    He was the first to come to mind. I don't recognize enough of the names from that era to make a guess, looking at the battng title winners of that era.

    Nor did I. I stumbled onto that accidentally when double-checking the Rod Carew answer, before posting.

    How about: This same guy had a 44-game hitting streak that season, which beat the previous standing single-season record of 42 games.
