But with these amatures you have even less of an idea then the guys in the bigs. I am not saying make it so say the #1 overall gets 1 million bonus... thats crazy... but have say a cap of 10 million or something like that thats scales its way down... it doenst guarentee the player that but it sets at least a limit

Doubt it. He'll probably be up next year.

Ackley will probably be ready in 2011. More so because there's no room for him rather than him being ready. His approach at the plate is already big league ready, all he has to do is hitting for power with a wooden bat and getting used to playing CF again.

Rangers fail to sign their 1st round pick, Matt Purke, who looks like will be headed to college.

I wonder being on the 40 man if it will start his arb faster? I know it means he can be called up this year (tho I think they said they would not do that a month or so ago) I see the seattle guy coming up 1st... i don't know why

Why? I mean..the now record is 15.6M for 4 years & 2 extra years of club control. That isn't even that bad. Yeah, you have less of an idea, but that contract is a steal if he projects as well as scouts think. If not, oh well, it won't kill their finances in any way.

Well if he's on the 40-man they're gonna have to call him up.

He most likely won't be up first unless there is an injury/trade or he switches positions. Our OF right now is pretty stacked.

It just means he has a guaranteed salary for the first four years of his career. After that, assuming all four are spent entirely in the majors, he'll be arb.-eligible for two more years before being FA-eligible.

Anyway, one more example here. When you hit on a prospect, no matter what you pay, you're getting A LOT more bang for your buck. Mark Prior signed for around $10 million. In his rookie year, using FanGraphs WAR, he was worth $7.2 million. In his second year, he was worth $21.2 million. In just one and a half years of playing time, the Cubs got performance worth nearly triple their investment. All together for his career, Prior was worth $46.2 million. He got paid $12.8 million plus his draft day signing bonus. Even an eventual bust more than paid off the investment.

Of course, yes, there are guys that bust and wind up providing nothing for an investment, but never an investment more than $10 mil at most, which is chump change for a Major League team. Strasburg could have one good season, blow his arm out, and would've gave the Nationals performance worth his contract.

Amateur contracts are astoundingly cheap overall, and while there's no way I could do a systematic study of this, I'd bet everything I own that drafted players in their first 3 MLB years provide more value for their overall cost than free agents in their first three years after signing a contract provide for their salary.

Why even bother with that then? Only two players have ever broken that barrier - one paid it off with his performance and then some (see above post) and the other is coming up.

No. Not how it works...at all...Porcello was on the 40 man when he signed in 2007. He didn't come up until this year.

Don't you have to call up everyone on the 40-man come September 1st?
