Next year isn't going to be the year. AA is just trying to (and doing a pretty good job of) putting the best team on the field without breaking the bank.

Never said next year was the year and that's all the more reason for AA to proceed as he is, finding undervalued pieces and putting a team together, rather than overspending on players who have similar value. This is probably a fifth place team next year and at best a fourth place team, but it appears our young prodigy has learned one of JP's few redeeming skills: Dumpster Diving 101.2012 is probably the earliest we'll see a turn around in the major league win column. Let's just hope when it happens that it doesn't distract AA from his organizational plan, like the pleasant surprise that was 2003 did to JP, not that JP ever had much of a plan. He kind of went with the wind. "I think I should make a move to contend today." and then tomorrow comes and it's time to make a move for the future. Make up your mind man!

Can we talk about how much Brian Sabean blows for trading for, and then non-tendering, Ryan Garko?

This move is flabbergasting.
...
Ed Wade and Dayton Moore need to be on notice. Sabean’s not letting you take that crown of most silly off-season move without a fight.
I didn't want it to go by without being recorded in this thread.

Re: the quote above this grit statement. Multiple sources have talked about how Jeremy Accardo and Cito Gaston absolutely do not see eye to eye and how strange it was to watch how poorly the Jays (read: Cito) treated him throughout 2009. In the Brian Sabean school of GMing: Automatic, no doubt non-tender material. In the intelligent school of GMing: tender him a contract and try to find a deal in the 2 months or so that you have until ST.
I'm sure some GM out there is interested in a guy with great stuff (mid-90's heat, splitter, decent slider) and from this admitted outsider's view a decent team oriented personality, even if our blind squirrel manager can't see it/holds some kind of ridiculous personal grudge. They got off on the wrong foot when Cito talked about possibly stretching out Accardo with the hopes that he could be a starter at the beginning of ST...I kid you not.
Oh well, might as well get something for him if your manager refuses to use him, or tell the manager to take a hike. Of course, in this town/country that's kind of akin to Notre Dame telling Knute Rockne to get lost, or Green Bay s**tcanning Vince Lombardi. Don't get me wrong Cito cannot hold a candle to either of those two, but for some reason the mind numbingly dim witted Blue Jay fanbase would have you believe that Cito Gaston is God. 2010 cannot go by fast enough, for the sole reason that Cito will be leaving to go to his 3 or 4 year "consulting" job (please AA, don't let him have any input into personnel decisions - Thankyou)

Suddenly nobody cares about John Lackey.
Five years, ~85 million dollars with the BoSox. Look like the Jays get cockblocked, when it comes to compensation picks that is.

It's a great deal for Lackey, surprised he didn't go to the Mets though.
Good deal for both sides I suspect.
It just looks like the Red Sox, no matter what they do, will always appear second best.
If these reports are accurate I don't think I'd miss any of those 3. A pitcher with a hip problem, a pitcher with diabetes and an outfielder who's 4th on the depth chart. Not jumping the gun yet though. The sources said Phillipe Aumont — a Canadian right-hander — is among the players headed from Seattle to Toronto in the deal; the source added the Philadelphia is expected to send one of its outfield prospects, possibly Michael Taylor, to the Blue Jays.
Outfielder Michael Saunders and right-hander Brandon Morrow were also among the Seattle prospects in play.
