He's no longer the GM, though, Mike Rizzo is, and I'd say it's too early to grade Rizzo.

Is the grade just for the 2009 season or is it for their whole tenure? Houston your B grade for Melvin is good if your talking about his tenure, but for this year Melvin gets a D in my book.

Sabean has job security because of the season the Giants are having. He seems to be a very hit or miss type GM, and I think his misses outweigh his hits. He has excelled at assembling a pitching staff, particularly recently with the likes of Lincecum and Cain, but until Sandoval and Posey, the Giants hadn't produced a position player from their system in something like a decade, and that's a huge part of the reason why their offense is so bad. He's made some terrible signings - Michael Tucker a while ago moments before the arbitration deadline, costing the Giants a draft pick that they would've kept had he waited for the deadline to pass before signing Tucker, Barry Zito of course...and some terrible trades, most famously the A.J. Pierzynski for Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser deal, but also the two trades this year for Freddy Sanchez and Ryan Garko. For a while, he had some weird fetish with old veterans, signing tons of mid-30's players and hoping for the best...and that sort of works when you have the best hitter in history at his peak playing for you, but once that guy's gone, it leaves a team of over-the-hill nobodies...Lots of negatives, and I don't think his positives are anything special.

Minaya is a so-so GM but the injuries this year highlighted the extreme lack of depth that is partially his fault.

I graded based on an overall (again, quick and off the top of my head though) assessment, not just limited to this year.

In my book Bowden definitely gets a deserved F-! Mike Rizzo, so far, has done an amazing job and next year is looking up even if he does nothing else, simply because there are some dead contracts *cough* Austin Kearns *cough* that come due at the year's end. Plus he was able to pull off signing boon or bust Strasburg and another excellent prospect in Storen.
