    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    Pre F/A Negotations

    F/A Eligible Players

    (2B) Luis Sojo
    (3B) Scott Livingstone
    (C) Chris Tremie
    (SP) Jose Rijo
    (RP) Gil Heredia
    (LF) Pete Incavagila
    (IF) Jeff Reboulet
    (RP) Tony Castillo
    (RP) Ricardo Jordan

    Arbitrational Players

    (C) Steve Decker
    (CF) Orlando Palmerio
    (SP) Dustin Hermanson
    --------------------------------------

    Luis Sojo (.269, 5 HR, 40 RBI)
    ASKING PRICE: 2 Y $1,600,000
    Released

Luis had a fine season, but he only had a OBP of .308, which is pretty low. Also, he's more of a backup player, and I feel we can find a new second baseman in the market. Plus, I don't even think he's worth a million.

    Scott Livingstone (.241, 7 HR, 37 RBI)
    ASKING PRICE: 2 Y $540,000
    Released

Scott played below our expectations, and I'm glad he was willing to take a decrease in his pay to stay with us. But, he wasn't good hitting or fielding, and it's time to move on without him.

    Orlando Palmerio (.257, 2 HR, 45 RBI)
ASKING PRICE: $1,090,000 OUR BID: $920,000
    Win

I thought Orlando would slap some more hits, but he had a good OBP of .347. If he can get some more hits, then he'll make a pretty good centerfielder on our team. But, he has to stop trying to be agressive on the bases. (5 SB, 10 CS)

    Pete Incaviglia (.196, 10 HR, 44 RBI)
    ASKING PRICE: $430,000
    Released

Incaviglia, like Livingstone, was willing to take a decrease. He did have some pop in his bat, but other then that, he struck out a lot and didn't get on base very often. To be honest, I think he might be just about washed up now.

    Chris Tremie (.345, 0 HR, 0 RBI)
    ASKING PRICE: 2 Y $210,000 COUNTER: 1 Y $230,000
    Re-signed

Chris Tremie isn't going to have a batting average like this next season, but we only would have had 3 catchers if we released Tremie. I feel that Tremie is a good emergency option, and considering what happened this season, it wouldn't be a bad idea to keep Tremie. Plus, it's a 1 year deal, so if I don't need him, I can just release him.

    Jeff Reboulet (.154, 0 HR, 4 RBI)
    ASKING PRICE: 2 Y $220,000
    Released

Jeff got hurt and missed most of the 1998 season. When he was healthy, he wasn't great at all, and with his low health rating, he would be pretty useless to our sqad.

    Steve Decker (.200, 0 HR, 2 RBI)
ASKING PRICE: $390,000 OUR BID: $300,000
    Win

Steve Decker is the reason we had to sign Chris Tremie. He got hurt during the season and had to sit out. Decker will be used the same as Tremie, a emergency catcher.

    Jose Rijo (7-12, 5.09 ERA, 125 K)
    ASKING PRICE: 3 Y $1,930,000
    Released

Rijo wasn't very effective this season, and was asking for too much. Either way, we can find a new starter in Cory Lidle, or simply search in the market. But, I give some credit to Rijo for staying healthy this season and not giving us too much hassle.

    Gil Heredia (5-3, 3.38 ERA, 54 K)
    ASKING PRICE: 2 Y $1,160,000 COUNTER: 2 Y $1,040,000
    Re-Signed

Heredia did very well in our bullpen as the set up man. This was one of his best seasons in his career, so I'm not sure he'll be this effective next season, but he won't suck. Plus, if Embree ever goes down, Heredia could fit in as the closer.

    Tony Castillo (3-3, 4.68 ERA, 36 K)
    ASKING PRICE: 2 Y $550,000
    Released

Castillo mostly pitched if the starting pitcher tired early, or if it was a blowout. I could easily use one of my younger pitchers in the minors to replace him, or wait for Cormier to come off the DL to replace him. Either way, we have enough relievers prepared, and we won't need Castillo.

    Dustin Hermanson (1-2, 8.69 ERA, 22 K)
ASKING PRICE: $1,040,000 OUR BID: $900,000
    Win

Hermanson was used too early and pitched in the majors starting at age 22. He needed some seasoning in the minors, and got to pitch as a call-up. He hit 3 years in MLB service time cause of other teams usage, and I simply don't want to let a potential solid pitcher walk off on us. Not sure whether he will start next year or not though.

    Ricardo Jordan (0-0, 8.04 ERA, 10 K)
    ASKING PRICE: 2 Y $290,000
    Released

We needed him due to a injury, and we needed him to simply just pitch in blowouts. He would be useless on our team, and so we released him.

    What we need to aquire:

    A Second baseman
    A Infielder
    A Third baseman
    Any Pitching
    A Outfielder

    With that, F/A begins.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    D'Backs Sign Kevin Young

It has been reported that the Diamondbacks have signed Kevin Young to a 1 year deal, worth $1,980,000. Kevin Young is a first baseman, who can also play thirdbase. With David Segui already locked up at first, it is expected that Kevin Young will hold third base for the 1999 season. Last season, Kevin Young hit .325 with 13 homeruns and 50 rbi's in 252 at-bats. He was used to hit off the bench for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Young first started his career with the Pirates, from 1992-1995. He was signed in the off-season by the Kansas City Royals, and played for 1 season, 1996. The Pirates aquired him again from 1997-1998.

"We really feel like we got a bargain with this guy." says GM Colangelo. "Kevin Young has never had a chance to start before, and after the numbers he put up in about half a seasons' worth of at bats, I feel he will have a excellent season. He is a very large improvement over our previous third baseman, Scott Livingstone."

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    Pitching Depth is Added

The young 26 year old Omar Daal has signed a 2 year, $1,380,000 contract. The reliever was a workhorse for the Toronto Blue Jyas last season, pitching in 109.2 innings. He went 6-2 with a 4.19 era, striking out 75. A native from Venezuela, he began his career with the Dodgers at age 21 in 1993. He stayed with them until 1995, signing with the Expos from 1996-1997. He was traded during the '97 season, going to the Blue Jays and stayed with them for the rest of '97 and 1998. Daal has a average curve with good movement, a fastball that tails away from the hitter, and a mediocre change. In his career, he has pitched for long durations in relief, and can start games if needed.

    D'Backs aquire Versatile Stynes

The Diamondbacks have signed utilityman Chris Stynes to a 2 year deal, worth $1,680,000. Last season, as a Cincinnati Red, he hit .321 with 6 homeruns and 49 rbi's in 527 at-bats. Stynes is known for his versatility, as he can play both the infield and the outfield. In his career, he has spent the most time in left-field, playing 172 games and making 13 errors. With the outfield already filled up, it is expected that Stynes will be starting at second base for the season. The 26 year old from Queens began his career with the Kansas City Royals in 1995, and stayed with them until 1996. He went to the Cincinnati Reds in 1997 and was used as a backup, and in 1998 he turned into a starter.

    Estes Comes to Arizona

Shawn Estes has reported to sign a 2 year contract with the D'Backs, worth about 2 million each season. Estes was in the all-star game in 1997, and went 19-5 with a 3.18 era. Hitters had a OBA of just .219 off of him. Last season though, he struggled, going 7-11 with a 4.05 era, fighting injuries with his shoulder and his knee. The southpaw can be a little wild, but has a great curve with good movement, a fastball and a change, and finally, a frisbee slider. Estes owns a career 29-24 record, with a 3.67 era in 421.2 innings.

    Spring Training 1999
    Rule V Draft

After looking at some dynasties on this forum, and seeing that they use the Rule V Draft to keep leagues balanced, I decided to implement one in this dynasty.

    Rules

Anyone over Age 25 and in the minors is eligible
Anyone with the age and a overall below 75 is eligible
Losing teams draft, and winning teams provide the players.
The team order in the draft is the same as the amatuer draft, worst team drafts first.

    The Order:

    1. Detroit (2B) Aaron Ledesma Baltimore
    2. Arizona (OF) Raul Ibanez Seattle
    3. Tampa Bay (3B) Mike Lowell New York (A)
    4. Minneosta (SP) Trevor Wilson Anahiem
    5. Colorado (RP) Lou Pote Anahiem
    6. Milwaukee (SP) Paul Byrd New York (A)
    7. Chicago (N) (RP) Vic Darensbourg Florida
    8. Boston (RP) Rust Meacham Houston
    9. Cincinnati (RP) Vic Darensbourg Florida
    10. Philadelphia (RP) John Johnstone San Fransisco
    11. Texas (3B) Scott Brosius New York
    12. Montreal (1B) Erubiel Durazo Atlanta
    13. Pittsburgh (IF) Russ Johson Houston
    14. Oakland (RP) Shigetoshi Hasegawa Anahiem
    15. Chicago (A) (SP) Robert Person Toronto

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

D'Backs set to begin second chapter in franchise history

Spring training has just wrapped up, and its that time of year again: Baseball! Now that Arizona is under a year of expirence in the MLB, what should we expect this season? Last season, we suffered through the expansion pain, losing 103 games. Back then we had a pretty tough roster to watch. Walt Weiss at shortstop, Scott Livingstone at third base, and who could ever forget Billy Ripken? His OBP of .222 and sloppy defense was just un-bearable. With new guys joining the team this season, here is what Jerry Colangelo had to say:

"Our team is obviously more solid this season. But we still are looking to improve anywhere we can. Our pitching has many question marks floating around, for example. Shawn Estes will need to stay healthy to be effective, Hernandez will have to bear down this season and give up less runs. Let's not forget the bullpen either. Alan Embree is not your typical closer, and we don't know if we'll get the same results again. Dustin Hermanson showed great stuff in spring training, but he needs to keep it up in the majors. Finally, Rheal Cormier was injured last season, and he also pitched well in spring training, but he needs better command of his pitches."

"Our offense for the most part, is up to major league standars, I believe. But we got aging outfielders in Rickey Henderson, Tim Raines, and Jim Eisenrich. Raul Ibanez was a great pickup in the Rule V Draft, but he's already 26 years old, and hasn't shown too much in the bigs yet. Behind the plate, we got Jeff Reed returning. His body was really bothering him last season, and we feel like that was the reason he struggled last season. If he stays healthy, he'll be a solid hitter in the bottom of our lineup."

"So while our team has improved, there is still much work to be done. I know that if we stay healthy, we should be able to easily win 70 games in 1999."

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    1999 Arizona Diamondbacks

    CATCHERS:

    Jeff Reed (.223, 4 HR, 19 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.6 M until FA 1999
    CAREER: (.246, 49 HR, 250 RBI)

Reed was our #1 starter last season, and got plagued with injuries. When Reed is healthy, he is willing to take a walk, and has a little bit of pop. We plan on using him with caution this season.

    Jorge Fabregas (.248, 8 HR, 39 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $900 K until FA 2000
    CAREER: (.262, 18 HR, 154 RBI)

Fabregas was a nice fill-in for Reed last season, as Jorge has one of the best arms in the league, gunning down 45 baserunners out of 90. His defensive asset is very valuable off the bench.

    INFIELDERS

    David Segui (.302, 22 HR, 90 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $2.45 M until FA 2001
    CAREER: (.283, 91 HR, 441 RBI)

David is the nucleus for our club, leading the club in homeruns last season. He's not your ideal cleanup hitter, but we just don't have any sluggers right now.

    Chris Stynes (.321, 6 HR, 49 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.68 M until FA 2000
    CAREER: (.318, 12 HR, 85 RBI)

A new guy on the team, Stynes makes excellent contact, and can drive the ball in the gaps. Stynes can also play the outfield, and other infield positions.

    Craig Counsell (.191, 0 HR, 17 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $207 K until ARB 1999
    CAREER: (.240, 1 HR, 33 RBI)

Aquired from the Marlins last season, Counsell is known for playing good defense in the infield. He will stuggle to make contact, but has good speed and works the pitcher.

    Kevin Young (.325, 13 HR, 50 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.98 M until FA 1999
    CAREER: (.265, 52 HR, 231 RBI)

Signed in free agency, Kevin Young put up good numbers off the bench with the Pirates last season. Young has great power, and can also work the walk.

    Walt Weiss (.234, 0 HR, 29 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.8 M until FA 1999
    CAREER: (.256, 23 HR, 341 RBI)

Weiss is probably the most over-paid player in the National League. He really struggled at times during the season, and played below-average defense. But, he still has a excellent eye, and looks to get on base.

    Dave Hansen (.245, 2 HR, 20 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $320 K until FA 2000
    CAREER: (.263, 17 HR, 124 RBI)

Dave is a sloppy defensive player, but a great asset off the bench. He'll pick up some hits here and there, and follows the D'Back style with a great eye to put himself on base.

    Aaron Boone (.235, 1 HR, 1 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $207 K until ARB 2001
    CAREER: (.241, 1 HR, 6 RBI)

Aaron was a call-up last year, and is too good to be placed in the minors. He doesn't really have one great skill, instead he's average at most. Aaron will be tested this year with major league pitching, and we'll see how he does.

    OUTFIELDERS:

    Rickey Henderson (.236, 5 HR, 28 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.2 M until FA 1999
    CAREER: (.284, 257 HR, 949 RBI)

Rickey is the decline of his career at age 40, but he still has the speed to cover the outfield. He has a incredible skill to take pitches, and despite a poor batting average, he had a OBP of .359.

    Orlando Palmerio (.257, 2 HR, 45 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $920 K until ARB 1999
    CAREER (.256, 2 HR, 60 RBI)

Orlando fell short of our expectations last season, with a mediocre batting average. But he has the great skill to take a walk, and that is a valuable trait on our club. He's also a good fielder too, making 4 errors in 126 games in center.

    Tim Raines (.254, 10 HR, 39 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.9 M until FA 1999
    CAREER: (.294, 169 HR, 939 RBI)

Raines had a major 67 point drop in his batting average, and it may fall even lower this season. Raines still has very good speed, and makes pitchers work to get him out.

    Raul Ibanez (.279, 2 HR, 9 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $207 K until ARB 2000
    CAREER: (.232, 3 HR, 13 RBI)

Raul was a rule 5 pickup in Spring Training, from the Seattle Mariners. He makes a good backup over Jim Eisenrich, and is a good fielder. Raul is a solid hitter too, who can hit spray line drives everywhere.

    Jim Eisenrich (.284, 8 HR, 67 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $780 K until FA 1999
    CAREER: (.293, 59 HR, 531 RBI)

Eisenrich put up a nice season, for someone who wasn't in the opening day lineup. But, according to our scouts, he's past his prime now and can only come off the bench to hit.

    ROTATION:

    David Wells (5-19, 4.71 ERA, 139 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $2.55 M until FA 1999
    CAREER: (111-104, 4.09 ERA, 1217 K)

David really didn't get many runs behind him, and he shouldn't have lost 19 games. Wells recorded a DICE of 3.77, lower then his career average of 3.99, for proof. Besides that, Wells doesn't allow many walks, and makes a good ace.

    Shawn Estes (7-11, 4.05 ERA, 109 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $2.05 M until FA 2000
    CAREER: (29-24, 3.67 ERA, 364 K)

Estes was picked up in the FA market in the off-season. He comes with a good curve, and a average fastball. He needs to locate these pitches with more consistency if he wants more sucess.

    Orel Hershisher (9-12, 3.74 ERA, 131 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $2.1 M until FA 1999
    CAREER: (188-135, 3.29 ERA, 1917 K)

Orel had a good season, lowering his era from 4.47 in 1997. Hershisher is a ground-ball pitcher who relies on his defense to win games. He also has a good fastball that tails.

    Darren Dreifort (4-8, 3.88 ERA, 114 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.42 M until FA 2001
    CAREER: (10-19, 4.00 ERA, 223 K)

Darren was a reliever, who converted to a starter mid-way through last season. With a good fastball that has velocity, and a moving slider, he racks up a lot of strikeouts.

    Livan Hernandez (9-17, 4.83 ERA, 145 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $207 K until ARB 1999
    CAREER: (18-20, 4.26 ERA, 219 K)

Livan has good velocity on his pitches, but they don't have enough movement. Hitters hit Hernandez hard in some games, but other times Livan was un-hittable. Hopefully, we'll see some dominance from him this season.

    BULLPEN

    Dustin Hermanson (1-2, 8.69 ERA, 22 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $900 K until ARB 1999
    CAREER: (13-11, 4.88 ERA, 188 K)

Dustin struggled last season in his time promoted, but after a good spring training, he earned a spot on the club. Dustin has a 97 mph fastball that he can throw for strikes, and a good complimentary slider.

    Rheal Cormier (2-4, 5.82 ERA, 15 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $318 K until FA 1999
    CAREER: (40-43, 4.27 ERA, 440 K)

Rheal hurt his fibula last year, which could've affected his pitching. Aside from that, Rheal was wild, but made a lot of ground-ball outs. He'll be looking to rebound from last year.

    Cory Lidle (5-5, 4.60 ERA, 72 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $207 K until ARB 1999
    CAREER: (12-7, 4.14 ERA, 126 K)

Lidle pitched fairly well from the 'pen last season. He's got 5 pitches that he can throw for strikes, and they move pretty well. He just needs to stop serving meatball pitches to the big opposing hitters.

    Gil Heredia (5-3, 3.38 ERA, 54 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.04 M until FA 2000
    CAREER (24-24, 4.16 ERA, 308 K)

Heredia pitched excellent last year, but our scouts thought it was a fluke. Gil has great control of his pitches, and won't walk many batters. He also uses his defense to make outs.

    Omar Daal (6-2, 4.19 ERA, 74 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.38 M until FA 2000
    CAREER: (18-13, 4.90 ERA, 239 K)

Omar was another off-season aquistion, from the Blue Jays. He has 3 good pitches that he can throw for strikes, and have good movement on them. Hitters do tend to feast off this guy every now and again.

    Alan Embree (2-6, 5.13 ERA, 37 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.21 M until FA 2002
    CAREER: (9-12, 4.85 ERA, 150 K)

Alan turned into the closer when Paul Assenmacher got hurt last season, and has held the job since. Alan picked up 20 saves last season, and blew just 1. He has a fastball and a slider, and mixes up the 2 pitches very well.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    D'Backs win dramatic opener
Dave Hansen pinch-hit single wins game

The Diamondbacks made opening day exciting for baseball fans, as they pulled out a 6-5 extra inning victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Dave Hansen was the hero of the game, picking up the game winning hit off the bench in the bottom of the 11th off opposing pitcher Scott Randall. The basehit scored Jim Eisenrich, who was walked intentionally in the same inning.

David Wells ran into some trouble early, as he gave up a 2 run homerun to Dimitri Young in the top of the first. The D'Backs would fight back and pick up a run in the second, with a RBI from catcher Jeff Reed. The hit scored Chris Stynes, who led off the inning with a triple for his first hit as a D-Back. In the bottom of the 4th, Stynes led off the inning again, with a single and stole second. After a groundout from Kevin Young, which moved Stynes to third, Jeff Reed came through again with a single to tie the game. Craig Counsell would pick up a double to left field to move Reed to third, and David Wells scored him with a bunt, to give the Diamondbacks a 4-3 lead.

But the Reds would not let up, as Dimitri Young led off the top of the 5th with a 1 out double. Reggie Sanders stole the lead from the D'Backs, launching a homerun over the left field fence to give the Reds a 5-4 lead. Wells would strikeout Bret Boone and induce Melvin Nieves to ground-out to third.

In the bottom half of the inning, Rickey Henderson led off the inning with a single. A passed ball from Reds catcher Brook Fordyce allowed Henderson to move up to second. Raines grounded out to short, and David Segui allowed opposing pitcher Osvaldo Fernandez to make a error, putting runners on the corners with a out. Chris Stynes took advantage of the mistake, flying out to the warning track in rightfield, allowing Henderson to score, tying the game at 5.

After the 5th, neither team would pick up a hit, as Cory Lidle pitched in the 7th inning and pitched 3 perfect innings in relief. B.J. Ryan and Scott Sullivan combined for 3 innings also, leading the game to extra innings.

A scoreless 10th inning led to the 11th, and Reggie Sanders broke the stalemate with his second homerun of the night, out to left field again off of reliver Omar Daal. Daal would retire the next 3 batters, but the damage was one.

In the bottom of the 11th, Chris Stynes led off the inning with a 1 out double. Jim Eisenrich would pinch hit for Kevin Young, as Young went 0-4 with 3 strikeouts. Eisenrich was intentionally walked, putting runners on first and second, with Jeff Reed. He wouldn't get the job done this time though, as he popped up to third. With Craig Counsell at the plate, he drove a linedrive into centerfield, scoring Chris Stynes to tie the game. With the pitcher spot due up, Dave Hansen came off the bench to bat, and hit the ball the other way to right field, scoring Eisenrich to win the ball game!

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    April Review

    Month Record: 12-8
    Overall Record: 12-8
    Runs Scored: 98
    Runs Allowed: 114
    Team Batting: .266
    Team Pitching: 5.35

    The Story Of April

So far, everything seems to be working out for our team! But I don't expect our sucess to last for long, we played mostly our divison rivals this month. Our divison is the weakest in the NL, and our season will get tougher. For now, let's talk about our sucess! Our hitting seems to be up to par, as Tim Raines hit .364 for the month, and David Segui leading the team with 5 homeruns. Chris Stynes has been playing hard-nosed baseball, with a .371 average and 16 rbi's, 10th in the NL, the most by a second baseman. Jim Eisenrich made a case for himself, hitting a amazing .391 off the bench, coming through in the clutch.

Shawn Estes leads the team with a 2.97 ERA

Our pitching on the other hand, needs some work. Shawn Estes has been successful so far, leading the team with a 2.97 era. He does not have a decision yet though, in 5 games he's started. Omar Daal has pitched nicely from the 'pen, with a 3.29 era, far below his career average. Now for the bad news: Orel Hershisher has been murdered this month, not litteraly, but he's given up 17 runs in barely 4 innings of work! Hitters get on base 56 percent of the time! Besides Estes, no one in our rotation has a ERA below 4.40. Cory Lidle hasn't been good out of the pen, with a 5.66 era, despite 23 strikeouts in 20 innings. If our pitchers become more effective in May, we could have first place in our possesion.

    Events Of April

4-7: We win opening day in dramatic fashion, beating the Reds 6-5 in 10 innings!

4-18: Entering the top of the 9th with a 9-5 lead, Gil Heredia surrenders 4 runs to blow the lead. The game goes to extra innings, and in the bottom of the 10th, with 2 outs, Chris Stynes singles up the middle to score Orlando Palmerio and save the game!

4-22: Shawn Estes pitches excellent, giving up 3 hits, 4 walks, and a run in 8.2 innings, but the D'Backs only knock a run off of Clay Hensley. It takes 10 innings to finish the game, as Tim Raines was the hero of the game, picking up the game winning hit to score Jim Eisenrich!

4-28: We were down 6-4 entering the bottom of the 9th against the Dodgers' closer, Takashi Saito. Kevin Young led off the inning with a single, and stole second on defensive indifference. Craig Counsell would single to score Young, and cut the lead to a run. Jeff Reed struck out, and, with 1 out, Aaron Boone would double to score Counsell and tie the game. With the pitcher spot due up, Dave Hansen came off the bench to hit, and did his job, scoring Boone to win the ball game, 7-6!

4-29: David Segui blasts 3 bombs over the Dodgers, picking up 5 rbi's as the D'Backs win 7-1 over L.A.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    Hershiser Moves to 'Pen

Could this be the final season for Hershiser? The way his season has been so far, there's a good chance for that. Hershiser has started 4 games so far, and has been blown up by opposing batters. In those 4 games, he has racked a total of 7.2 innings. Not innings per start, but his total! He's given up 22 runs and 24 hits, racking up a 25.83 ERA, and a .533 OBA. The D'Backs have gone 0-4 when he starts, and in his most recent start against the San Fransisco Giants, he made the longest outing of the season, pitching 3 innings, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits. Below shows his game log for 1999:

    Name: Game Log.JPG
Views: 522
Size: 27.7 KB

"I'm just at a loss of words for my letdown," says Hershiser. "I suck right now. I'm hurting the team, and maybe sending me to the 'pen can strengthen things up."

In replacement of Orel Hershiser, 26 year old Dustin Hermanson will take his spot. Hermanson has pitched solid out of the 'pen, recording a 3.32 in 19 innings. He was a starter in 1997 for Montreal, going 8-8 with a 3.69 ERA in 158 innings. Last season, he was a spot starter in AA, appearing in 24 games while starting 11. He was called up in September and recorded a 8.69 ERA.

    May Review

    Month Record: 10-19
    Overall Record: 22-27
    Runs Scored: 219
    Runs Allowed: 280
    Team Batting: .257
    Team Pitching: 5.25

    The Story Of May

I knew we wouldn't keep winning, and this month proved me right. We were streaky this month, putting up a 6 game losing streak, then a 7 game losing streak, and a 9 game losing streak to wrap up the month. We had to face some of the best teams in the final week, the World-Champion Seattle Mariners, the hot Atlanta Braves, and the divison leading St. Louis Cardinals. During the month, we really didn't have a lot of blowups, just a lot of close games where in the end, the other team had more runs than us. Our pitching evidently improved, our team ERA decreased by a tenth, but we didn't get as many hits as last month. Orel Hershisher was moved out of the rotation, and at first, gave up runs coming in the game, but now he seems to be pitching some scoreless innings.

We saw different players this month, as we suffered through 4 injuries. Jeff D'Amico got a couple starts in thanks to the injury of David Wells. D'Amico didn't pitch like we thought he would, and he needs more seasoning in the minors. Our catcher Jeff Reed seperated his shoulder, and we used Steve Decker and Jorge Fabregas. Chris Tremie got some at-bats in too when Decker sprained his knee, missing about 7 games. Next, we lost Aaron Boone and Shane Halter was called up. Finally, we lost Dave Hansen. Hansen was on a hot-streak at the time of the injury, which sucks, as he was hitting .319 with a OBP of .429. He was used when Kevin Young fell into a slump. Since then, Young has hit 5 homeruns.

Omar Daal had a good month as the setup man for Embree, posting a 2.81 ERA for the month. Ever since he came over to Arizona, he has performed at the level the D'Backs were looking for. Manager Buck Showalter likes his competitiveness, and he likes using the crafty lefty to escape jams caused by other relivers. Daal has struck out 29 for the season, while walking 8. Embree and Daal have been the only successful pitchers in relief so far, as every other pitcher has a ERA above 5.

    Events Of May

5-6: We blow a 3-0 lead to the Giants in the 7th inning, as Stan Javier drove in 2 runs, and Rich Aurilia added another. The game goes to extra's and in the 12th, with 2 outs, Craig Counsell singles home a run to give us a 4-3 lead. But Omar Daal gives up a single to Doug Mirabelli that scores Bill Meuller, and so the game goes on. Cory Lidle came in to pitch in the bottom of the 14th, and in the bottom if the 15th with the bases juiced, Bill Meuller hits a infield single to win the ball game.

5-12: Going into the bottom of the 9th in a 2-2 game versus the New York Mets, Rickey Henderson leads off the inning with a walk. Orlando Palmerio bunts him to second for the first out, and Raul Ibanez strikes out for the second out. David Segui intentionally walked, and Chris Stynes scored everybody with a 3-run homerun into the left field stands!

5-15: You think a 7-3 lead going into the 7th inning is a comfortable lead for us right? Wrong. Against the Phillies, we give up 1 run in the 7th and 8th inning, and with Alan Embree coming in, he leads off the inning by striking out Chase Utley. Gregg Jefferies then hits a homerun to make it a 1 run game. Bobby Abreu works a walk to put the tying run on first, to which Scott Rolen grounds out for the second out. Bob Hamelin drew a walk, sending up the solid hitting Mike Lieberthal to the plate. Mike blasts the ball to rightfield, but Jim Eisenrich caught the ball in front of the warning track to seal the deal!

5-17: Mark Portugal of the Phillies shuts us down for 8 innings, and as we go into the bottom of hte 9th we trail the game 3-1. With closer Ricky Bottalico coming in to pitch, Orlando Palmerio starts the inning with a double. Rickey Henderson worked a walk, and Ricky hit David Segui to load the bases. Kevin Young came through in the clutch, driving home 2 runs with a single to tie the game. Walt Weiss would then fly out to center. With 2 outs, Craig Counsell doubled over the right fielder Abreu, to score Segui and give us a comeback victory!

5-30: We lose 5-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals, as Ron Gant drove in all the runs with 3 homeruns and 5 rbi's. David Wells was the victim of 2 homerun and 3 runs, and Gil Heredia gave up 3 more runs.
