Rumor Mill
Rumors show that the Rockies General Manager is looking to trade 1B prospect Desi Wilson for a Starting Pitcher. However, there has been very few offers, according to an inside source that wishes to remain anonymous. The Rockies already have George Brett and Todd Helton at the first base position, with Helton penciled in for years to come. While, the Rockies pitcher's have been aboslutely atrocious this year.

April 5th- It was about time our offense broke out of their slump, 1 run in the last 2 games, and they did that big time; scoring runs in all but 2 innings, including a 3-run 3rd and a 5-run 5th. Jim Thome was the big horse of the hitters today going 3-4 and hitting 3 Home Runs. Pitcher Billy Krueger went all 9 innings, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits. Overall, a very good day for our team and a nice way to christen in the brand new Mile High Stadium (Which had an attendance of 50,699). (Won 12-3)

April 6th- This game started out looking like it would be a blowout, but quickly turned it a thriller. Matt Clement started for the Padres and dominated the first 7 innings when he allowed 0 hits and walked 2. In the 8th we were able to get for Clement for 4 runs, but we left runners on the corners as Todd Helton struck out to end the inning. That was just 1 run short as John Thomson and 2 relievers combined to "hold" the Padres to 5 runs. (Loss 5-4)

April 7th- We won our first series of the year! All it took was Nolan Ryan to go 7 innings, allow 2 runs (1 earned), and strikeout 10. Of course we had to score a run, "You can't win a 0-0 game", so Jim Thome decided that he'd hit a 2-run HR (as part of a 3-run 6th) to give us those runs and help us to the victory. The bullpen took over after Ryan came out and allowed 1 Hit and 0 Runs in 2 inning worth of work. (Won 4-2)

What I found out: That in order for us to make the playoffs we need our bullpen to keep pitching like this, Thome to keep hitting like this, George Brett needs to get and stay healthy, and we need just 1 other DOMINANT Pitcher. With another pitcher we could be a good club this year.

April 9th- It seems that either our bullpen does well and our hitters fail or vice versa. Today it was that both our bullpen and hitters failed. We scored 2 runs in the 7th inning thanks to 2-bases loaded walks; however Javy Lopez grounded out with the bases loaded to end the inning. That inning brought us within 1 and gave us a good shot at winning the game. However we couldn't capitalize in the 8th and then, in the top of the 9th, Doug Jones gave up a 2-run Home Run to Dave Martinez which extended their lead to 3. Of course, in the bottom of the 9th we load the bases and score 1-run, but we couldn't score anymore. (Loss 5-3)

April 10th- When you give up 11 runs in the span of 2 innings then you don't deserve to win the game; that's what we did. We gave up 5 runs in the 4th and 6 in the 5th to give the Giants a good cushion. It looked like we might actually rally to come back when we scored 3 runs in the bottom half of the 4th, but we only scored 1 run after that. It was not a good outing for Bill Krueger who was trying to repeat his Complete Game. (Loss 16-6)

April 11th- We salvage a game in this series as Jon Lieber pitches an absolute GEM. Lieber goes 7 innings, allowing 2 hits, and no runs. We were able to score 6 runs to support Lieber despite striking out 13 times. As long as we cut down on the strikeouts I could live with this performance every game. A good outing by our starter, good offense, no errors, and good 2-3 innings from the bullpen to close it out. (Won 6-0)

What I found out: I found out that the only reliable pitcher we seem to have is Nolan Ryan. Now granted he is 44 years old and will have 3 years left at the very most. Luckily it seems like we have some good young pitchers that are taking their licks, but will hopefully grow into their own enough to lift this franchise to the playoffs in the near future. If not, we should be able to make a run at the playoffs with some good pitching and some luck.

April 12th- It is nice to see that we finally won back-to-back games and we won a game that was a 1-run game, our first 1-run victory since opening day. All it took for us to win was a 3-run, wild, 9th inning comeback. We took the lead, 6-5, in the 9th when Spike Owen hit a 2-run HR. Owen had only hit 40 career HR in his 11 seasons, and his first one this year could not have come at a better time. However, Doug Jones gave up a run in the 9th to force this game into extras. We scored a run in the 10th when we got doubles from Randy Bush and George Brett, which proved to be the winning run as Larry Anderson came in to shut the door in a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th. April 13th- As soon as we win a 1-run game, I jinx us and we lose painfully. This game was painful because the Braves scored 5 runs in the last 2 innings (Compared to us scoring 1), which helped them make up a 3-run deficit. Bruce Ruffin couldn't hold the Braves in the 9th, and wasn't even close in doing so. He gave up a lead-off double and then a walk. Duane Ward came in, struck out 1, and then gave up the game-winning single to Ryan Klesko. (Loss 8-7)

April 14th- It’s never a good thing when your starting pitcher is at 62 pitches through 2 innings, especially when he isn't normally an inning-eater. It's not good when you are down 10-1 through half the game or when your offense can only manage 4 hits. To put it in perspective they had more RUNS in ONE INNING (5) than we had HITS in the WHOLE GAME (4); just an ugly way to end the series. Hopefully we can turn this around and use this as motivation to whoop the Cincinnati Reds. (Loss 10-1)

Rockies' General Manager Makes Major Move
April 17, 1993
(Trachsel looks SOO happy to be coming to Colorado)
Denver-- The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have agreed to a trade with the Chicago Cubs. Rumors released earlier this week had some speculation that the Rockies were looking to deal one of their first base prospects, Desi Wilson. Those rumors came to fruition today when the Rockies announced that they had traded Wilson and Andujar Cedeno to the Cubbies for Steve Trachsel.
Wilson, a 23-year old first baseman, was in A ball with the Rockies; he was hitting .364/.391/.477/.868. Wilson, however, was stuck behind George Brett and fellow prospect Todd Helton at first base. The Rockies also traded 23-year old Shortstop Andujar Cedeno, who was in AA with the Rockies. In AA Cedeno was hitting .304/.365/.739/1.014, which included 4 2B, 2 3B, and 4 HR. Those stats were before he suffered a Fractured Foot, which will sideline him for 12 more days. Cedeno was battling with 19-year old prospect Nefi Perez to be the club's future shortstop. Both were at about the same stage in development and, apparently, the club likes Perez better.
Steve Trachsel, also out 12 days with a Fractured Foot, had made 1 start for both the AA team and the Chicago Cubs. Despite having a 5.14 ERA after his 1 start he held hitters to a .160 average which gives the Rockies staff hope that he can continue his growth in the majors this year, not down in AAA Colorado Springs. It looks like Trachsel will need some more seasoning in AA and AAA, but could see a call-up later this year if he is needed because of injuries or poor performance. Of course Trachsel will be up with the major league club for the September call-ups, and they hope he will be a vital part of their rotation for years to come.
To Colorado:
Steve Trachsel (22 y/o RHP) [72/93] (MLB)
To Chicago:
Desi Wilson (23 y/o 1B) [55/85] (A)
Andujar Cedeno (23 y/o SS) [67/87] (AA)

April 15th- We didn't start off this series to hot. Our bats seemed to have a Brownout again Tom Browning while the Reds' bats stayed red hot. The Reds' scoring repeated a pattern of 1-2-0, thanks to 2 unearned runs charged against Jon Lieber. Our bullpen (John Candelaria) didn't do so hot either, allowing 3 ER in 2 innings while giving up a HR. One positive that came out of this game was that we didn't use up a bunch of our bullpen, which desperately needed a rest. (Loss 9-2)

April 16th- Pitcher-mismanagement caused us to have to use Jim Bullinger (Normally a LR/Spot Starter) and the results weren't pretty. He didn't do that bad (3 Earned in 3.2 IP), but it was the fact that he only went 3.2 innings that really screwed our bullpen up. Our hitters couldn't seem to come up with the big base hit throughout the game, probably a cause of our top 3 hitters going 0-13, 2 BB, and 1 strikeout; couple that with 2 errors and it is not a goo combo, especially when you are trying to support a pitcher who isn't use to being a starter. This brings our losing streak to 4 and I am thinking about changing up the lineup, but it would make our first 4 hitters all Left-Handed. (Loss 7-4)
WP- Chris Hammond (1-1): 5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 3 ER, K, 3.38 ERA.

April 17th- Whenever we need to stop a streak we just send Nolan Ryan to the hill. He came out there, pitching like the Hall-Of-Famer he is, and put an end to our record 4-game losing streak. Now it wasn't pretty, but it helps when you induce 2 ground balls and get 7 runs of support. It also helps when Jim Thome hits 2 HR and then Jim Edmonds tacks one on for extra support. Javy Lopez had 2 RBI this game and improved his batting average to .179.
WP- Nolan Ryan (3-0): 5.1 IP, 5 H, 5 BB, ER, 6 K, 3.86 ERA.

April 18th- It must be a sign of the apocalypse our pitching actually prevented the other team from scoring, we didn't have to use a reliever, and we actually won 2 straight games. Coincidentally the last time we won 2 straight games is when Jon Lieber and 2 relievers combined to throw a shutout. Both times we have recorded a shutout we have only allowed 4 hits, kinda spooky ain't it? For a little bit though it didn't seem like we were going to give John Thomson enough run support. The game was tied at 0 until Javy Lopez walked to the plate with bases loaded and 0 down in the 8th. A single, sacrifice RBI groundout, and a successful suicide squeeze play gave us a 3-0 lead that we would never relinquish. Thomson dominated the whole game and only needed 95 pitches to get through all 9 innings. (Won 3-0)
WP- John Thomson (1-1): 9 IP, 4 H, BB, 5 K, 2.14 ERA.
LP- John Smiley (1-3): 7 IP, 7 H, 6 BB, 3 ER, 3 K, 6.23 ERA.

What I found out: It seems like whenever our pitching hits a hot streak the WHOLE staff gets red hot. However, that burst is short lived as they always seem to fall back to Earth fairly quickly. Also, Jim Thome will miss the series against San Francisco (3 games) due to a Sore Tricep. George Brett will slide over to 3rd for those 3 games and then Todd Helton will replace Brett at first; with Kevin McReynolds (5 HR) moving up to the #4 hole.

April 19th- It didn't look good for us as we went back and forth the first couple of innings until the Giants scored a run in the 6th and it looked like our bullpen was gonna blow ANOTHER game; however, Kevin McReynolds and Jim Edmonds had other ideas. 2 singles put runners on the corners in the 8th and then Jim Edmonds tied the game with a sac fly. After a walk to George Brett, Kevin McReynolds blasted a ball to right-center for a 3-run, go-ahead, HR; the HR gave us a 6-3 lead. Doug Jones came in to try and close the game out and, after striking out the lead-off man, gave up a Pinch-Hit triple. Jones stranded the runner on third by getting a pop out and a ground out to give us a win, and extended our winning streak to 3 games. (Won 6-3)

April 20th- The Giants started the game off with 3 runs in the first and we immediately answered the call with 3 runs of our own in the bottom half of the inning. We followed that up with 2 runs in the 2nd and a run in the 5th to give ourselves a comfortable 6-3 lead. However, the Giants responded by scoring 2 runs in the 6th and 7th innings, then they tacked on an insurance run in the 8th to put them up by 2. However, out comeback sticks were out again as we scored 3 runs in the 8th inning for the SECOND straight game. A single, walk, single combination led to our first run and was followed by a Kevin McReynolds sac fly (Which scored Edmonds who hit LAST NIGHT'S sac fly). Another walk was followed by a Javy Lopez single which game us a 9-8 lead. Things got a little interesting in the 9th as the Giants put runners on 2nd and 3rd, thanks to a balk by Doug Jones, but he was able to strike out Todd Benzinger to end the game and give us our 4th straight win.(Won 9-8)
WP- Duane Ward (1-0): 1 IP, H, 2 BB, 2 K, 1.13 ERA.
LP- Mike Jackson (1-1): 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 ER, 9.00 ERA.

April 21st- Holy Crap, we have won 5 STRAIGHT GAMES!! We did so by scoring early and often; we scored a run in the 1st and 5th, 3 runs in the 3rd and 4th, and 2 runs in the 8th inning for good measure. Jim Edmonds had a huge game today as he went 2-4 with 2 runs, a HR, and 4 RBI. The game got interesting once we turned it over to the bullpen, but they were able to hold down the 6-run lead to secure our 5th straight victory. (Won 10-6)

What I found out: I figured out that this team is really unpredictable and that our starting first baseman of the future, Todd Helton, may need some more time down in AAA so I demoted him after this series. Also, John Thomson will miss 13 more days after he pulled his groin on April 19th. I have no idea who we are going to call-up, or what we are going to do, for his next start.

April 23rd- Not a good time for Nolan Ryan to decide that he wanted to have a bad game. In only 2.2 innings he gave up 11 runs, giving up 9 runs in the 3rd inning. Darryl Strawberry attributed for 5 of the runs in the game and Andy Van Slyke had 3 doubles, giving Orel Hershiser more than enough run support. The only blemish on his record was a solo Home Run by Jim Thome in the 9th inning. Coincidentally we have faced Orel Hershiser twice (1-1) and both times we sent Nolan Ryan to the mound. (Loss 14-1)

We were able to get our 2 runs in the top of the 9th, and we loaded the bases, to make it seem like we would actually try to make a comeback, but we couldn't and lost our 2nd straight. (Loss 5-2)

April 25th- Well, it seems like our 5-game winning streak was to make up for us being swept by the Dodgers during this series. It was a semi-close game until the Dodgers scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th, but it wouldn't have mattered as our bats went dead again (Besides for Jim Thome). April 26th- Another late rally that fell short and another game "blown" by the bullpen. While the loss actually goes to Charlie Hough, the starter, Duane Ward gave up a run in the top of the 8th that gave the Astros the victory. We came back to score 2 in the bottom half of the 8th, but because of that run Ward gave up the half inning before, we lost. I really do not know what I am going to do with Hough, every game he gives up at least 3 runs and can't go past the 5th inning due to his low endurance (69) and the number of pitches he throws in a game (87.2). This puts in a 4-game losing streak, tied for the longest of the year. (Loss 5-4)
WP- Shane Reynolds (1-0): 7 IP, 7 H, 2 BB, 2 ER, 3 K, 3.52 ERA.
LP- Charlie Hough (1-4): 5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 6.65 ERA.
SV- Billy Wagner (6): 1 IP, 1 H, K, 3.38 ERA.
HR- None
April 27th- When your team is on a 4-game losing streak and the opposing team scores 3 runs in the first inning your thoughts immediately go to "Oh crap, here we go again". However, we were slowly able to peck away at their lead thanks to good pitching and a 4-run 6th inning that gave us the lead. I was really impressed with the way the team played today as everyone but Spike Owen had a hit and 2/3rds of the team had 2 hits. That was coupled with 6 strong innings from Jim Bullinger, who was filling in for the injured Jon Thomson. (Won 7-5)
WP- Jim Bullinger (1-1): 6 IP, 4 H, 4 BB, HR, 5 R (3 ER), 9.24 ERA.
LP- Doug Drabek (1-4): 5.2 IP, 8 H, BB, HR, 6 R (4 ER), 2 K, 4.50 ERA.
SV- Doug Jones (5): 1 IP, K, 3.72 ERA.
HR- Luis Gonzalez (4); Randy Bush (3).
April 28th- Wowza, that is all I can say about this game. Both pitchers did amazing today, but we were able to score the only run of the game in the 7th when Jim Thome hit a solo HR. Nolan Ryan and Pete Harnisch were both on the top of their games allowing 9 hits in their combined 14 innings Pitched while striking out 14. Our bullpen was able to control the 'Stros lineup for the last 4 innings only allowing 1 hit and giving up a walk. It was the first ever 1-0 game in the history of the Colorado Rockies franchise. (Won 1-0)
WP- Larry Andersen (1-0): 1.1 IP, BB, 2 K, 9.28 ERA.
LP- Pete Harnisch (1-2): 8 IP, 4 H, BB, HR, ER, 5 K, 3.00 ERA.
SV- Doug Jones (6): 1 IP, 3.38 ERA.
HR- None; Jim Thome (11).
What I found out: Basically the same that I have known the whole year, our team is very streaky. Also, we found out that Jon Lieber will miss 5 days due to a Pulled Quadriceps. Newly acquired Steve Trachsel is off the DL just in time to pick up his spot; when Lieber comes back he could replace Hough if his next start doesn't go well.

April 29-May 2, 1993

April 29th- Steve Trachsel may have to turn that frown upside down if his Colorado years continue to follow this trend. We gave him 3 runs in the 1st (Thanks to an Edmonds' HR) and 5 runs in the 2nd (Thanks to a bases-clearing double by George Brett and a Thome HR). Edmonds and Thome followed their 1st inning blasts with Home runs in the 4th. Trachsel spread out 10 hits by the Cubbies and only allowed them 3 runs (2 runs on solo HRs from Sandberg and Sosa) and looked good in his first Rockies' start. (Won 11-3)
WP- Steve Trachsel (1-1): 9 IP, 10 H, 4 BB, 2 HR, 3 ER, 5 K, 3.94 ERA.
LP- Greg Hibbard (2-2): 1.2 IP, 7 H, 2 BB, 2 HR, 8 ER, K, 5.12 ERA.
SV- None
HR- Ryne Sandberg (7), Sammy Sosa (11); Jim Edmonds 2 (4, 5), Jim Thome 2 (12, 13).
April 30th- We extended our winning streak to 4 games with a win today, thanks to 2 big innings. We scored 4 runs in the 3 and then we scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take the lead. It didn't come easy as the Cubs opened the game by scoring 3 runs in the top half of the 1st and then 1 more in the 2nd to jump to an early 4-0 lead. Our pitching settled down and Jim Thome got warmed up to give us the comeback win. (Won 6-8)
WP- Doug Jones (1-0): 1.1 IP, 2 H, ER, K, 3.75 ERA.
LP- Chuck McElroy (0-1): 1 IP, 4 H, HR, 3 ER, 10.00 ERA.
SV- None
HR- Sammy Sosa (12); Jim Thome 2 (14, 15).
May 1st- Well at least I can't blame the end of the winning streak on 1 group of players. Today, we just got out played and I can't blame anyone. The pitching (Charlie Hough) did give up 2 HR in the 5.2 innings he pitched, but it didn't matter as Mike Morgan absolutely shut down our offense in the 7 innings he pitched. (Loss 5-1)
WP- Mike Morgan (4-1): 7 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, HR, ER, 6 K, 3.12 ERA.
LP- Charlie Hough (1-5): 5.2 IP, 9 H, 2 BB, 2 HR, 5 ER, 5 K, 6.91 ERA.
SV- None
HR- Rick Wilkins (3), Mark Grace (5); Jim Thome (16).
May 2nd- This loss I CAN blame on somebody. Our bullpen completely blew this game as they gave up 4 runs in the 8th and the winning run in the 10th. That 4 run 8th inning that they gave up was the next half inning after we scored 4 runs in the 7th to take the lead. Now some people might say that the offense is to blame for the loss, but there is no reason we should be up by 4 runs and then blow the game that quickly. A once promising series (Up 2-0) ends up being a split series. (Loss 6-5 in 10 innings)
WP- Randy Myers (1-0): 2 IP, H, 2 BB, 2 K, 2.45 ERA.
LP- Duane Ward (1-1): 2 IP, 2 H, BB, ER, K, 2.03 ERA.
SV- Dan Plesac (6): 1 IP, BB, 3 K, 1.93 ERA.
HR- Rick Wilkins (4), Steve Buechele (3); Kevin McReynolds (8).
What I found out: Jim Thome is a beast and our pitching sucks.
