Latest Rockies news:

Chad Qualls and Cla Meredith are being discussed. Also, the Red Sox are apparently interested in Garrett Atkins. The Rockies and Sox have had previous failed talks for Holliday and Helton though so we'll see how that goes.

If Atkins is sent to Boston the Rockies will be in need of a reliever...which the Red Sox obviously have plenty of.

Um, I'm not sure if you noticed Lowell is on the DL and could be out a fairly long time...

Atkins is in a contract year. He'd be a plug for now if Lowell is hurt that bad.

i could see this happening if Lowell's prospects of returning are in question AND if the price is right of course. I think the sawx want to keep youk at first. If Lowell is out it means either Green or Lowrie to third or Youk to third and Kotsay or a kid (Bailey/Anderson) and they are not going to go in a playoff run with a kid at 1st or with Kotsay there.

that said...i don't think they will be willing to give up much...maybe Saito, i doubt they'd do Delcarmen.

Atkins isn't worth Delcarmen, imo. He's really struggled this year at the plate which was the big reason he made it to the bigs in the first place. If it happened, I'd be ecstatic but I don't think Delcarmen will even be mentioned.

I could see the Rockies looking to trade for youth because Dan O'Dowd continues to play for the future even when we might be in the midst of a playoff run so I don't know if Saito would be part of the deal.

But we'll see. I don't personally see a deal happening for one big reason: the Rockies and Red Sox never get a deal done.

The A's could package Matt Holliday and Orlando Cabrera, both free agents after the season, for Escobar, who would step in as Oakland's shortstop of the future.

interesting trade but I cant see that really happening... Braves likly would not take on all that $$$ and I dont see the A's ONLY getting 1 guy for Holliday let along him AND a SS

The Red Sox have liked Escobar for a while, but don't match up very well for a trade.
Jacoby Ellsbury could be a fit, but Boston would then need to find another centerfielder.
Olney speculates that the Red Sox could use their young pitching to engage a third team in a trade, mentioning that Matt LaPorta, Shin-Soo Choo and Corey Hart could be a good fit.
Boston could eat some of the money left on Julio Lugo's deal to give Atlanta a stop-gap shortstop should they deal Escobar.
The Red Sox are not interested in Jeff Francoeur.
If Milwaukee and Atlanta discussed a Vazquez-Hart swap, the Brewers would likely have to kick in another piece.
The Twins could offer one of their many outfielders in exchange for Escobar. Delmon Young might not be enough to entice the Braves, but Michael Cuddyer or Denard Span could be.
The Dodgers would love to add Vazquez to their rotation, but Juan Pierre probably wouldn't be enough given his lack of power.
