Rookie Byron McLaughlin continued his impressive start to his Major League career with his first victory after six innings of one run ball. Stellar bullpen work, highlighted by rookie Steve Burke's first career save, preserved the victory for the home team.

    Crafty veteran Marty Pattin was able to shut down the Mariners lineup for nine innings in a game that didn't open up until the Royals' huge fifth inning. Royals leadoff man Willie Wilson led the way for the Royals, who won despite another quiet game from George Brett. Mariners starter Randy Lerch contributed another lukewarm performance, yielding five runs over six innings.

    The Mariners seemed to be in cruise control until the bottom of the seventh, when the Twins exploded for six runs to take the lead for good. Starter Rick Honeycutt seemed to tire in the seventh and the bullpen was unable to salvage the lead the offense had given them. The 2-5 hitters of the Twins went a combined 9-16 to lead the way for the first place club. Warren Cromartie, in his return to the lineup after a week absence was the lone bright spot for the Mariners in the loss.

    Ontiveros was traded to the Cubs in the offseason and really has no business being a starter in the Majors. The Sporting News' 1973 minor league player of the year hasn't developed as expected after a promising minor league start. Journeyman Mike Adams will man the hot corner for the rest of April.

    The Mariners, and especially starter Mike Paxton, were undone by some shoddy infield defense as the M's committed a season-high four errors in the loss to the Twins. Paxton only allowed one earned run, but was charged with four more unearned runs after his defense failed him all game long. At this point, it's clear that for Seattle to win games the margin for error is very small.

    Brett resumed starting full time after an in season trade to the White Sox last year. So far in 1977 he is 0-2 with a 4.26 ERA in three starts which is a far cry from his 10-12, 3.32 ERA season with the Sox last year. Bart Johnson will be recalled from AAA Charlotte to fill Brett's roster spot.

    The M's just couldn't figure out Twins starter Geoff Zahn, as they could never string together enough hits to take the lead at any point. Fernando Arroyo was the hard luck loser as his quality start went to waste. Warren Cromartie's miscue in right field allowed the winning run.

    Pudge seems to be back to full speed after the devastating knee injury suffered in 1974. He's back full time as the Red Sox' catcher and should be a dominant force behind the plate for years to come. Now that he's healthy and has proven to be back to form, the longterm commitment doesn't seem to be out of place. On the season, Fisk is batting .255/.309/.471 with two home runs in 14 games.

    Another day, another good Mariners start wasted by shoddy defense and lack of effort. This is a bad omen for a young team looking for an identity, and must be rectified soon in order to become a cohesive unit. McLaughlin was undone by three costly errors, two of them self-inflicted. The Athletics capitalized, scoring three unearned runs. That was all Joe Coleman needed as he spun a gem of a game, going the distance in allowing only one run.

    Carbo has been a steady, if unspectacular outfielder for the past nine seasons. He returned to Boston this past offseason, the site of his best season in 1975. He had been the Sox' DH to start the season as right field in Fenway is strictly the property of Dwight Evans. Veteran George Scott will fill in at DH for the rest of April.

    Randy Lerch finally contributed a quality outing in his third go round, handing A's starter Vida Blue yet another hard luck loss. The M's took advantage of a costly Earl Williams error at third base in the top of the third inning to score the necessary runs. Lerch and the bullpen took care of the rest, limiting the A's to only five hits all game.

    Looks like an expansion year allright. The low OBA is a bit worrisome. I think runs are going to be hard to come by sometimes and that is why the bad defense is such a heartbreaker. At least 3 good starts squandered.

    Yeah our offense is absolutely brutal, even if you consider the offensive context of 1977. We're going to be involved in a lot of blowouts and tight games that's for sure.
