Talking *~*Reversing the Curse with Alex Rodriguez!*~*

I did start a dynasty like this before but the file kept getting messed up.

The heartbreaking loss in Game 7 of the ALCS engendered extreme disappointment from the fans of the Red Sox. Would the curse ever be broken or are the baseball gods going to keep taking us to the brink of winning only to have the most unlikely players keep us from our goal: to win a World Series for the first time since Babe Ruth was not on the Red Sox. In mid December, the Red Sox take a huge step towards reversing the curse....

    December 18, 2003, 11:59 AM ET

    Deal would trigger Nomar-for-Ordonez

    ESPN.com news services

After weeks of talk and speculation about the proposed trade to send AL MVP Alex Rodriguez to Boston for outfielder Manny Ramirez, Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks is ready for a resolution.

Hicks said Wednesday that no agreement had been reached and that he has set a deadline of 6 p.m. ET Thursday. If no deal is made by then, he said Rodriguez will remain with the Rangers.

The Rangers owner said he spoke to Rodriguez on Wednesday.

"I told him, 'I don't know whether tomorrow, I'm going to wish you bon voyage or welcome back,'" Hicks told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Hicks didn't immediately return a message left by The Associated Press at his office. Rangers spokesman Gregg Elkin, however, confirmed Hicks' deadline.

Commissioner Bud Selig also had established a Thursday afternoon deadline for a deal or end to the talks.

Meanwhile, if a deal is consummated, the Red Sox have conditionally agreed to trade shortstop Nomar Garciaparra to the White Sox for outfielder Magglio Ordonez, ESPN's Peter Gammons has confirmed.

The Red Sox might also include reliever Scott Williamson as part of the agreed-upon trade of Garciaparra to Chicago, provided the Rodriguez-Ramirez deal is completed. Garciaparra does not have a no-trade clause, so Boston has the right to trade him to any team.

The Dodgers, once thought to be a likely trade destination for Garciaparra, apparently are no longer in the picture. White Sox general manager Kenny Williams wouldn't discuss the agreed-upon deal with Boston.

"I just prefer not to speak to anything. It's business between clubs. When anybody has something to announce, they'll announce it," Williams said Wednesday.

Hicks and Red Sox owner John Henry have been discussing a swap of Rodriguez for Ramirez, the sport's only $20 million men.

Talks have bogged down over the sheer magnitude of the money involved -- more than $300 million remaining on the two contracts, including deferred money -- and the Rangers' demand that Boston pay a big chunk of Ramirez's salary in addition to more than $179 million due Rodriguez.

Boston has balked at paying part of Ramirez's salary. Even without it, the Rangers would already save about $81 million in the deal. Talk has recently focused on whether the Red Sox would include another player in lieu of cash.

"From the Rangers' point of view, we're only going to do something that makes our team better," Hicks said. "We have no intention of compromising."

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and Rodriguez were meeting this week with an official from the Players' Association to discuss the deal.

The union would get involved if there was a renegotiation of the record $252 million, 10-year contract Rodriguez signed three years ago; any change would have to add some benefit for the player, according to baseball's labor contract.

Epstein, Rodriguez, and Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, were expected to meet with the union Wednesday for more talks, The Associated Press reported.

Henry hasn't responded to e-mails or calls from AP. But following a series of skeptical postings about the trade on a Red Sox fan Web site, a participant identified as "JohnWHenry" wrote, "Come on now. Don't start to waver on us. It's the holidays. Be of good cheer! It's going to be just a great, exciting season. Hang in there."

The postings came at 4:26 a.m. Henry has confirmed that he uses that screen name for the "Sons of Sam Horn" bulletin board.

The Red Sox did make one deal involving an infielder Tuesday, acquiring Mark Bellhorn from Colorado to replace free agent Todd Walker at second base.

Walker could be part of Texas' contingency plans for replacing Rodriguez. They've talked to Walker's agent about signing him to play second, which would mean moving second baseman Michael Young to shortstop.

The Red Sox have had arguably the busiest offseason, acquiring right-hander Curt Schilling from the Diamondbacks and signing free-agent closer Keith Foulke, who pitched for Oakland last season. Adding Rodriguez and Ordonez would significantly alter a lineup that led the majors in runs scored last season. The Red Sox were painfully close to reaching the World Series, but lost to the Yankees in an 11-inning Game 7 of the AL Championship Series.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
This trade could give the Red Sox a major force in Alex Rodriguez and get rid of Manny's 3 years of antics in a second attempt after placing Ramirez on irrevocable waivers earlier in the season with not one team biting.

    History:

    Rules

    • I will not make any unrealistic trades - it must make sense for both teams
    • I will use a random number generator at the start of the season to determine how many major trades (involving an 80+ peak/overall) I can make in a season - 0-5
    • I will use a random number generator to determine the max number of free agents I can sign in an off-season: 1-5 and then 0-10 for players 88+ overall (0-5 no 88+FA, 6-9 1 88+, 10 2 88+)
    • I can't go more than 10% over budget
    • I will use Mizerak's Negotiator App to avoid offering unrealistic contracts
    • I can't put a player that has 4+ seasons MLB experience in the minors for over 3 months

Terry Francona and Alex Rodriguez Press Conferences

"Terry, what are your expectations for this season?"

"I think we have a great group of players and if everyone can work as a team the sky is the limit."

"Is Pedro going to be starting on Opening Day or could Schilling?"

"We have to give the ball to Pedro on opening day. He has contributed so much to the Red Sox in the last 6 years and might be the most dominating pitcher in the majors. He deserves to start on opening day and will as long as everything goes as planned."

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hey Alex, are you excited to be on the Red Sox?"

"I am very excited to be part of this team. I want to win a World Series. I can hit, but so what? I'd trade my MVP for a World Series title no question."

"What do you think of the new manager, Terry Francona?"

"I've never talked to him personally but I've heard he really sends a great message to his players and knows how to handle a team. And he has spent half his life in professional baseball."

"What can you do to help the Red Sox?"

"I can do what I've always done, be a major performer on offense and work with my teammates towards a World Series."

"What do you think about the Curse of the Bambino?"

"It's ********. Obviously they have had more than their fair share of bad luck but the curse is just a made up thing being used as a scapegoat."

    Opening Day 2004!

Boston Red Sox (Martinez) @ Baltimore Orioles (Ponson)

    Top of the 1st

Johnny Damon, Bill Mueller, and Alex Rodriguez all get out. A-Rod couldn't even hit the ball to the pitcher in his first at bat as a member of the Red Sox.

    Bottom of the 1st

Pedro opens the game up by doing what he does best, striking out Brian Roberts. The Orioles also go down 1-2-3.

    Top of the 2nd

Ortiz strikes out as the Sox go down in order.

    Bottom of the 2nd

Javy Lopez doubles in his first at bat as an Oriole. Rafael Palmeiro grounds out but moves him to third and Jay Gibbons then singles to drive Lopez in for the first run of the game. Fernando Tatis ends the inning by grounding into a double play.

    Top of the 3rd

Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek are out quickly to start off. Bellhorn then prevents Ponson from not allowing a baserunner 1 time through the order by hitting a single. Then, Damon singles down the third base line moving Bellhorn up to 3rd. Bill Mueller comes up and gets a solid bat on the ball and it drops for a double, scoring both Bellhorn and Damon. A-Rod then gets his first hit as a Red Sox and hits a double down the 1st base line, scoring Mueller. Ortiz ends the 2 out rally by popping out to Brian Roberts but the Sox now lead 3-1.

    Bottom of the 3rd

Pedro strikes out Jack Cust and despite a bunt single by Roberts, he comes out unscathed.

    Top of the 4th

Magglio Ordonez leads off with a double that just missed going out, hitting the wall. Millar then grounds to second advancing Ordonez to 3rd. Trot Nixon comes up a hits a deep sac fly to CF to bring Ordonez home. Varitek flies out to end the inning.

    Bottom of the 4th

Miguel Tejada leads off with a single but Javy Lopez hits into a double play and Rafael Palmeiro strikes out.

    Top of the 5th

Bellhorn, Damon, and Mueller go down in order to end the inning.

    Bottom of the 5th

Jay Gibbons leads off with a single, Tatis follows it up by singling and moving Gibbons to third. Jack Cust and Luis Matos strike out and it's back to the top of the order. Brian Roberts doubled to deep center to bring in two runs. Melvin Mora hits a double after Roberts does to bring a run in and tie the game at 4. Pedro throws a wild pitch to move Mora to third but Tejada flies out to right, stranding Mora at third.

    Top of the 6th

The heart of the order comes up but does absolutely nothing, accounting for two ground outs and a strikeout.

    Bottom of the 6th

Rafael Palmeiro got the lone hit for the Orioles this inning but was stranded at first.

    Top of the 7th

Millar and Nixon start off with ground outs. Varitek walks but Bellhorn doesn't produce, popping out to 2nd.

    Bottom of the 7th

Jack Cust leads off with a double, Luis Matos then doubles to score Cust. Roberts grounds to third and More strikes out but Miguel Tejada comes up with a double to bring Matos home and take a 2 run lead. Javy Lopez strikes out to end the inning but the Orioles did some damage.

    Top of the 8th

John Parrish comes in for Sidney Ponson. Johnny Damon singles. Bill Mueller grounds into a double play. A-Rod doubles. Ortiz is intentionally walked but Ordonez pops out to end the inning.

    Bottom of the 8th

Alan Embree comes in to pitch. He hits Palmeiro, then Gibbons flies out. He strikes Tatis out and the walks Cust but ends the inning by striking out Luis Matos.

    Top of the 9th

BJ Ryan comes in to pitch. Kevin Millar grounds out. Ellis Burks pinch hits for Nixon but strikes out. Jason Varitek walks and Gabe Kapler pinch hits for Bellhorn. Kapler singles but Damon strikes out to end the game.

Final Score: Orioles 6, Red Sox 4

    April 6-9

    @

April 6: Pedro was not at the top of his game, giving up 6 earned runs in 7 innings. Bill Mueller had 2 RBIs but it was not enough to keep the Baltimore offense, which had all 9 starters get a hit, in check. Baltimore 6 Red Sox 4

    WP: Sidney Ponson (1-0)
    LP: Pedro Martinez (0-1)
    SV: B.J. Ryan (1)

April 8: The offense was powered by Johnny Damon's 3 RBIs and Curt Schilling's outstanding performance. The Orioles offense was nearly non-existent as the Red Sox win. Red Sox 4 Orioles 1

    WP: Curt Schilling (1-0)
    LP: Rodrigo Lopez (0-1)
    SV: Keith Foulke (1)

April 9: Magglio Ordonez hit 2 doubles and knocked in 3 runs as the Red Sox easily beat the Orioles. It was 7-1 until the bottom of the 9th, when Curtis Leskanic gave up 3 runs but it wasn't enough damage to come close to taking away the Red Sox' lead. Red Sox 7 Orioles 4

    WP: Derek Lowe (1-0)
    LP: Todd Williams (0-1)

    April 10-12

    @

April 10: This was a flat out ugly game. Kevin Millar scored the first run of the game on Toronto's SS Chris Woodward's error but the Sox never got on the board after that. Tim Wakefield went on to allow 6 runs in the next 1.1 innings and Toronto topped it off with 2 more of Byung-Hyun Kim later in the game to handle the Sox. Blue Jays 8 Red Sox 1

    WP: Pat Hentgen (1-0)
    LP: Tim Wakefield (0-1)

April 11: The Red Sox led by 4 runs at one point but Arroyo allowed 5 runs and the Sox never recovered despite Johnny Damon and Magglio Ordonez's 3 hit games. Blue Jays 6 Red Sox 5

    WP: Jason Kershner (2-0)
    LP: Mike Timlin (0-1)
    SV: Aquilino Lopez (3)

April 12: Pedro pitches a gem and gets multi hit games from Ordonez, Kapler, and Damon to lead the way to an easy victory. Red Sox 4 Blue Jays 1

    WP: Pedro Martinez (1-1)
    LP: Gustavo Chacin (0-1)
    SV: Keith Foulke (2)
