must be nice.

I'm pretty sure he was a consultant for the Mariners. I wonder if "consultants" are allowed to consult multiple teams. Seems like it might be a conflict of interest, though.

EDIT: Although I should be fair to DM, he did make major increases in every area of scouting his first priority upon taking the job..so that's a good thing. Now if he can work on the whole "looking at numbers" thing.......

The saddest part about both sides of this "arguement" is that it's not about scouting to the absolute exclusion of stats or stats to the absolute exclusion of scouting. To win these days, you've got to have both. KK, I hope for your sake this ass-clown is out as soon as possible, but I wouldn't count on it. Maybe he'll have an epiphany and realize he is the one standing in the way of his own team's success. Nah! Maybe it'll take Mr. Greinke and Mr. Bannister sitting him down and having a little chat with him about FIP and all those other bits of "NYUK-NYUK-NYUK gypsy math" to wake him up. I'm afraid his mentor's (Schuerholz) dim view of modern analysis means it's probably going to take his firing and that's not happening for awhile due to his contract running through 2014. Is it as bad as J.P. firing most of his scouting department and then disagreeing with Keith Law and losing his statistical abilities and walking around completely blind and somewhat aimless for the rest of his tenure? It would be nice to see the Royals (and the Pirates for that matter) be able to restore themselves to somewhere close to the levels they once enjoyed and the respect that comes with that. I'm pulling for you bud.

Yeah, I'm willing to give DM a little more time to learn and a little more time to see if his drafting can cover up some of his other flaws....but it's not looking good.

Yes, you're right, you need a good combo/balance of stats and scouting...DM is clearly, CLEARLY putting all his emphasis on the scouting, despite claiming to have "two full fledged sabermetricians" on staff, despite not being able to name one contribution that either of them have made (based on off the record conversations between him and 'sources.') We'll see what happens...at least DM appears to be in a better mindset this offseason..he is trying to attain young, controllable players and shed a lot of the dead weight.....but we'll see if he actually holds true to that. It would be a small step towards some redemption...

From reading the article, it seems as if its possible a lot of small market teams use this model. We know there is one GM who is skeptical of doing things the way AA is. So it would be safe to say there might be a couple GM's that also do it a totally different way.

One thing to notice however that would set them apart, is how they pay and treat their employees. It seems the Blue Jays are willing to pay more with more perks to being a scout with them compared to other teams. Which I think thats pure win right there. The demand to work for the Blue Jays has to be higher on a lot of scouts lists.

DM was involved in scouting, overseeing scouting and player development, that sort of thing in Atlanta. It's far too early to judge his work in that regard with the Royals. If he drafts and develops players well enough, that will be enough to cover up many of his flaws..if he can produce enough quality players, he won't have to go out and be a big player in the FA and trade markets, which would be ideal.

Whether that happens remains to be seen..but he's gonna need to produce some significant results in that area if he wants to cover up his flaws...we'll see.

Yep, he's a consultant according to this article, but the skeptic in me needs to see it confirmed by more sources before I'll believe it. Put it this way, it's a good start and it represents a clean break from the way things were done under J.P. Whether that results in more wins eventually is anybody's guess, but it looks like an actual plan and a good start. AA has also demonstrated an ability to listen, build consensus (what a concept), and then make a decision and move on to the next task. He has a massive task ahead of him though, make no mistake about it.
