    Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    Background Info:

Since 1946, this state has been the host of Spring Training baseball. A attempt to land a MLB team to the state was mounted by Elyse Doherty and Martin Stone, owners of the AAA Phoneix Firebirds, the affilate of the San Fransisco Giants. Stone approached Bill Bidwell, owner of the St. Louis Cardinals football team, and proposed to share a dome that could seat 70,000. Instead Bidwell shared a lease with ASU to use Sun Devil Stadium. In Fall of 1993, Jerry Colangelo owner of the Phoneix Suns, announced to assemble a group, Arizona Baseball Inc, to apply for a MLB team.

Colangelo's group was certain they would earn a team, so they held a name-the-team-contest, and the winner was 'Diamondbacks'. Plans soon followed for a retractable roof stadium named Bank One Ballpark. On March 9, 1995, Colangelo's group was awarded a franchise and a $130 million fee was paid to MLB.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

Hey guys, just wanted to thank you for reading this. My last dynasty I did, the Oregon Mauraders, was going pretty well but school and life got in the way. Now that it's summer, I should be able to put some time into this.

Major League Baseball Comes to Arizona!

For over 40 years, Arizona has been site of numerous spring training teams, and some minor league teams. After a long wait, Arizona will get its very own baseball team in the Phoneix area. Along with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Diamondbacks are a expansion franchise and MLB estimates that by 1998 the 2 teams will begin play.

    AL or NL?

As of right now, MLB currently has 28 MLB teams with 14 in the American League, and 14 in the National League. With Tampa Bay in the American League, owners of MLB want the Diamondbacks to play in the American League West to even the league out. However, Colangelo disagrees, "If we play in the National League West, we will have closer proximites with other teams. Think about it, you get some rivarlies with Arizona tourism to San Diego, our Firebirds team was a affilate with the San Fransisco Giants, and Dodgers, Giants and Padres were broadcasted in our area."

    Offical team name: Arizona Diamondbacks

After a series of discussions debating whether to call the team the Phoneix Diamondbacks or the Arizona Diamondacks, Colangelo decided to go with a state-wide fan base and choose Arizona. Fans in the Phoneix area are not pleased by this, and feel that the team will have a "small market" feel.

Diamondbacks select spring-training home, AAA affilate

Tucson, Arizona's second largest city has been chosen as the spring-training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks as well as their high minor-league affilate. Other deals have been struck such as Radio and Televison contracts in Flagstaff, and Las Vegas and other surrounding areas.

Diamondbacks select other towns for Minor-League affilates

The Arizona Diamondbacks have finished selecting towns for their Minor-League affilates. Mobile, has been placed in the AA Southern League. Visalia, has been placed in the A California League's North Divison. Missoula, has been placed in the Rookie League's Pioneer League, in the North Divison. The minor-league teams for the Arizona Diamondbacks are all set to begin in 1997.

Milwaukee Brewers volunteer to move to National League

After Bud Selig has offered the Kansas City Royals to move to the NL, who declined, the Milwaukee Brewers have volunteered to move from the AL Central to the NL Central. The move sets the Diamondbacks to play in the NL West, with 16 teams in the National League and 14 in the National League.

Diamondbacks to have first pick in MLB Expansion Draft

The MLB Expansion Draft is set to begin tommorow, and Arizona has won the coin-toss to select the first pick. Colangelo has not given info on what he wants in the draft. Sources say he is looking to build a offensive team.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    1998 EXPANSION DRAFT

With the first pick of the expansion draft, the Diamondbacks went with starting pitcher David Wells. David is a workhorse with a good curve and excellent command at the plate. Last season he picked up 16 wins, with a 4.21 era. He is espected to be the ace of the club, and will start opening day. In a phone interview with the press, David has said "I'm excited to pitch for a new team. There's a little pressure on me though because I'm starting a tradition that will contiune for many years."

During the rest of the draft, the club has chosen mostly veterans, and aging players. Rickey Henderson has been chosen in the 8th round, with 1,231 stolen bases. Tim Raines with 2,439 base hits. Orel Hershiser with 179 wins under his belt. The team average player's age on the team is around 30 years old, making them the oldest team in the National League. The payroll of the team has not been disclosed, but is said to be around $28 million.

Maybe you should've named them the Arizona Retirees...

Good luck with your first season!

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

POC: Haha! Thanks, we're gonna need it!

    1998 Arizona Diamondbacks

    CATCHERS

    Jeff Reed (.297, 17 HR, 47 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.6 M until FA 1999
    CAREER (.248, 45 HR, 231 RBI)

Reed had a career year last year, and has struggled with injuries during his career. If he stays healthy, he has a good eye and can call a ball game behind the plate.

    Jorge Fabregas (.280, 7 HR, 41 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $680 K until Arb. 1998
    CAREER (.267, 10 HR, 115 RBI)

Fabregas can pick up hits, but not consistently. He has a great arm behind the plate thats strong and quick, so he has some value.

    INFIELDERS

    (1B) David Segui (.307, 21 HR, 68 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $2.45 M until FA 2001
    CAREER (.279, 69 HR, 351 RBI)

Segui makes nice contact with the ball, and has gap-to-gap power. He also doesn't make many mistakes out in the field.

    (2B) Luis Sojo (.307, 2 HR, 25 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $650 K until FA 1998
    CAREER (.265, 27 HR, 185 RBI)

Sojo is a spray hitter, and can play average defense. This will be his first season as a starter.

(SS) Walt Weiss (.270, 4 HR, 38 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.8 M until FA 1999
    CAREER (.258, 23 HR, 312 RBI)

Weiss can get on base thanks to his ability to take pitches. Other then that, he can get some hits every now and then.

    (3B) Scott Livingstone (.164, 0 HR, 6 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $720 K until FA 1998
    CAREER (.287, 17 HR, 165 RBI)

Livingstone makes solid contact with the ball, and thats all I need from a third baseman.

(IF) Jeff Reboulet (.237, 4 HR, 27 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $360 K until FA 1998
    CAREER (.246, 13 HR, 127 RBI)

Reboulet is a lousy hitter, but plays the infield pretty well.

(IF) Shane Halter (.276, 2 HR, 10 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $190 K until Arb. 1999
    CAREEER (.276, 2 HR, 10 RBI)

Halter broke in the bigs last year at age 27 and did pretty good. Our scouts aren't too high on him though. Halter plays average defense and may struggle to make contact.

    OUTFIELDERS

(LF) Tim Raines (.321, 4 HR, 38 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.9 M until FA 1999
    CAREER (.296, 159 HR, 900 RBI)

Even though Raines is 38 years old, he'll still make excellent contact, steal bases and play great defense. We'll just to use him carefully and make sure we don't hurt him.

(CF) Orlando Palmerio (.216, 0 HR, 8 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $193 K until Arb. 1998
    CAREER (.253, 0 HR, 15 RBI)

Palmerio is really good at getting on base, with excellent plate discipline. He's a pretty good fielder too and reads the hit pretty well.

(RF) Pete Incaviglia (.246, 5 HR, 12 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $710 K until FA 1998
    CAREER (.247, 206 HR, 653 RBI)

Incaviglia is a strong athlete that hits tape-measure homeruns, but picks up a lot of strikeouts at the same time. Incaviglia will probably hit for a mediocre average and play atrocious defense.

(OF) Rickey Henderson (.183, 2 HR, 7 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.2 M until FA 1999
    CAREER (.286, 252 HR, 921 RBI)

Henderson is slowly starting the decline of his career, but will still get on base. He still has fast speed at age 39.

(OF) Jacob Brumfield (.207, 2 HR, 20 RBI) CONTRACT STATUS: $490 K until FA 1998
    CAREER (.259, 30 HR, 142 RBI)

Brumfield is a fast runner, and is gifted with a great arm. But, he sucks at hitting and will be placed on the bench.

    ROTATION

    David Wells (16-10, 4.21 ERA, 156 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $2.55 M until FA 1999
    CAREER (106-85, 4.02 ERA, 1078 K)

Wells is a workhorse with excellent command of the plate. He has a great curve and a 2-seamer with good movement.

    Orel Hershiser (14-6, 4.47 ERA, 107 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $2.1 M until FA 1999
    CAREER (179-123, 3.25 ERA, 1786 K)

Hershiser is aging, and won't pitch like he did in the 80's. He will still put for average numbers, and still has the ability to induce ground-balls.

    Charles Nagy (15-11, 4.28 ERA, 179 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $2 M until FA 2000
    CAREER (89-65, 3.93 ERA, 897 K)

Nagy is a workhorse with many tricks in his bag. He features 6 pitches, and his sinker and slurve have the best movement among the 6.

    Jose Rijo (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $1.25 M until FA 1998
    CAREER (111-87, 3.16 ERA, 1556 K)

Rijo has been hampered with injuries and has not pitched since 1995. But, he's fought back his way into the bigs. We're going to monitor him very carefully.

    Livan Hernandez (9-3, 3.18 ERA, 72 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $197 K until Arb. 1999
    CAREER (9-3, 3.08 ERA, 74 K)

Hernandez is one of our future aces. Hernandez features a 95 mph fastball but it needs more movement.

    BULLPEN

    Darren Dreifort (5-2, 2.86 ERA, 63 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $550 K until Arb. 1998
    CAREER (6-11, 4.12 ERA, 109 K)

Dreifort is our mop-up man, and is here in case Rijo struggles. Dreifort has good velocity on his pitches, and picks up strikeouts.

    Gil Heredia (2-5, 5.89 ERA, 43 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $510 K until Arb. 1998
    CAREER (19-21, 4.34 ERA, 254 K)

Heredia has nice command, but throws too soft. He gives up too many hits and his only good pitch is his fastball.

    Rheal Cormier (0-1, 33.75 ERA, 0 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $318 K until FA 1999
    CAREER (38-39, 4.18 ERA, 425 K)

Cormier was a starter and struggled, so he's been moved to the 'pen. He has pretty average stuff and relies on his defense.

    Tony Castillo (4-4, 4.91 ERA, 42 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $640 K until FA 1998
    CAREER (27-21, 3.71 ERA, 319 K)

Castillo has health issues and has average command of the plate. It's a good thing he's a lefty or he wouldn't have a spot on our team.

    Alan Embree (3-1, 2.54 ERA, 45 K) CONTRACT STATUS: $300 K until Arb. 1998
    CAREER (7-6, 4.74 ERA, 113 K)

Embree has a decent fastball and doesn't throw it consistently for strikes.

    Paul Assenmacher (5-0, 2.94 ERA, 53 K)
    CAREER (57-38, 3.35 ERA, 735 K)

Assenmacher is the best pitcher in our 'pen. He has a nice curve with average movement, and has some experience as a closer with 53 saves.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    Diamondbacks lose Franchise Opener
Raul Mondesi homerun in 6th inning blows game open

A sold-out crows of 48,500 attended the Bob for the Diamondbacks' first game ever. Many of the fans were there to follow the team, some just wanted to be there and part of history, and some were Dodger fans. A opening day ceremony was held announcing the rosters for the opposing teams. Standing ovations were held for Tim Raines, and Rickey Henderson. After the national anthem was played, the game was underway.

The Diamondbacks would start their season off well, as David Wells pitched a scoreless inning. Walt Weiss became the first player to get a hit for the Diamondbacks, a single into centerfield. Tim Raines would walk with 1 out, and David Segui drove them home with a double. The Dodgers would cut the lead in half, scoring on a fielding error by third basemen Scott Livingstone.

Nothing would happen in the third inning, and in the fourth, Raul Mondesi led off with a double and 2 outs later Todd Zeile singled him home, tying the game.

In the 5th inning, Jose Vizcaino led off with a triple. Hideo Nomo, the pitcher, was used for a suicide squeeze and struck out, and Vizcaino was caught stealing. With 2 outs, Roger Cedeno drew a walk, and stole second base. Eric Young then drew a walk putting runners on first and second. Raul Mondesi came up and cleared the bases, hitting a homerun driving in 3 runs. The homerun was the first at the Bob.

The Dodgers would add another run in the 9th inning, on a pinch-hit Thomas Howard homerun.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    April Review

    Month Record: 11-11
    Overall Record: 11-11
    Runs Scored: 94
    Runs Allowed: 122
    Team Batting: .245
    Team Pitching: 5.16

    The Story of April

We started off the month slowly, but picked up some nice victories once we took off. Injuries plagued us this month, as players were placed on the 15-day DL, but we lost a major blow in our closer, Paul Assenmacher for 3 months. Our pitching overall has had its ups and downs, and our hitting has room to improve. For a expansion club, .500 is a good way to start the season so we'll take this good month anyday.

    Events of April

4-11: Diamondbacks win their first game over the San Diego Padres, 2-1. Livan Hernandez gives up just 1 run in 7 innings. His only mistake was a homerun given up to Chris Gomez in the second inning.

4-15: The Diamondbacks rally from a 6-1 defict in the 9th inning and add 6 runs to win the game, 7-6 over the Pittsburgh Pirates! Darren Dreifort pitched 4 solid innings in relief.

4-18: The Diamondbacks get killed over the Rockies, 19-2. A 10-run outburst in the 8th inning manufactured the runs. Rheal Cormier, Darren Dreifort and Tony Castillo all pitched in the 8th inning.

4-26: Charles Nagy pitches 7 solid innings giving up no runs, but the Diamondbacks gave him no run support! This game went to extra innings and in the 10th, Scott Livingstone drove home the winning run.

    Injuries

4-7: Jeff Reed strains his knee for 2 weeks. Steve Decker is promoted from Tacoma and Jorge Fabregas takes the starting role.

4-7: Luis Sojo sprains his knee for 2 weeks. Billy Ripken is promoted and Reboulet, Ripken, and Halter split time starting.

4-21: Tim Raines dislocates his shoulder, and misses 2 weeks. Billy Ripken, who was sent down afer Sojo came back, is promoted again. Rickey Henderson and Jim Eisenrich split time starting.

4-25: Jorge Fabregas broke his hand and will miss 2 weeks. Steve Decker is re-promoted and assumes the backup role.

4-30: Paul Assenmacher broke his ankle and will miss 3 weeks. Cory Lidle is promoted from AA Mobile, and will take the long-role man. Alan Embree is the new closer.

    NL West Standings

    1. Los Angeles Dodgers (12-8)
    2. San Diego Padres (13-9)
    3. Arizona Diamondbacks (11-11)
    4. San Fransisco Giants (10-12)
    5. Colorado Rockies (8-12)

    Overall Record: 23-29

    The Story of May

We were off to a hot start, winning the first 4 games of May. We even managed to climb up to first place for a day! For the next week we fell to our usual ways, playing .500 ball, then in the final 2 weeks, we went a horrible 3-11. During the month, we signed a reliever, Jamie Walker. He wanted a 2 year deal, which we gave him. We offered him $290 K a year, and accepted the offer. He is going to be used in case of a injury, and he is in Tuscon. Now that 2 months of the season is over, we have a general feel for the team. What we need to aquire are some infielders who can hit, and any pitchers. With the amatuer draft coming up, it gives us a chance to draft some of those guys.

Alan Embree was a highlight of the month, filling the position as our new closer. He has not dissapointed, coverting 7 saves out of 7 chances. He is eligible for arbitration, but he is not intrested in negotating right now. Asked how he feels as a closer, "I like coming in. My adrenaline really pumps up when I race out of the bullpen in a tight situation." For those who don't know, his entrance theme from the 'pen is 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' by Metallica.

Jacob Brumfield got some playing time this month, and started off well and got to stay in the lineup. He had a 13 game hitting streak which ended on May 23. Overall this month, his average improved from .000 on May 1 to .289. He also showed off his speed on the basepaths, stealing 6 bases without getting caught, leading the team.

    Events of May

5-1: Charles Nagy strikeouts 10 Cardinal batters, and nearly pitches a complete game, pitching 8 2/3 innings. Alan Embree closes it out for his first save, as the D'Backs win this squeaker 1-0.

5-4: David Wells allows just 5 baserunners, giving up 2 runs, (1 earned), pitching a complete game. The win ties the Dodgers for first place in the NL West Divison.

5-24: In Interleague play in Texas, young Livan Hernandez pitches 5 innings giving up 5 walks and 4 hits escaping 3 jams. He allowed no runs and struck out 7, as the D'Backs win 4-0 to end a 5-game losing streak.

5-31: The D'Backs can't figure out Curt Schilling as they only knock 3 hits off him, and commit 3 errors losing 6-1 over the Philadelphia Phillies.

    Contracts

5-19: Relief Pitcher Jamie Walker is signed for 2 years at $290,000 per year

    Injuries

5-16: Infielder Jeff Reboulet has Ankle Fracture and will miss 2 weeks. Billy Ripken is promoted once again to take his spot.

If you give him a no-trade clause like he had in real life at the time, that would never happen, but that's an extra step that only the most hardcore of Baseball Mogul players implement into their playing.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

NattyOs8 & Bingle: I didn't end up implementing the no-trade clause for players, but Cal Ripken didn't get chosen and he is still a Baltimore Oriole

    1998 MLB Amatuer Draft

    Top Players in the Draft:

1B Albert Pujols: Pujols absoultely tears pitchers apart, and hit .647 in his Senior Year at High School. He also hit 26 homeruns in 116 at-bats. Oh and his on-base percentage? .741.
SP Daisuke Matsuzaka: Born in Japan, traveled to the US at age 13. Matsuzaka features a great fastball and a hard slider, and strikes out hitters with these pitches. Very close to big-league material.
LF Matt Holliday: Holliday hits the ball well, and could be a all-star outfielder in a couple of years. Has no history of injuries, a very healthy athlete. Hit double-digit homeruns each year in High School Ball.

    Round 1 Selection:

When you're picking 29th in the draft, you won't be able to grab the best player out there. Albert Pujols was the 6th overall pick, surprisingly by the St.Louis Cardinals. Experts thought he would have been the first overall pick, but the Oakland A's selected starter Joe Blanton. Daisuke Matsuzaka was chosen 2nd in the draft by Kansas City, and Matt Holliday was selected 17th by the Rockies. We checked out what our system needed, which was some good infielders. We had 1 second baseman, Edwin Diaz. At 23 and in the Rookie System, he's gonna be a bust. We chose Dan Uggla from Louisville.

    Round 2 Selection:

In this round, I decided we could use a outfielder. We have 2 aging outfielders and a mediocre centerfielder. Checking our farm system, we have only 3 outfielders, so we decided to choose a outfielder. 2 outfielders caught my eye. Fred Lewis, a left fielder from Hattiesburg Mississippi, or Shane Victorino, a center fielder from Hawaii. We already have left-fielder Jack Cust, a slugging homerun hitter. But we have center-fielder Gabe Kapler, a decent contact hitter. We went with Shane Victorino, a speedy athlete who plays gold-glove defense.

    Round 3 Selection:

Fred Lewis happened to be undrafted this round, which could mean that he's not as great as our scouts think. It could be a good thing we chose Victorino over Lewis. Anyways, we took a look at our infielders again this round. Our current third baseman Scott Livingstone, is pretty miserable as a starter. We have Aaron Boone at AAA who could start next year, but he's not exactly projected to be a all-star we're looking for. Checking the third basemen available, one caught my eye. Chad Tracy, from Charlotte North Carolina was selected.

    Round 4 Selection:

You can never have enough pitchers on a team, and we didn't pick one yet so we looked for a pitcher. There wasn't a lot of pitching talent left, so we started thinking about looking for a hitter, but then we found a pitcher. He's not great, maybe has the potential to be a #5 starter. Ben Hardwick from Columbus, Nebraska was selected.

    Round 5 Selection:

At this point in the draft, we just wanted to find anyone who had a decent shot of making the majors. We decided to look for another pitcher, this time a reliever. We found one, and he has a lot of junk pitches. If he can control them and try to move them around more, he could be a decent reliever. With our 5th pick, we went with Troy Cate from Fallbrook, California.

    Round 6 Selection:

Our system only has 2 catchers, which caught my surprise, so I looked for any catchers who were decent. There weren't very many to choose from, so it was kind of a easy choice. This catcher will probably be a backup, but can play good defense behind the plate. With our 6th pick, we chose Shawn Riggins from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    6-11-98
    Diamondbacks aquire Dave Hansen

The Diamondbacks announced they have traded 2 prospects, Second Baseman Edwin Diaz, and Third Baseman Andy Green. They were traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Third Baseman Dave Hansen. Hansen is a career .270 hitter with 15 homeruns and 110 rbi's. He has played most of his career with the Dodgers, as a bench role-player. Hansen was hitting .333 off the bench with 5 doubles in 45 at-bats this season, with a OBP of .400. "The prospects were traded because of our new draftees, Dan Uggla and Chad Tracy." "We wanted to be able to give the new guys some more at-bats, and this trade will help benefit them." says Jerry Colangelo.

It is unsure whether Hansen will take over for Scott Livingstone at third base. Livingstone is currently hitting .220 with on OBP of .281, so it would be likely Hansen will be getting more at-bats. With the arrival of Dave Hansen, Shane Halter has been sent down to Tacoma, as Halter hit just .150 as a backup. Both Livingstone and Hansen are in their final year of their contract.

    Re: Arizona Diamondbacks: 1998 Expansion!

    June Review

    Month Record: 11-15
    Overall Record: 34-44
    Runs Scored: 311
    Runs Allowed: 382
    Team Batting: .247
    Team Pitching: 4.44

    The Story Of June

This was another average month, as we went through another losing record. The Amateur draft was held this month, and we snagged Dan Uggla, Shane Victorino, and Chad Tracy. We completed our first trade in franchise history, sending over 2 propsects for Dave Hansen. Dave Hansen and Scott Livingstone have been competing for the starting position, and even since the trade, Livingstone increased his average above .250. Injuries also plagued us this month, starting with David Wells and his sprained back for 2 weeks. Cory Lidle and Darren Dreifort made starts for him, and it worked out pretty well. Some major injuries happened though, as we lost Rheal Cormier for the season with a broken fibula. The next day we lost catcher Jeff Reed for the season with elbow tendonitis.

Tim Raines set 2 milestones this month, stealing his 800th base on June 7, 1998 and scoring his 1,500th run 1 week later, on June 14th. Tim is 2nd on the stolen base list on 803, trailing teammate Rickey Henderson by a distant 435. Tim ranks 3rd on the runs scored list with 1514, behind Paul Molitor and again, teammate Rickey Henderson. "I'm not retiring until I achieve 1,000 steals." says Raines "It's been my goal since I was a kid to achieve something big, and 1,000 is certainly a milestone."

    Events Of June

6-6: D'Backs win in 10 innings, 4-2 over the Giants. RBI's in the 10th came from Rickey Henderson and Tim Raines.

6-9: Livan Hernandez pitches 9 shutout innings, but we fail to score any runs too. The game ends up going to 15 innings, and we lose 3-1.

6-11: Another game goes to extra innings, going into the bottom of the 10th, tied at 2 with 2 outs, Jim Eisenrich comes off the bench and hits a homerun!

6-13: D'Backs pull out another dramatic win over the Astros, as Pete Incaviglia hit a weak grounder to 3rd in the bottom of the 9th and the third baseman bobbled it, bringing home the winning run!

6-16: Darren Dreifort makes his first start and pitches 4 and 2/3, giving up 5 hits and 1 run in Detroit as the D'Backs win 7-2.

6-21: Cory Lidle makes his first start and pitches 3 and 1/3, giving up 9 hits, 3 runs while walking 1 as the D'Backs win in Oakland 4-3.

6-26: D'Backs win 8-5 over the best team in the baseball, the Mariners. Darren Dreifort, a pitcher, hits his first homerun!

    Injuries

6-13: David Wells sprains his back and will miss 2 weeks. Darren Dreifort and Cory Lidle made starts for him, and Jamie Walker was called up.

6-26: Rheal Cormier broke his fibula, and will miss the rest of the season. David Wells is off the DL, so Walker is still with Arizona.

6-27: Jeff Reed suffers severe elbow tendonitis and will miss the rest of the season. Steve Decker is promoted from Tacoma, and Jorge Fabregas is the starter.
