Oh I dont disagree on tha tpoint... I just think it would be better spent on CURRENT talent... if ur not wasting it on aging vets and young unprovens... you can keep a guy like carl crawford, josh becket, Holliday, etc

Well you're never going to get more of those guys without spending money on them when they're young.

Or you can pay for current talent and get guys like Barry Zito/Vernon Wells/etc..

Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever pay based on what they did EVER. If a guy is declining it's stupid to pay him for what he's DONE rather than what you expect him TO DO. Just this last off-season K-Rod was signed despite declining K rates & violent delivery and JJ Putz was traded despite lack of velocity and injury problems. Look how both of those have turned out (K-Rod has been pretty good, but I'm sure they were expecting more).

Point is, Young players will be under control for 6 years and are only going to get better. FAs aren't under control for 6 years and only get worse (This is speaking generally of course).

Possibly, sure, but that's harmful to the player's bottom line. You need to balance both the teams and the players needs and wants, and an open negotiation is the best way to do that.

Exactly. Whenever you sign a player, free agent or amateur, you're paying him for what you EXPECT HIM TO DO IN THE FUTURE. Thus, if you pay him based on what's he done, you're making a giant mistake. Rather, you need to use what's he done to make an educated projection on what you expect him to do in the future and pay him based on THAT.

It's weird to know the Nats are complaining about the Strasburg money and are perfectly fine with paying Adam Dunn more, for 2 years less and no realistic chance of making the playoffs while he's here.

    GREAT USE OF MONEY!

I believe it works the same as David Price. In the final 2 years he goes to regular arb.

[Edit : I believe the deal also means if he starts in the minors in a year he uses up one of his three options]

FWIW, Strasburg is on the Nats 40-man roster right now, so probably this year for him.
