    SI's 2009 Baseball PVR Rankings

I ranked the position players in the major leagues from 1 (the best) to 425 and the pitchers from 1 to 350, based on projections of their statistical production this season. The categories considered for position players were batting average, home runs, RBIs and stolen bases; for pitchers the categories were wins, saves, ERA and WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched). We also took into account each player's career stats as well as his role on his team, his prospects for improving or declining, and his injury history and physical condition. Using these criteria, SI determined each player's value ranking, or PVR, which appears next to his name in his team's projected roster in the scouting reports.

I took a quick glance, but how are Melvin Mora and Chone Figgins higher on the third base list than Adrian Beltre, Edwin Encarnacion, Ryan Zimmerman, Michael Young, and Alex Gordon?

The same way Brandon Phillips is higher than Ian Kinsler and Dustin Pedroia and Francisco Rodriguez higher than multiple other relievers. It's probably a nonsense formula much like the one used to come up with the Elias rankings that are used for free agency compensation.

I take it you take exception to their rankings? how out of whack do you think they are? totally off base? slightly out of line as in all of the top20 should be in the top 20 but not necessarily in the order they ranked them?

Any semi-reasonable ranking is, overall, going to be okay, but there's many things to pick out of this that makes no sense...especially considering its apparently based only on 4 stats for hitters and 4 for pitchers, so it's sort of like a fantasy ranking masquerading as a real ranking...yet they don't use all the fantasy stats.

It isn't terrible, for the most part I agree with the general area where players are ranked, but there are just a lot of head scratchers.
