    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    1999 MLB Amatuer Draft
    Top Players in the Draft:

SP: Jordan Tata - Tata has good movement on his pitches, and has a pretty good sinker for a 17 year old. His control needs a little bit of work though.

SP: Carlos Zambrano - Zambrano was a complete powerhouse last season, striking out 109 batters in 82 innings. His fastball is in the mid 90's, and he has a very good 2-seamer that he can throw for strikes.

SP: Jake Peavy - Peavy struck out at least 100 batters a season in his 4 years of high school, and has excellent control. He walked the most batters in his second year, walking just 16 batters in 76 innings.

    Our Draft Outlook

We're drafting second in the draft, just below the Detroit Tigers. As you can probably tell, the draft is absoultey filled with lots of pitching talent. I, however, could be taking a different path. With 2 of our outfielders (Henderson, Raines) likely to leave this season, we don't exactly have any up and coming outfielders except Victorino. I could be taking a starter first, or a outfielder, but we'll see what happens. The Draft Predictability has been set to -100 after what happened last year, and Foamy suggested it, so we'll give it a try.

    Round 1 Selection:

The Tigers selected Jordan Tata first, as expected, and so it was our turn. We had a very difficult decision to make, as last season we focused on hitters, and we didn't get the top level draft picks. But, we didn't have too many up and coming pitchers, and with our rotation struggling, we need some type of plan to solve the problem. With our first pick, and second overall, we went with Carlos Zambrano.

    Round 2 Selection:

25 other pitchers got selected by other teams, so the outfielders still remained. The best outfielder, Shane Costa, got taken by the Dodgers so he was off our list. We had a choice between, Rocco Baldelli, Curtis Granderson, and Victor Diaz. Diaz had a good OBP in high school, but lacks speed. Baldelli is a great fielder with some speed, but health concerns. Granderson is a average fielder, with great speed, and he seemed like the next smart pick, but we have Victorino set up. We decided to go with Victor Diaz.

    Round 3 Selection:

I was pretty happy with the 2 picks we got, and I would just pick anyone good in particular now at this point. This next player is from Mexico, he has a solid batting eye, and could be a solid first baseman in the future. Besides Lyle Overbay, we don't have many first baseman in the minors, and I feel like he could join our sqad in a few years.

    Round 4 Selection:

We needed to pick some pitchers, and this guy could be a pretty good set-up man in the long run. He has only 2 pitches, but he mixes them up well. He just needs to add some movement and then throw them for strikes.

    Round 5 Selection:

This guy has some the potential to have a solid pop in his bat, but we will have to be patient. He is a leftfielder that will struggle to make contact, but he has a good eye though. Also, he doesn't field well, and could make embarassing plays.

    Round 6 Selection:

With our 6th and final pick, we went with a catcher, Alvin Colina. Colina will probably have to fight for the backup job, as he doesn't have too much potential. He's not a very good hitter, and his fielding is barley acceptable.

    June Review

    Month Record: 10-17
    Overall Record: 32-44
    Runs Scored: 365
    Runs Allowed: 464
    Team Batting: .262
    Team Pitching: 5.62

    The Story Of June

This was probably the busiest month we've ever had. It began with the draft, and then, we made some changes in our roster, after a franchise record 15 game losing streak. Orel Hersisher was released on June 6th. He went 0-5 for the season with a 7.35 ERA in 45 innings. He wasn't effective out of our bullpen, and was just getting in our way. Jamie Young was promoted, and 3 days later, he went down with a broken ankle. We also lost Kevin Young on the same day, for the season, with a torn ankle ligament. Young ends the year with a .271 average with 7 homeruns and 24 rbi's. With Young gone, we promoted prospect Vladimir Nunez. Thankfully, he's stayed healthy and has pitched well so far. Aaron Boone was finally given a chance to start at 3rd base, but ruined his chance with a injury to his riptured disc. We eventually made a trade (see below), and it's helped us out. Our lineup is very strong right now, with 5 starters hitting above .300. Tim Raines and David Segui rank 3rd and 4th in batting average in the league. But on the other hand, no one in the rotation has a ERA below 5 except new starter Cory Lidle. Finally, Billy Ripken has been demoted to make way for rookie Gabe Kapler, and due to a injury to Henderson, Emil Brown is promoted.

On June 16th, the day after we lost Aaron Boone, we were left without a third baseman. We decided to search the league and try and trade our young starter, Livan Hernandez, who was 1-7 with a ugly 7.19 ERA in 12 starts. He was sent away to the Milwaukee Brewers, along with our overpaid shortstop Walt Weiss, who hit .213 off the bench. In return, we aquired rookie Aubrey Huff, a third baseman with potential, and reliever Joe Hudson. Huff is in his first season in the MLB and hit .335 with 9 homeruns and 49 rbi's in 63 games. Hudson pitched last year with the Brewers, and posted a 3.15 ERA. He started in AAA ball this season, and had a 2.77 ERA in 48 innings.

Since the trade, Huff has contiuned his success, hitting .279 with 2 homeruns and 18 rbi's in the #5 spot. Hudson on the other hand hasn't been consistent, with a 8.74 ERA in 11 innings. Hudson is currently pitching out of the mop-up role.

    Events Of June

6-9: We pick up a win for the first time in nearly 3 weeks, with a 7-3 win in Colorado. Craig Counsell picks up his first homerun for the season and drove in 2 runs. Estes pitched 8 great innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits.

6-12: In interleague play, we blow a 5-1 lead in the 8th inning, as Rheal Cormier allowed 4 runs that went to Dreifort, and 1 to himself. In the 9th, we win the ball game as Raul Ibanez won it with a bases-loaded walk.

6-16: Joe Hudson and Aubrey Huff make their debuts, as Hudson gives up 3 runs in relief to David Wells, without making a out. Huff went 1/4, as his first hit was a homerun in a 12-6 loss to Oakland.

6-19: We rally from 3 runs behind in the 7th and 8th inning versus Texas, and the game goes to extra frames. In the bottom of the 13th, Chris Stynes led off with a double, and David Segui singled him home, beating the Rangers 6-5.

6-23: The D'Backs explode for 14 runs in Anahiem, as Huff went 4/5, with 3 runs, 1 homerun and 5 rbi's.

    Injuries

6-6: Kevin Young - Torn Ankle Ligament (5 months)
6-8: Jamie Walker - Broken Ankle (2 months)
6-15: Aaron Boone - Ruptured Cervical Disc (3 months)
6-28: Rickey Henderson - Sprained Back (2 weeks) * Gabe Kapler has been promoted from AAA to fill his spot

Really enjoyable dynasty you've got going here. Keep it up . Kinda makes me want to start one with the '09 Jays game I just started.
    Active Dynasty

    Paused Dynasty

YEAH DAAAAWG: Thanks! Glad you're enjoying this!

    Mid-Season Review

    Overall Record: 36-52
    Runs Scored: 406
    Runs Allowed: 529
    Team Batting: .262
    Team Pitching: 5.50

    The First Half of July

We don't have much to look up too, with a 4-8 record and injuries to 2 of our starters. Shawn Estes was the first, suffering a wrist fracture in the first week of July. Geriemi Gonzalez finally got a chance to prove himself on our club, making 2 starts with a era of 4. Our reliever, Gil Heredia was the next to suffer, and will miss the rest of the season with a Reptured Cerival Disc. Heredia was nothing special this season, as he finishes with a 0-1 record and a 6.08 era in 50 innings, about 2.7 points higher then last season. Jose Santiago was signed from free agency to replace him, and Santiago can't be worse then Heredia. Darren Dreifort was the next to leave, and Jeff D'Amico has gotten another chance to make some starts. So, basically, we're using some rookies from the minors now, and for the most part, they're nearly big league pitchers.

On the hitting side, Gabe Kapler has filled himself into our lineup, and is hitting .311 in 45 at bats. Could he become our next centerfielder next season? Aubery Huff is hitting just .207 since we aquired him, but I think its just a slump, and it would feel wrong sending a overall .301 hitter to the minors. Dave Hansen has surprised us this season, with a .333 average and a .414 obp off the bench. We feel confident in using Hansen when Segui needs a day off.

But, Tim Raines is by far, the most exciting player in the lineup. He is a immediate spark plug in our offense, becoming our leadoff player in the lineup. Raines has moved up to 2nd in batting average in the league, hitting a amazing .356 with a .444 OBP. Tim also has 25 doubles already, and is on pace to break his record of 38 in 1984. Tim has a chance to tie the record for the oldest player to win the BA title, as he would tie Ted Williams, who won the title at age 39 in 1958.

Our catchers have had nothing to write home about this season, as we lost Reed again in the month of May. The free-swinging duo of Fabregas and Decker isn't exactly a recipe for sucess. Both catchers would be playing backup on any other team.

Aubrey Huff has fallen into a slump since joining our club, but assuming he comes out of it soon, he should be able to hit 20 homeruns, and might have a chance of winning ROTY. Chris Stynes has proved to be a success, although his average has fell just below .300. With 57 rbi's, he set a personal record, passing over his 49 last season. David Segui ranks 4th in rbi's, and he has a very good chance of reaching 100 for the first time in his career. David should easily reach 20 homeruns again before the season ends, and it looks like he'll probably be the all-star game again. Craig Counsell has been good with the glove, but not so much with the bat. With Craig going into arbitration this season, we're not sure how much longer he will remain a D-Back. Shane Halter has spent most of the season in AAA, but has filled himself into a platoon at shortstop with Counsell. Halter has showed signs of power, but doesn't get on base very often, and doesn't play great defense. Dave Hansen has managed to earn some starts at third base, or first base, and has raised his batting average 100 points higher since last season.

Orlando Palmerio is having a fine season, but with Kapler coming out of nowhere, its kind of tough having to place Orlando on the bench. He does fine in pinch-hit situations, and it's probably where he will be suited for a while. Tim Raines is easily the best outfielder on this list, does he even need a explanation? Rickey Henderson has still found ways to get on base, and can steal bases, as he is tied with Raines with 11. He will be coming off the DL after the break. Jim Eisenreich has still proved to be valuable, with his .327 average ranking 3rd on our club. Raul Ibanez hasn't proven himself, but, he's got upside, and we don't have any outfielders ready in the minors yet. Kapler is off to a good start since being promoted, although our scouts think that he can't keep it up for long.

Estes was off to a good start, but, what happened? His ERA is almost at 6! He's given up 15 homeruns this season, the most in his career, and we hope that he turns it around when he comes off the DL. Wells was looking really ugly lately, but after 2 starts with back to back wins, it seems like his slump is over. Hermanson isn't terrible, but, he's not a pitcher meant for the #3 spot in a rotation. Cory Lidle has been excellent since his transition to the rotation, and he leads the club with 6 wins. Dreifort has been dissapointing so far, as his wildness is starting to affect his performance. D'Amico and Gonzalez have made call-up starts, and I can only say that D'Amico doesn't appear to be ready yet, after 4 starts.

I wasn't expecting much from Hudson, and he's proven me right. Santiago hasn't pitched a lot of innings yet, but he's hit his peak already, and I'm not sure how long he'll last in the 'pen. Heredia has been our worst off-season move, as we owe him another million for next season. Nunez hasn't looked great, but he's one of the better relievers. With more expierence, we think he'll become better each time he pitches. Cormier has stayed healthy, although he still sucks, and he's just been unreliable as our bullpen's been. Omar Daal was doing good in April, but ever since then, he's returned to his old self, with hitters hitting .300 off of him. Embree is the only reliever who
s been good all season, and he should be able to save at least 20 games this season. Embree has some more movement on his pitches too, as hitters hit just .222 off our closer.

Manny Ramirez emerges as '99 Home Run Derby Winner

Manny Ramirez of the Cleveland Indians has won the 1999 homerun derby in Boston, beating out Barry Bonds in the final round with 3 homeruns. In the first round, former winner Alex Rodriguez led the round with 11 homeruns. He lost his power in the second round, hitting just 1 homerun. Ramirez ranked third in round 1, with 8 homeruns. He would lead the second round with 5 homeruns, and faced off against Barry Bonds, as Bonds hit 4 homeruns in round 2. In round 3, Bonds led off with 2 homeruns, and Manny tied him with just 1 out, recorded 2 outs, before hitting one last shot off into the summer night.

    NL All-Stars win exciting Slugfest

The National League all-stars have defeated the American League All-Stars in Boston, 11-10 last night. A total of 10 homeruns were hit, 6 by the NL and 4 by the AL. Larry Walker scored the first run of the game for the NL in the first inning, on a SF by Vladimir Guerrero. Back to back homeruns from Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez gave the AL all stars a 2-1 lead. Dean Palmer picked up a solo shot in the 2nd to make it 3-1, Manny Ramirez, the HR derby winner, blasted one in left field in the third to make it 4-1. Roberto Alomar picked up a RBI, scoring Travis Fryman, and increasing the lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning. In the top of the 5th, Edgar Renteria and Vladimir Guerrero went yard, to decrease the lead to 2 runs. The AL would fight back, as Albert Belle picked up 2 rbi's on a double, and a bases loaded Roberto Alomar walk, ending the inning with a 8-3 AL lead.

In the top of the 6th, Ryan Klesko hit a solo shot to make it a 8-4 affair, and with a Jeff Bagwell homerun in the top of the 7th, the lead was cut down to 3. But after a RBI double from Dean Palmer, and a third RBI from Roberto Alomar, the AL got the runs back and made the score 10-5. In the top of the 8th, Reggie Sanders picked up a pinch-hit double to make it 10-6, and a Armando Benitez wild pitch scored another run to make it 10-7.

The wheels would come apart for the AL in the top of the 9th, as Larry Walker and Jeff Bagwell led off the inning with homeruns, making it 10-9. Mike Piazza would ground out, but scored Vladimir Guerrero, and tie up the game. With the infield in, Ryan Klesko hit a weak groundball to the shortstop Rodriguez, and he didn't have enough time to throw it home and made the sure out at first, and the NL regained their lead from the first inning, making it 11-10. Antonio Osuna pitched a perfect 9th inning to cap off this spectacular evening.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    D'Backs Cut Ace
The Diamondbacks have announced they have traded their ace, David Wells, to the Minnesota Twins. In return, the D-Backs aquire 26 year old, Latroy Hawkins. David Wells ends his 1999 stint with the D-Backs, going 5-9 with a 5.98 ERA in 90 innings. Latroy Hawkins comes over with a 7-6 record, and a 4.95 ERA. Overall, his career numbers aren't pretty. He is 16-24 with a ERA of exactly 6 in 319 innings.

Manager Buck Showalter: "Latroy has 4 good pitches, and I think that when the Twins used him, he was young and inexpirenced. Now that he's been in the majors for almost 4 seasons, I feel he will be more effective then Wells, and I'm excited for his next start."

The Arizona Diamondbacks have sent 32 year old reliever Rheal Cormier to the San Fransisco Giants, along with prospect Andrew Good, to the San Fransisco Giants for reliever Cory Bailey. Cormier struggled this season, coming off a injury from last year. He went 2-3 for the season with a 6.47 ERA. Hitters recorded a OBA of nearly .300 off of him. After the season, he is set for free agency, should the Giants not re-sign him.

Cory Bailey has been one of the better arms in the Giants 'pen this season, going 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 56 innings, and being named to the all-star game. Last season, in a career high 75 innings, he went 2-0 with a 3.12 ERA. Bailey has a fastball and a change, and is known to be at inducing ground-balls. He is currently making $1.2 million this season, and will not need to re-negotiate until the 2001 season.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    July Review

    Month Record: 10-17
    Overall Record: 42-61
    Runs Scored: 482
    Runs Allowed: 624
    Team Batting: .262
    Team Pitching: 5.57

    The Rest Of July

We continued playing at our same level, below the league average. A rash of injuries has hit us, as we lost 4 players in under 2 weeks. D'Amico is out for 5 weeks, our new starter Latroy Hawkins is out for 2 weeks, and then we lost Shane Halter and reliver Joe Hudson on the same day. To solve this dilemma, we called up Jaret Wright to replace D'Amico, Estes came off the DL to replace Hawkins, Billy Ripken is filled in for Halter and Koplove is promoted to replace Hudson. Outside of the injuries, we went 6-9 for the rest of the month. Our lineup has still been pretty good, and our BA is now 2 points below the league average. But, Tim Raines has now fallen to third in BA in the league, as Luis Castillo of the Marlins has taken over the lead. During the trade deadline, we bid farewell to our ace David Wells, and reliever Rheal Cormier.

We didn't really have one player that stood out among everybody this month, but Rickey Henderson hasn't been talked about too much. The 40 year old is hitting just .233 with 6 homeruns and 16 rbi's, but he ranks third in OBP on our team with a .363 average. He ranks second with bases stolen, stealing 13 so far this season. On July 23rd, Henderson scored run #2000 of his career.

    Events Of July

7-11: Geremi Gonzalez makes his D'Backs debut, pitching 4 innings, giving up 4 hits, 2 walks, while striking out 4. He gave up 3 unearned runs, as the Diamondbacks won 5-4 over the Padres.

7-18: Alan Embree blows a 3-run lead in the 9th inning at Wrigley, and we go to extra innings. With 4 runs in the top of the 12th, we pick up the win, 11-8. Jeff Reed and Aubrey Huff each blast homeruns.

7-21: Greg Maddux shuts us down in Atlanta, holding us to 6 hits over 8 innings, as we did not score a runner, losing 8-0.

7-31: We won what was probably the wildest game of the franchise, winning over the Marlins 15-14. We had to use 8 pitchers, none lasting more then 2 innings, as Gabe Kapler picked up the winning hit in the bottom of the 11th. Jeff Reed picked up 5 rbi's, and Kapler went 4/7.

    Injuries

7-5: Shawn Estes - Wrist stress fracture (4 weeks)
7-8: Gil Heredia - Ruptured cerivcal disc (3 months)
7-10: Darren Dreifort - Stretched knee ligament (5 weeks)
    7-22: Jeff D'Amico - Ruptured knee ligaments (5 weeks)
7-28: LaTroy Hawkins - Broken Finger (2 weeks)
7-31: Shane Halter - Sprained neck (2 weeks)
7-31: Joe Hudson - Shoulder Seperation (4 weeks)

Well, you know your pitching sucks when no one leads the team in ERA, even after 5 months of the season. We got hit with some bad luck again, losing Tim Raines for the rest of the season, due to a broken ankle. Because of the injury, he won't qualify for the BA title because he doesn't have enough plate appearences. We also lost Jaret Wright for a couple weeks, but he's returned. Newcomer Cory Bailey, who became a temporary closer due to Embree's struggles, hurt himself with a strectched ankle ligament. Shawn Estes continues to dissapoint, with a ERA that increased to 6.43. LaTroy Hawkins struggled too, but was signed on to pitch for the 2000 season. With the September call-ups coming, we look forward to wraping up this season, which, despite all our trouble this season, is a improvement from last year.
