Tigers have offered salary arbitration to RP Brandon Lyon and CL Fernando Rodney. 2B Placido Polanco has not been offered.
Reported, the Mariners declined a trade offer that would've sent SP Edwin Jackson to the Mariners for RHP Brandon Morrow and RP Shawn Kelley.

If this had been reported by Buster Onley or someone like that I probalby would have disregarded it, but considering the sources it looks somewhat legit.
Could be a blockbuster win for the Tigers if that was the real package they would have gotten in return, pending any other players they lose, of course. From the sounds of the Fox Sports report it wasn’t Arizona who balked on the deal meaning it was the Tigers and/or the Yankees who passed. The Tigers had set their price for Granderson as Phil Hughes and Austin Jackson and with Jackson included in an outbound package I’d guess the Tigers would have been looking for Scherzer, either Jackson or Hughes, and then probably an additional prospect from the Yankees.
UPDATE: The Tigers would have received Scherzer, Jackson, Phil Coke, and Mike Dunn
What we don’t know is if this deal is dead, or just dormant.
I also wonder what Arizona is doing if they only get back Jackson/Kennedy. For HGM's sake (inb4 he says he doesn't have a favorite team/ doesn't care), I hope Arizona isn't this dumb and I have to believe they're not.
I don't really think Scherzer, Jackson, Coke, and Dunn is a very good package if they lose both Jackson and Granderson. Scherzer is better than Jackson, but Austin isn't that good, and Coke and Dunn are just bullpen arms. It's probably equivalent to fair market value, but I don't think the Tigers should trade those two for just "fair market value."
I think Jackson and Kennedy is a decent return for Scherzer, considering we don't know if Scherzer will continue to develop/remain healthy.

I was just hearing that this deal is not likely to happen, I think it was due to the Yankees not wanting to part with certain players.

Well, you've all heard it by now:
The Tigers trade CF Curtis Granderson* to the Yankees and SP Edwin Jackson to the Diamondbacks. The Yankees send CF Austin Jackson, P Phil Coke* to the Tigers, SP Ian Kennedy to the Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks sent SP Max Scherzer, RP Dan Schlereth* to the Tigers.
Incoming: Austin Jackson, Coke, Scherzer, Schlereth
Outgoing: Edwin Jackson, Granderson

That's 3 years, 15 mil for Lyon.
I want to just emphasize how retarded Ed Wade is. How does this guy keep getting work? Shawn Chacon should've done a better job of kicking his ass a few years ago.

Another look at the big trade from the Tigers' perspective.
This part made me chuckle, although if I were a Tigers fan I probably wouldn't be >.>Conclusion
There was no plan.
Reward manager Jim Leyland with a contract through 2011, then take away the best players on his team. That's something that has never worked well with Leyland in the past.
Use up your early-round draft picks on relief pitchers, then trade your star center fielder for relief pitchers.
Free up extra money for an offseason with a rather bland free-agent class.
Right now, I am failing to see exactly how the Tigers are going to put this puzzle back together and create a contender in 2011 and beyond. The only way I believe they can do it is the kind of trades that brought Carlos Guillen and Placido Polanco to the team in the mid-2000s. Can lightning strike twice? Let's hope so.
Because right now, it looks like dark days ahead.
As I said in the introduction, it's too early to know how it will turn out. Now with pitching overflowing, the Tigers may choose to move some to fill some holes. I hope that is the case.
But if they don't, the crop of upcoming talent (shortstop Cale Iorg or Audy Ciriaco; third baseman fill-in-the-blank; outfielders Brennan Boesch and Ryan Strieby) does not say "division winner" to me. It says, "Low-cost team making a profit for the owner and frustrating fans."
I've seen this rodeo before. The organization was completely berift of talent and the major league squad had no long-term projectable production in 2004 aside from Carlos Guillen at short, and Bonderman at starter. 2 years later, they won the American League.
I have my disagreements with the trade, but DD has earned the benefit of the doubt.

Do you think the Tigers will make a serious attempt at signing Kelly Johnson for some Scott Sizemore insurance?
