Hansen accepts cut, and bench role
The Diamondbacks continued to re-sign players, signing Dave Hansen to a 3 year deal, getting paid $320,000 a year. He made $500,000 this season. Hansen is hitting .230 with 2 homeruns and 14 rbi's this season, with a OBP of .335. He was sent over to the D'Backs from the Dodgers that invovled 3 of the D'Backs prospects. With Hansen staying with the team, it seems that Scott Livingstone will hit the market this off-season.
"Hansen is a good guy to have off the bench." says Colangelo. "He really likes Arizona, and it shows from accepting less money on this deal." "Hansen is pretty valuable because he will find ways to get on-base, and he's a good fit in our clubhouse."

The Story Of September/October
We played a little better then we have in the past, and for the most part, we gave our call-ups some time, and just tried to beat anyone we could and have fun with it. We signed some guys to stay with our team for the next season, and made decisions on what to do with the players who are un-signed. Outside of our team, we watched the American League fight for the playoff spots, as the Orioles have won the divison for the first time since 1983, and the Royals going to the playoffs for the first time since 1985. It should be a fun October to watch this year.
Jim Eisenrich hasn't been talked about much this season, but he played in the most games of his career this season at age 39, and recorded career highs in: RBI's (67), Hits (156), and Walks (44). Eisenrich has mostly been a pinch-hitter throughout his career, and actually started off on the bench. But he played well and earned a spot in the lineup. For the season, he hit .284 with 8 homeruns and 67 Rbi's.
"I just wanted to thank the Diamondbacks for letting me start this season." says Eisenrich. "I always felt that I could fit into a lineup as a starter, but I've never been given a chance until now. I really feel like I contributed to the team this season, and I can't wait for next season, bench-warmer or not."
Events Of September/October

9-6: We carry a 4-1 lead over the Dodgers but Livan Herandez allows a pinch-hit to Todd Hollandsworth to tie it up in the 9th. The game goes to extra's, and Rickey Henderson hits a double to score Palmerio and win us the game.
9-8: Orel Hershiser pitches 8 strong innings, giving up a run, 3 hits, and 2 walks. The offense comes through as we win 9-2 over the San Diego Padres.
9-19: We pull of a dramatic win at home, in the bottom of the 9th inning with the bases loaded, Rickey Henderson draws a walk as the D'Backs win 4-3.
9-20: Another dramatic win over the Dodgers, this time with 2 outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th, David Segui singles home the winning run.
9-22: Down 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th, Tim Raines leads off the inning with a single, followed by a SF bunt from Jim Eisenrich. David Segui was intentionally walked, and Luis Sojo pulled off a dramatic 3-run homerun to top the Rockies, 5-3!
9-27: In the bottom of the 11th, with 2 on and 2 out, Luis Sojo pulls off another thriller, hitting another 3-run homerun over the Giants, winning 4-1!
10-2: This would be our final win for the season, as we score 15 runs in Chicago, as Darren Dreifort pitches 7 and 2/3, giving up 1 run on 5 hits and 4 walks.

I definitely enjoy seeing the Marlins, Mariners, and Royals doing so well. 2 of the worst teams over the last 30 years, and a team constantly in flux due to payroll restrictions.
Perhaps the late 90's fire-sale never occuring will produce a dynasty in S Florida as well?
Foamy: Yea I hope the Marlins don't pull off a sale myself! It would be cool to see them get into the playoffs year after year.
1998 MLB Playoff PreviewALDS Series:
vs
The Mariners owned the best record in the American League, winning 101 games this season. The team is led by the greatest shortstop in baseball today, Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez jacked 43 bombs over the fence this season with 132 rbi's. They also have the power-hitting center-fielder, Ken Girffey Jr with 40 homeruns. To top off the offense, they have veteran first-baseman Edgar Martinez, with a .334 batting average and a OBP of .424. In terms of pitching, they have triple-crown winner Randy Johnson leading the staff, and rookie closer J.J. Putz who converted 33 saves out of 40 chances.
Kansas City had to fight to make the playoffs this season, narrowing out the Yankees by 3 games. The Royals have the young Mike Sweeney at catcher, with 25 homeruns and a .335 batting average. Center-fielder Johnny Damon was a 20-20 player this season, hitting .341 and scoring 145 runs. Jermaine Dye is the nucleus to the lineup, with 38 homeruns and a 138 rbi's. 17-year old Daisuke Matsuzaka is the best pitcher on the staff with a 2.24 era in 84 innings, and veteran Jeff Montgomery is the closer, with 36 saves this season.
The Royals, with a team era of 4.28, don't have enough depth to stop the Mariners hot offense, but if the Royals can get to the Seattle 'pen, they could explode off their weak relievers.
Prediction: Seattle 3-1
vs
Cleveland has scored the most runs in the American League, with 963. With batting leader Manny Ramirez hitting .357 for the Tribe with 46 homeruns, and Jim Thome with 50 homeruns and 143 rbi's, you have a dangerous cleanup and #3 hitter duo. They also got pop from third baseman Matt Williams with 37 homeruns and DH David Justice, also with 37 homeruns. Their pitching has been plagued with injuries, and their replacements haven't done too well. Brian Tallet with a 5.86 era, and Brian Anderson with a 6.45 era. Ace Dwight Gooden is their bright spot with 15 wins and a 3.63 era.
The Orioles have a decent offense, with Roberto Alomar leading the team with a .322 batting average and 36 stolen bases. Eric Davis, a 30-30 player at age 36 is impressive, but not his .248 average and .319 OBP. Rafael Palmerio, the cleanup hitter, and Brady Anderson at leadoff each have 31 homeruns to power the O's. They have a strong 1-2 punch in the rotation, with Mike Mussina as the ace with 19 wins and a 3.54 era. Next is Doug Drabek also with 19 wins, and a 3.08 era. Arthur Rhodes should be able to shut down the Tribe with a 1.99 era and 19 saves in 20 chances.
This will be a close series, but the Indians have a over-powering lineup that the Orioles can't handle.
Prediction: Indians 3-2
NLDS Series
vs
The Padres scored the 4th lowest runs in the National League, with 716 runs this season. They lost Ken Caminiti for the series, losing 20 homeruns and 98 rbi's. Replacement George Arias, with a .262 average won't help much. Clean-up hitter Greg Vaughn leads the team with 34 homeruns and 100 rbi's and first baseman Wally Joyner brings a .287 average with 20 homeruns. Finally, veteran Tony Gwynn leads the team with a .308 batting average. The Padres used to have a good rotation, but lost Kevin Brown halfway through the season with a excellent 2.07 era. Clay Hensley has been a good replacement with a 2.57 era in 109 innings, but at age 19, can he handle the pressure in the playoffs? Mark Langston leads the team with 19 wins and 202 strikeouts, but can be a little wild.
The Marlins are led by All-Star outfielder Gary Sheffield, with 34 homeruns, and a healthy .323 batting average, with a outstanding .431 OBP. Luis Castillo and Edgar Renteria make a speedy 1-2 punch in the lineup, with 57 and 33 steals respectfully. But, they lost third baseman Bobby Bonilla, with 16 homeruns and 86 rbi's. They are also without outfielder Devon White, losing 35 doubles, 13 homeruns, and 59 rbi's. A.J. Burnett leads the team with a 2.52 era in the rotation, and 185 strikeouts. Jay Powell can cause a heart-attack, closing out 43 games but blowing 8.
The Marlins have enough pitching to stop the Padres, and their offense can overcome the Padres' rotation easily.
Prediction: Marlins 3-1
vs
The Braves are in trouble, Ryan Klesko, with 32 homeruns and 120 rbi's, and third baseman Chipper Jones with a .340 batting average, out due to injuries. Michael Tucker has filled in for Klesko with 9 homeruns and a .277 batting average but Howard Battile filling in for Jones has hit just 2 homeruns and a .280 average in 189 at-bats. Outside of the injuries, Ray Durham leads the lineup with 119 rbi's, and runs with 132. Javy Lopez leads the lineup with 27 homeruns at catcher, and Andruw Jones contributed 25 homeruns and 77 rbi's. Greg Maddux was down for 5 weeks during the season, but put up a 3.23 era and 9 wins. John Smoltz, who went 17-3 with a 2.32 era, has been lost to injury.
The Cardinals are led by slugger Mark McGwire, leading the National League in homeruns with 46. They also have Ron Gant, with 33 homeruns and 91 rbi's, followed by Brian Jordan with a .304 average, 24 homeruns, and 101 rbi's. Delonio DeShields, who leads the team in steals with 46, hurt himself on September 30th, losing speed and a .350 OBP. In short, the team hits .249 as a team and wins with power. Matt Morris leads the rotation with 17 wins and a 3.12 era, followe by Kent Bottenfield with a 3.86 era, making a nice 1-2 punch. They are without Andy and Alan Benes, losing 20 wins combined and a 3.52 era, and a 4.06 era respectfully.
Another close series, but the Cards don't have enough guys that will get on base, and Atlanta has excellent pitchers.
Prediction: Braves 3-1

Marlins look to Repeat Title
Our predictions were correct in the first round, as the Mariners and Indians faced off while the Marlins and Braves competed each other. The Marlins easily took down the Braves, 4 games to 1, shutting down the Braves in Game 5, 9-0. The Mariners on the other hand had a tough task, taking the series all the way to game 7. 2 of the games went to extra's which the Tribe and the Mariners shared a win in, and all of the games ended with a 3-run difference or less. The Florida Marlins and the Seattle Mariners will compete in the 1998 World Series.
The Florida Marlins are remebered last year as last year's champs, as they are looking to defend their title. Nobody thought that they would compete for the title, but they surprised the baseball world by winning the wild card and taking down the Indians in 7 games. Despite a fire sale in the off-season, they once again won the wild-card, and are looking for a second consecutive championship.
The Seattle Mariners are in the world series for the first time in franchise history, ever since they began play in 1977. Last season, they made it to the first round in the playoffs, but were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles, 3 games to 1. They also made it to the playoffs for the first time in 1995, with a September Surge, and forced a one-game playoff with the Angels, winning that game 9-1. They would go to the ALCS, but lose to the Cleveland Indians 4 games to 2.
This should be a great series, with a team looking to repeat, and a team looking for its first title!

Marlins Take Game 1
Early Jay Buhner Grand Slam Isn't Enough
Edgar Renteria of the Marlins blasts a homerun to tie the game
The Florida Marlins have taken Game 1 of the 1998 World Series by a final score of 11-6. A early 1-0 lead by the Marlins was taken away in the bottom of the first, thanks to a Jay Buhner grand slam to make it 4-1. But in the second inning, Randy Johnson of the Mariners completely fell apart, giving up 5 runs, 4 earned in the inning, and not escaping the jam. Reliever Bobby Ayala didn't help the cause, giving up 2 unearned runs.
The second inning started with a leadoff single from Kevin Millar, followed by a double from Bobby Bonilla. The Mariners then turned a double play, as Mark Kotsay flied out to center, and Millar got thrown out trying to tag up. With 2 outs, Luis Castillo was hit by a pitch, and Edgar Renteria tied the game, blasting a 3-run homerun. Cliff Floyd would follow up with a single, and Randy Johnson's night would end quickly. With Bobby Ayala coming in, Floyd stole second, and Gary Sheffield worked a walk. Third baseman, Russ Davis, misplayed a ball hit by Derrek Lee to extend the inning, and Charles Johnson took advantage of it by singling down the right field line, scoring 2 runs. The lineup would bat again and Kevin Millar grounded out to finally end the inning.
The Marlins would pick up 3 more runs in the 6th inning, with rbi's from Gary Sheffield, Derrek Lee, and Kevin Millar. The Mariners would pick up 2 more in the bottom half, as Russ Davis made up for his error by knocking home 2 runs with a double. The Marlins picked up a insurance run in the 8th and would run hold the Mariners to no runs in the final frames.

Moyer Shuts Down Marlins
Mariners tie Series
Jamie Moyer in his windup
Another sold-out crowd of 57,545 at the Kingdome left happy last night, as Jamie Moyer pitched a excellent game, shutting down the Marlins. He went 7 innings, gave up 1 run on 7 hits, striking out 5. His only mistake was a Derrek Lee homerun in the second inning. He was also given some good run support, and it started in the first inning, thanks to a Alex Rodriguez 2-RBI double. Mariners teammates agree that Moyer was on his game tonight.
"He kept the ball low in the zone, and it induced some ground-ball double plays." says catcher Rick Wilkins. "His junk was really moving tonight, and it really fooled those Marlins." "We really needed a good performance tonight, cause going down 2-0 and playing in Miami, it wouldn't really help our cause."
The Mariners also had a big inning, in the bottom of the 7th. With 2 outs, Edgar Martinez and Alex Rodriguez drew back-to-back walks. Ken Griffey would single up the middle, scoring Martinez. The next batter, Jay Buhner, cleared the bases with a 3-run homerun. The homerun was his second in as many games, and put the Mariners out of reach of the Marlins, with a 8-1 lead.
Charles Johnson of the Marlins blasted a 2-run homerun in the top of the 9th, but it wouldn't matter as the Mariners take game #2 and even up the series, going into Miami.

Lone Mariners Run Is Enough
Jeff Fassero outdeuls Tony Saunders
A-Rod after his Game-Winning double in the first inning
The Mariners proved that they have great pitching last night, as Jeff Fassero of the Mariners shut down the Marlins pitching 8 scoreless innings, outdueling Tony Saunders of the Marlins. He gave up 3 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 7. The Mariners only contributed a run to the victory, but is was enough coming from the first inning. With Rich Amaral on first base, Alex Rodriguez doubled him home, picking up the lone rbi for the night.
Tony Saunders pitched well too, but not as good as Fassero. He gave up 5 hits, 2 walks, but struck out 10, and gave up 1 run on the Rodriguez double. "Its dissapointing we couldn't help out Tony tonight." says Cliff Floyd, who went 0/4 with 3 strikeouts. "He pitched one of his best games of the year, and we couldn't help him out." "But you got to give credit to Fassero, he really had his stuff moving tonight. It was like facing Moyer again."
With the win, the Mariners take a 2-1 lead in the series with 2 left in Miami.

Alex Fernandez Stuns Mariners
Mariners strand 9 runners in Scoring Position
Derrek Lee's basehit, which scored Edgar Renteria in the first inning
On a night where they were shutout yesterday and appearing to lose composure in the series, Alex Fernandez came through for the Fish under pressure. Alex pitched 7 innings, giving up 6 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 5. He escaped some jams, including a bases-loaded jam in the third. Throughout the night, he ended up giving up only a run in the 4th inning, a Rich Wilkin Rbi-Single.
The Marlins hitters were agressive, scoring 3 runs in the first inning off pitcher Jim Bullinger. Luis Castillo set the tone for the team, as he led off the inning with a triple. Edgar Renteria followed up with a rbi single. Bullinger got the next 2 hitters, Cliff Floyd and Gary Sheiffeld, to ground out to third. Derrek Lee kept the inning going with a single to score Renteria, and Charles Johnson would double to score Lee. Bobby Bonilla popped up to first to end the inning, as they scored 3 runs on 4 hits. It was all the runs they would score for the night, as Bullinger beared down after the inning. He didn't give up a hit for the rest of the night, pitching 6 innings.
Those 3 runs were enough to win the game, as the Marlins tie the series 2-2.

Marlins are sunk by Johnson
Mariners are one win away
Randy Johnson was nearly unhittable, allowing just 2 hits
Remember when the Marlins came out in Game 1 and knocked out Randy Johnson early in the game? Well that seems like a distant memory now, as Randy Johnson proved why he should win the Cy Young Award for the season. Johnson pitched 8 2/3, striking out 7, walking 3 and giving up 2 hits on 1 run. Why he didn't pitch a complete game? His pitch count was at 126, and manager Lou Pinella wanted to save him in case of a Game 7.
After a scoreless first inning, Russ Davis led off the top of the second with a single. With a walk from Rick Wilkins, pitcher Randy Johnson bunted them over for the first out. Joey Cora grounded out to short for the second run, but Davis would score and the Mariners scored the first run. They would inflict more damage, as Jay Buhner crushed a homerun to center field, the deepest part of the park. It was his third homerun of the series, and the Mariners took a 3-0 lead. Edgar Martinez would ground out to end the top half of the second.
The Marlins would squeeze their only run in the 6th inning, on a Edgar Renteria single to centerfield, scoring Kevin Millar. The Mariners answered back in the 7th as Ken Griffey Jr. picked up a rbi-single, scoring Edgar Martinez from second.
J.J. Putz closed out the game by striking out Bobby Bonilla on 7 pitches to end the game. The Mariners now have a 3-2 lead in the series.

Lets go Seattle, bring home the championship.
Meet your Champions!
21 Year Wait Ends!
Ken Griffey Jr. gets mobbed by teammates
The long wait for a championship in Seattle has finally ended! The Mariners have joined baseball in 1977, and endured many losing seasons. They did not post a winning record until 1991, going 83-79. 1995 was a exciting season as they went to the playoffs for the first time. After 21 years since their existence, the WS trophy comes to Seattle!
The Mariners got off to a ugly start, allowing 5 runs in the first 4 innings to the Marlins, with rbi's from Johnson, Castillo, and Renteria. In the bottom half of the 4th, Paul Sorrento led off with a 2-out double. Russ Davis singled him home, and Rick Wilkins blasted a homerun to score 2 runs and put the Mariners within reach. But in the top of the 6th, Renteria picked up his second rbi with a single into center, scoring Mark Kotsay.
But the Mariners got that run back in their half, with a Jay Buhner solo homerun, his 4th of the series. They picked up another in the 7th, with a 2-out RBI-single from Ken Griffey Jr. At this point, they were down by only a run. In the bottom of the 8th, former D-Back Paul Assenmacher came to pitch for the Fish. Paul Sorrento led off with a triple. Then, Russ Davis, who struggled this season, became the hero, hitting a 2-Run homerun to give the Seattle Mariners a 7-6 lead, rallying from 5 runs down!
A perfect 9th inning came from J.J. Putz, getting Gary Sheffield to ground out to third to end the baseball year. Let the party begin in Seattle!
