    America's Past Time

What's important is that you do this in a way that pleases you.

I stole this quote from CatKnight. I don't want to be one of those that abandons dynasties and starts new ones every other week but I was just not comfortable with my Batboy character and while my Tigers dynasty was going mostly smooth, the lack of realism with early 1900 finances was just something I did not like.

My best method of telling these stories would be via newspaper style writing. And another dynasty has given me an idea.

Beginning in 1901, I will also sim every year and just see what happens. I wish to take it slower however and devote more details to each day. With box scores, articles, transactions and the like.

I'll probably do about a week in a day to set a decent pace so I can advance on this thing and, at the same time, not overwhelm readers with too much. So, we begin with April Fools Day...1901.

    WHITE SOX TAKE OPENER 8-6

    April 3, 1902

Chicago - The Chicago White Sox began the 1901 baseball season with an 8-6 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics Wednesday. At 1-0 on the season, the White Sox are tied with the Milwaukee Brewers atop the American League standings.
34-year-old SS Frank Shugart went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, an RBI and 2 runs scored. 2B Fielder Jones went 2-for-2 with 2 walks and scored twice. CF Sam Mertes went 2-for-4 with a double and also scored twice. LF Frank Huelsman went 1-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs as he scored one run.
The White Sox scored all 8 runs in the first three innings, including 5 unearned runs in the first inning. Philadelphia starting pitcher Chick Fraser retired the first two batters he faced but then was pulled with 2 outs in the first inning with the score 5-0 White Sox.
Fielder Jones began the 2 out rally by drawing a walk. Sam Mertes followed with a double that moved Jones to third. Frank Huelsman hit a grounder for what should have been the third out but Philadelphia's 1B Harry Davis made a bad throw as Fraser was covering first. The error allowed both Jones and Mertes to score and Huelsman to advance to second. Joe Sugden singled to center to score Huelsman, Frank Shugart doubled to left-center scoring Sugden and Frank Isbell doubled in the left field gap to bring in Shugart.
An identical situation occurred in the bottom of the second inning. The first two White Sox batters were retired before Fielder Jones again drew a walk. Sam Mertes singled to left field, advancing Jones to third. Then Frank Huelsman doubled down the third base line for two RBIs to make it 7-0 White Sox.
Frank Shugart tripled to deep center field to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Frank Isbell grounded to second to bring Shugart in to make it 8-0.
The score stayed that way until the top of the seventh inning. Phil Geier singled through the right side to lead off and then moved to second when Jim Holmes singled to left. Both runners advanced when Harry Davis grounded to third. With runners at second and third with one out, Harry Armbruster singled to right, scoring Geier and breaking up Clark Griffith's shutout bid. Lave Cross hit a fly ball into left field that Huelsman misplayed. The error allowed Holmes to score, Armbruster to advance to third and Cross to reach second base.
Nap Lajoie grounded to shortstop Shugart who threw to third base to get the out on Cross. Armbruster scored to make it 8-3. Socks Seybold grounded to third to end the inning.
With the score still 8-3 in the top of the ninth inning and Griffith still on the mound for the White Sox, Harry Davis doubled to deep right field to lead off. Harry Armbruster flied out to right field for the first out as Davis tagged up and reached third. Lave Cross doubled in the right field gap, scoring Davis to make it 8-4 White Sox. Nap Lajoie grounded to first for the second out, advancing Cross to third. Socks Seybold singled to center to score Cross to make it 8-5. Lou Bruce reached first on a fielding error by Shugart and Seybold advanced to second. Harry Barton reached first on a fielding error by 3B Fred Hartman to load the bases. Phil Geier singled up the middle, scoring Seybold to make the score 8-6. The White Sox then went to the bullpen and brought in Tom Doughert to face pinch hitter Billy Lauder. Dougherty got Lauder to pop up and Fielder Jones snagged the ball to get the final out to preserve the win.

    BREWERS BEAT ORIOLES IN OPENER

    APRIL 3, 1901

Milwaukee - The Milwaukee Brewers opened the 1901 baseball season with a convincing 8-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The 1-0 mark places the Brewers atop of the American League standings along with the Chicago White Sox.
Pink Hawley pitched a complete game, giving up 11 hits, walking a batter amd striking out 7. 3B Wid Conroy went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Hugh Duffy hit for the cycle in 5 at-bats, knocking in 3 runs and scoring 3 runs.
Duffy began the night with a leadoff homerun in the second inning for the game's first run. The next batter, Lou Nordyke, singled to center. Then, Claude Gouzzie reached first on a fielding error by 3B John McGraw. Nordyke advanced to second on the play. Conroy singled to right, scoring Mordyke and advancing Gouzzie to third to make it 2-0 Brewers. George Bone struck out and Pink Hawley lined out to right field. Gouzzie tagged up and scored on the lineout to make it 3-0 Brewers. Irv Waldron singled down the left field line, advancing Conroy to third. Tom Leahy singled down the right field line, scoring Conroy to make it 4-0 and advancing Waldron to third before John Anderson grounded to third to end the inning.
The Orioles struck back in the top of the third. After the first two batters were retired, Steve Brodie singled to left field and then advanced to second on a passed ball. John McGraw singled up the middle to score Brodie to make it 4-1 and then advanced to second on an error by CF John Anderson. Mike Donlin singled through the left side, advancing McGraw to third and Jimmy Williams singled through the left side to score McGraw to make it 4-2. Hawley then struck out Burt Hart to retire the side.
The bottom of the fifth began with McGraw committing a throwing error, allowing Tom Leahy to reach second. John Anderson lined out to center field for the first out before Duffy tripled in the right field gap, scoring Leahy to make it 5-2 Brewers. Lou Nordyke then grounded to third to score Duffy to make it 6-2.
Duffy led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double and, one out later, scored when Claude Gouzzie singled to right field to make the score 7-2 Brewers.
The Brewers added their final run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Irv Waldron singled through the left side to lead off and, after a Tom Leahy popup, John Anderson doubled to left to move Waldron to third. Art Goodwin came in to pitch for the Orioles, the fourth pitcher Baltimore would use for the game. He got Hugh Duffy to ground to short, the only out against Duffy, but that brought in Waldron to complete the 8-2 score.
