    Mark Buehrle

Read a brief piece the THT about Buehrle's no-hitter, and the writer mentioned something I'd already been thinking about--Buehrle is possibly on track for 300 wins. He's 30, and has 133 career wins. He's on a pace to end up with 18 to 20 wins this year, which would give him 140 to 142 for his career. If he can pitch effectively another 10 years (till he's 40, which several pitchers have managed to do in recent years) and average 15 wins a year (which he basically has done so far, if you leave out his rookie year, when he only had 3 starts), he'd be at 290 to 292 wins. And if he's still effective at age 40 and only 8 or 10 wins away from 300, he'd almost certainly come back at age 41.

It's odd; I've never thought of him as a potential 300 game winner, or HoFer (and if he wins 300 games, he'll surely get in) but if you look at the numbers, it's certainly possible. Understand that of course, he most likely won't last till he's 40, or still be effective even if he's still hanging around (and even if he does last that long and is effective, he still might not average 15 wins a year), but it's possible.

its hard to say this OBVIOUSLY sicne he has the perfecto and a Ho hitter but he is like Tom glavine... solent and in the background... Glavine was always overshadowed by Smoltz and Madduz. I mean he obviously had a few GREAT years but other than that he was a durrable, good pitcher... much like mark

Buerhle's indicated that he'd likely retire once his current contract is up and that even if he doesn't, there's no way he's playing til he's 40.

nothing wrong with that I think... especially if you lose one's love of the game...

Well, I didn't know about that (and after all, he could change his mind); I just looked at the numbers. Obviously, aside from having the ability to last till you're 40, you also have to want to keep playing that long, or you won't do it.

Thank you for this link, my notes had it that Mark Buerhle wanted to be a Cardinal. It wasn't until the All Star game this year that I realized he was a lefty.

Well maybe the White Sox will honor him by trading him to the Cardinals, that's if he still wants to pitch/play the game. His family is in St. Louis and I think pitching for the Cards would be great for him and his family.

after his contract he would probably be willing to play one or two years in stl if he is good enough still....which i assume he would be.

I'm sure Tim McCarver thinks everyone should play in St. Louis for the Cardinals. Would kinda schmuck the league though...you know from 30 teams to one massive team overnight.
