Re: Worth Repeating: The Colorado Rockies 2008 and Beyond

RSR:Uh oh, I better hope we pull out this game five.

    ****

    Game Five:
    (Brandon Hynick at John Smoltz)

With John Smoltz taking the mound for game five Atlanta was buzzing. The revival of Smoltz? The Braves finally back in the NLCS? It was all up in the air as the game began and Willy Taveras walked to the plate. All of it was up in the air.

The Rockies take an early lead thanks to a second inning home run from Ian Stewart. Brandon Hynick pitches well until Chipper Jones gets a hold of one in the bottom of the fourth to give the Braves at one run lead at 2-1. It stayed this way until the seventh inning…

The Rockies entered the seventh inning trailing by a run and with really nothing going offensively. A triple by Tulowitzki had nothing come of it in the fifth and now time was running out. Seth Smith stepped to the plate against John Smoltz, Seth was 1 for 3 on the day with a single in the third inning.

Smoltz started the at bat with a curveball that Smith saw all the way. Smith later recalled the pitch as larger then life as he crushed it into the gap for a lead off double. The Rockies were underway. Two outs later saw Willy Taveras come up as the Rockies last hope to tie. Smoltz threw a fastball, it clocked 91 miles per hour on the gun, but Willy caught it at the end. It hung in the air…it looked like Escobar would grab it at short…but he didn’t. It blooped into the outfield. Smith rounded third and headed home. Aaron Rowand, a defensive substitute, grabbed and fired but it was too late, Seth Smith had tied the game at two off the bat of Willy Taveras and the Rockies dugout was going crazy. Then Troy Tulowitzki stepped to the plate.

Smoltz had been overworking his fastball the entire inning, he wasn’t mixing up his pitches and Tulowitzki caught him for it. The pitch was just a bit up, just enough for Tulo to catch it. And catch it he did. It flew over Franceour’s head and hit the wall in right, Taveras would score easy. It was now up to Smoltz to prevent the big inning. Taveras touched home without even a throw. Tulowitzki grabbed second easy and the Rockies had taken the lead 3-2. It was a lead that would be tough to hold with Casey Weathers coming in for the bottom of the seventh.

Peter Moylan, the pitcher, is the only one to get on base in the bottom of the seventh and Casey Weathers, the rookie, pitches his way through a stressful seventh. Moylan then returned to strike out the side in the eighth and in came Taylor Bucholz to pitch the eighth inning with the Rockies still only up by one run.

It’s a steak dinner in the eighth. The kind managers love. Teixeira pops to short, Chipper flies to shallow right and Nick Swisher, the man hitting sixth going crazy so far this division series flies weakly to Brad Hawpe’s glove in right field and Bucholz walks off the mound with only twelve pitches dealt. It was Manny Corpas’ game now.

When Tulowitzki singled home pinch hitter Omar Quintanilla the clubhouse clapped and cheered but it was Manny Corpas who sighed relief. A two run lead wasn’t as stressful to deal with as a pitcher as a one run lead. It was Manny who was caught dumping water on himself in Philadelphia. It was Manny who closed out Arizona in the NLCS and now it was Manny who was about to give the Rockies their second straight berth in the championship series.

First up was second baseman Kelly Johnson. Kelly was hitting .290 so far in this division series and was 0 for 3 on the day making him hungry for a hit. He singled to right on Corpas’ third pitch, a 97 MPH fastball. It was a lucky hit and one that frustrated Manny. Hurdle came out and calmed him down with pitching coach Bob Apodaca. It worked. Corpas struck out pinch hitter Josh Anderson, pinch hitter Brayan Pena and on a 3-2 pitch to Aaron Rowand Manny threw a 94 MPH fastball that Rowand flung his bat at. It rolled into Tulowitzki’s glove, Tulo stepped, pointed, and fired…directly into Todd Helton’s glove. Helton jumped in the air just like he had done the year before as the dugout stormed the field. Dan and I shook hands in the owners box as the team crashed around Corpas. We had done it. The 2-0 comeback had been completed. Now, for Arizona. Rockies 4 Braves 2

    WP-Brandon Hynick
    LP-John Smoltz
    SV-Manny Corpas
    HR-Ian Stewart, Chipper Jones
    MVP-Jeff Francis

(Other scores: Diamondbacks destroy the Reds 14-5, Angels complete the comeback with a 3-2 win)

    CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES PREVIEW

    American League Championship Series:

Detroit Tigers (defeated Rays 3-0 in ALDS) vs. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (defeated Red Sox 3-2 in ALDS)

Analysis: The Tigers will have home field advantage in this chase for the pennant but looking at the numbers is appears this will be the only advantage the Tigers will have. The Angels have scored more runs, have a better average and a better team ERA. The John’s of Los Angeles in John Lackey, Jon Garland and John Patterson look to take control early against a Detroit team that wins in what seems like a different way every night.

Prediction: The Tigers ended the Rays dreams but the Angels have more then dreams…they have expectations. Angels in 6

    National League Championship Series:

Arizona Diamondbacks (defeated Reds 3-2 in NLDS) vs. Colorado Rockies (defeated Atlanta 3-2 in NLDS)

Analysis: Back to back seasons now the Diamondbacks and Rockies will meet for the pennant and the championship of the National League. The last time these two met the Rockies swept the Diamondbacks four straight at home in Colorado. The Rockies injuries appear to be getting better as Aaron Cook will rejoin the team this series but the Rockies can’t afford falling to an elimination game against an Arizona team refusing to die. This Arizona team is better then last year, this Colorado team is not.

Prediction: Like we said, Arizona is better then last year with Dan Haren. The 1-2 punch lives on and the Diamondbacks return to the world series. Diamondbacks in 6

Re: Worth Repeating: The Colorado Rockies 2008 and Beyond

Note: My apologies for this taking a week to get updated. Finals and summer stuff have been taking up a lot of my time. This also led to quick write ups of the NLCS. Still, enjoy!

    ********

    National League Championship Series:

Game 1 (Jeff Francis at Danny Haren)-Jeff Francis takes a perfect game into the seventh before an Eric Byrnes home run ties the game up. A Seth Smith home run and two more runs in the ninth give us the game one victory. Rockies 5 Diamondbacks 3

    LP-Danny Haren
    SV-Manny Corpas
HR-Troy Tulowitzki, Eric Byrnes, Seth Smith

(Other scores: The Tigers open with a 6-2 win and set the tone for the series with the game one victory)

Game 2 (Aaron Cook at Micah Owings)-The Diamondbacks score three in the first inning and never look back taking an easy win and sending the series back to Coors tied at one. Diamondbacks 6 Rockies 1

    WP-Micah Owings
    LP-Aaron Cook
    HR-Todd Helton, Conor Jackson

(Other scores: Tigers win a thriller in the tenth inning 4-3 and lead the series 2-0)

Game 3 (Brandon Webb at Ubaldo Jimenez)- Brandon Webb pitches a gem and the offense can’t score a run until he leaves in the ninth inning. Diamondbacks 6 Rockies 3

    WP-Brandon Webb
    LP-Ubaldo Jimenez
HR-Chris Snyder, Chris Young, Austin Kearns

(Other scores: Angels win in a thriller 7-6 in the tenth to trail the series now only 2-1)

Game 4 (Doug Davis at Brandon Hynick)- Brandon Hynick pitches a beautiful game…this kid is going to be something in the future. We even the series. Rockies 4 Diamondbacks 1

    WP-Brandon Hynick
    LP-Doug Davis
    HR-Ian Stewart

(Other scores: The Angels tie the ALCS at 2 with a 3-0 win at home.)

Game 5 (Danny Haren at Jason Hirsh)- We start Jason Hirsh in game five to save Jeff Francis for game six or even game seven. He pitches an outstanding eight innings giving up one run and having nine K’s. Rockies 2 Diamondbacks 1

    WP-Aaron Cook
    LP-Micah Owings
    HR-Brad Hawpe 2, Clint Barmes
    MVP-Brandon Hynick

Re: Worth Repeating: The Colorado Rockies 2008 and Beyond

    WORLD SERIES PREVIEW

Colorado Rockies (92-70, defeated Braves 3-2 in NLDS, defeated Diamondbacks 4-2 in NLCS, 2nd WS appearance, zero titles) vs. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (90-72, defeated Red Sox 3-2 in ALDS, defeated Tigers 4-2 in ALCS, 2nd WS appearance, one title)

Analysis: The Rockies have become destinies darlings once again. This year however they have proven 2007 was not a fluke. That they should be considered one of the best teams in the majors and have the power and depth to do it. They lost Franklin Morales and Matt Holliday right before the playoffs and have powered on anyway. The Angels have played two rough and tough series vs. the Red Sox and Tigers and now have home field advantage against the Rockies here for the world championship. The pitching of the Angels is up and down but the Rockies have found an unsung hero in Brandon Hynick to back up Jeff Francis and Aaron Cook. May the best team win.

Prediction: We have picked against the Rockies all playoffs and we aren’t about to change now. Angels in 7.

Re: Worth Repeating: The Colorado Rockies 2008 and Beyond

    October 20, 2008

    Anaheim, California

    World Series Game One

    (Jeff Francis at John Lackey)

Anaheim without a doubt is the place to be in October. It’s still 70 and sunny and still feels like baseball is in mid-summer swing. Dan, Charlie and I were all watching batting practice from the dugout when Clint Hurdle walked up to us.

“Big series, eh?” Dan said to Clint with a smile.

“Oh, I guess so,” Clint laughed and shook all of our hands. “You boys down here to take some cuts?”

We laughed as Clint nodded towards the batting cages. Todd Helton was currently taking some swings and sending the balls deep into the outfield and some out of the park. Troy Tulowitzki was sitting on the outside of the cage giving Todd some ribbing as he took his swings.

“How’s Matt doing?” I asked as I saw our slugger sitting in the dugout with a suit on.

“How would you feel if your team was in the world series but you were too hurt to play?” Clint said. “He’s sad but have you seen Brad lately?”

“Brad?” I said as Clint nodded towards Hawpe standing in right field chatting with Seth Smith. “What’s up with him?”

“He heard a rumor that Dan was leaving the team,” Clint looked over at Dan who was chatting alone with Charlie and could not hear what we were talking about. “Something Brad Wilkerson told him about Dan possibly going to Seattle next season.”

I turned towards Clint and nodded towards the dugout to indicate we should move down. “Wilkerson told Brad this?” I said.

“Yeah,” Clint noticed the seriousness in my voice. “Is it true? Is Dan leaving?”

“I don’t know, but I would wonder why Seattle players know more about this then they should, who did Wilkerson hear this from?”

“No idea, I can talk to Hawpe about it if you want me to,” Clint spit some sunflower seeds in the dirt. “On the plane back to Colorado might be best.”

“Up to you,” I said. “I just want to know why Wilkerson is spreading this info around to our players. Seems kind of unethical if you ask me.”

Clint nodded. “Look, if its true, who will take over for him? You?”
“Is that a problem?” I laughed and Clint chuckled. “I’m not sure I suppose Charlie will do some interviews, it would be nice to get promoted I feel I know this team better then anyone else but Dan.”

“Well, I’ll talk to Brad,” Hurdle said and then perked up as Dan and Charlie walked over to us with curious looks on their faces.

“What are you boys talking about?” Charlie called with a smile.

“Ah, just how we saw your sister last night at the strip club,” I said and they all laughed. Helton blasted one back into the waterfall and we decided to start heading up into the owner’s box as the fans piled in to see the game.

“Good luck tonight,” we said to Clint and shook his hand.

Re: Worth Repeating: The Colorado Rockies 2008 and Beyond

Note:Sorry, sorry, sorry for this taking so long. I got caught up in my life. This dynasty is not dead (at least not yet)! Please enjoy the world series...

    ***********

    2008 World Series

Game 1 (Jeff Francis at John Lackey)-Brad Hawpe crushes a home run but the Angels put up five earned runs on Francis in the first four innings and don’t look back. Angels 6 Rockies 1

    WP-John Lackey
    LP-Jeff Francis
HR-Brad Hawpe, Mike Napoli, Matt Diaz

Game 2 (Aaron Cook at Jon Garland)-Jon Garland pitches a complete game shut out and we are down 2-0 heading back to Colorado.

    Angels 5 Rockies 0
    WP-Jon Garland
    LP-Aaron Cook

Game 3 (John Patterson at Ubaldo Jimenez)-Tulowitzki hits a two run shot in the home opener of the series and the Rockies win a world series game for the first time in team history. Rockies 6 Angels 3

    WP-Ubaldo Jimenez
    LP-John Patterson
    SV-Taylor Bucholz
    HR-Troy Tulowitzki

Game 4 (Jered Weaver at Brandon Hynick)-Hynick struggles as three Angels leave the yard and we fall behind to elimination point in the series. Angels 6 Rockies 2

    WP-Jered Weaver
    LP-Brandon Hynick
HR-Casey Kotchman, Howie Kendrick, Juan Rivera, Todd Helton, Brad Hawpe

Game 5 (John Lackey at Jeff Francis)-Francis and Lackey duel for eight innings before a Matt Diaz solo home run in the top of the eighth gives the Angels the lead and it was a lead they would not relinquish. Once again, a team would celebrate on our home field as the Angels stormed the mound and won the world series in game five. Angels 2 Rockies 1 (Angels win series 4 games to 1)

    WP-John Lackey
    LP-Jeff Francis
    SV-Francisco Rodriguez
    HR-Matt Diaz
    MVP-Jon Garland

    October 26, 2008
    20th and Blake

When Dan O’Dowd called me the morning after the Angels celebrated a world championship on Coors Field and said he was leaving for Seattle I wasn’t shocked at all.

“What does this mean for me?” I asked.

“I don’t know Lyle, but it was a pleasure working with you, and I will remember you if you need a job in a couple weeks.”

“Thanks, Dan,” I said and he hung up the phone. That was it. Bill Bavasi was fired at 12:45 PM in Seattle and three hours later Dan O’Dowd was named his replacement. The Mariners had become O’Dowd’s next project and now Charlie was left with a decision. Hire me, the assistant GM? Or go outside and grab a man unknown to the team but who could make good decisions. Not only did Bavasi lose his job on the 26th but the Cubs cleaned house. Piniella and Jim Hendry were gone and the Cubs were set to rebound and win a world championship for Chicago. I called Charlie around four in the afternoon and asked him what the plan was.

“Well, Lyle, we’re going to interview a few candidates and your going to be one of them,” Charlie said. “I won’t tell you who the other finalists are but right now we’re going to hold things down. We’ll call you in a couple of days. If another team calls, feel free to interact and interview elsewhere.”

“Alright,” I said. “Thanks Charlie for being straight forward.”

“I can tell you that I’m leaning towards you but we’ll see what Clint has to say and we need to make a good decision on this, we’ve won two straight pennants.”

    “I understand. Thanks again Charlie.”

“See you in a couple of days.”

michael: Thanks for the praise! I hope to keep this one going for a while.

    October 28, 2008

Over the past two days three more managers and two GM’s were fired. Ozzie Guillen and Ken Williams were fired from their posts at the Chicago White Sox. Eric Wedge was relieved of his post in Cleveland after a disappointing 2008 (this after a 2007 trip to the ALCS), and the Nationals completely cleaned house after a 100 loss season firing GM Jim Bowden and manager Manny Acta along with all the bench coaches and assistant GM’s. Charlie called me around eight in the morning and told me there were three finalists. I was one, Ken Williams was one and Diamondbacks assistant GM Roger Blyven would be a third. We would all interview next week for the position. Blyven and I were without head GM experience which gave us a disadvantage to Williams and forced us to interview better.

    *********************************************************

    November 2, 2008

The day before free agency started I got the call from Charlie. I had interviewed perfectly and he was ready to offer me the position, I told him I would call him back with my decision in a few because I wanted to think over the offer. It wasn’t that I was not ready to accept, I just didn’t want to sound desperate for the position. I didn’t want to sound as though I had to have this job and get into Charlie’s pocket. I was going to wait a few hours but I couldn’t sleep on it as free agency started the next day which would put me to work right away. As I was waiting the White Sox called.

    “Mr. Branigan?” a voice asked.

“Yes,” I said. “Who is calling?”

“This the Chicago White Sox, as you might know we had a recent change of management and we were wondering if you would be interested in taking over the post.”

    “As general manager?”

    “Yes, sir.”

    “Would I need to interview?”

The voice laughed. “Mr. Branigan we have received a recommendation from our good friend Dan O’Dowd and we feel you are the right man for the job, no interview needed.”

“I’ll consider your offer,” I said. “I’ll call you back in a few hours.”

“Mr. Branigan whatever anyone else is offering you we will pay more, I assure you. We are quite ready for your services here in Chicago.”

As I hung up I realized, I had a major decision to make in the next three hours.

Re: Worth Repeating: The Colorado Rockies 2008 and Beyond

Hello! Yes, after what seems like forever the dynasty has returned! Worth Repeating has installed itself once again as a dynasty amongst the forum. I toiled with returning to this dynasty for many a day. Could I keep it going? I thought to myself, could I actually work with it? I jostled decisions in my head to maybe go into the past a bit and do a 60's dynasty but nothing ever came to fruition. The Rockies have returned, and so has OregonDuck! And now, the continued legacy of Lyle Branigan and the Colorado Rockies

    The Decision:

I sat at My Brother’s Bar in downtown Denver. Currently, My Brother’s was the oldest bar in Denver (not always known as My Brother’s Bar) and had been around since 1910. The National Western Stock Show brought it the most business in January. I’m sort of a new customer but its location right on the river helps me think. It was here I would make my decision. On my third Guinness and my second basket of French fries I thought of the pros and cons of the Rockies and White Sox. The Rockies were a good team already with a farm system that promised great years to come, but they were run on a tight budget and as a team we couldn’t make many free agent acquisitions.

The White Sox however had a good budget and I would be allowed flexibility, but they were rebuilding and would be a project. I knew being in the American League would throw me into a lot of good teams right away.

I decided on the Rockies. Easier said then done but this team deserved my loyalty as they had pulled me out of nowhere.

I called Charlie and gave him the good news. I was going to be a Rockie.

Re: Worth Repeating: The Colorado Rockies 2008 and Beyond

    SEASON AWARDS AND FREE AGENCY:
    RE-SIGNING PERIOD:

We are 12 million dollars under budget and the following players are up for new contracts coming into the 2009 season:

Ryan Spilborghs (.388, 8 HR, 29 RBI asking for 3 million in arbitration)

I have a dilemma, Spilborghs or Taveras? We take the chance at Taveras’ higher salary and release Spilborghs to free agency.

    Brad Hawpe (.291, 43 HR, 97 RBI asking for 3 years/12 million)

Hawpe was one of our top offensive contributors but he is asking for an outrageous sum. We negotiate for 5 years/8.5 million but he declines. I offer 5 years/9 million and again Hawpe declines, this time leaving the table and opting for free agency. Brad Hawpe is released.

    Willy Taveras (.316, 6 HR, 49 RBI, 52 SB asking for 6 million/2 years)

We talk to Taveras’ agent and see if we can get this kid down. We offer 5 years/5.4 million and he takes it no questions asked. We now have quick footed Willy for five more years.

Clint Barmes (.257, 7 HR, 17 RBI in arbitration asking for 2.9 million)

We offer 2.5 in arbitration but the court rules against us and Barmes will be a Rockie in 2009 under a 2.9 million dollar contract.

    Taylor Bucholz (1-2 2.97 ERA, 43 K in 56 games, asking for 1.6 million/4 years)

This was a one offer signing. The kind we like to see. Bucholz was signed to a 1.6 million dollar contract until 2012.

    Luis A. Gonzalez (.167, 0 HR 5 RBI)

A defensive specialist we just can’t seem to afford anymore. He’s asking for 2.1 million over four years. Not even close. We release Gonzalez.

Jeff Baker (.274, 6 HR, 35 RBI asking for 1.3 million until 2011)

Baker is a good back up first baseman who is still developing behind Helton. We sign him to the 1.3 million dollar contract and lock him up for the next three years for better or for worse.

    Jose Capellan (1-0 8.41 ERA 38 K in 26 appearances asking for 1.4 million until 2013)

Capellan is someone we need to keep in the minors and 1.4 million is a lot for a minor league reliever but we figure if we lock him long term he will pay us back in huge numbers. We sign Capellan.

    Releases:
    Mark Redman
    Victor Zambrano
    Matt Herges
    Micah Bowie
    Josh Towers
    John Koronka

(All pitchers, all in the minor league system, all demanding over a million in salary, we released them with ease)

    *********************************************************

The top ten free agents of 2008:

Re: Worth Repeating: The Colorado Rockies 2008 and Beyond

    Winter Meetings I
Baseball’s winter meetings for 2008 were held in Las Vegas, Nevada. I met Dan at the Mirage the night I got in and we sat down to have a drink. Earlier in the day Dan had signed Brad Hawpe, his only big move thus far of the free agent season, and we sat to discuss the coming 09 season.

“So couldn’t let Brad leave you eh?” I said. Dan chuckled.

“Of course not,” Dan said. “As soon as I saw you let him go I swooped right in.”

“Listen Dan,” I was about to say something I had held inside since I had heard about in game one of the series. “What went down with you going to Seattle didn’t seem all that ethical…Brad said he heard from Wilkerson that you were leaving. This was twelve days before you announced it. What happened?”

    “Brad told you this?”

“Well, no,” I sipped my beer. “Clint brought it up before game one because Brad was feeling down or something.”

“I’m not sure what you mean by all of this.”

“Dan, if Wilkerson knew about it, that means the Seattle management told their players and Wilkerson was spreading it as a distraction to our team, that isn’t exactly ethical.”

“What Seattle did last year wasn’t my problem, maybe it was a lucky guess.”

“Lucky guess?” I looked at Dan but he looked off in the distance.

“Look, Lyle, your new so I’m going to give this to you easy,” he stared at me. “Sometimes things happen that you wouldn’t exactly see as ethical. Look at Jim Bowden, if we hadn’t kept what he did under wraps we would have been screwed.”

    “What did Bowden do?”

“Look, its not important, just finish your beer. Jim is in Japan now running that league. I’ll see you in a couple of days,” Dan paid for both of the beers and got up to leave.

“Are you telling me something?” I grabbed Dan. “Dan?”

“Lyle, I’m telling you that sometimes there are points when you keep your nose out of things. Ok?” Dan turned and left, I watched him as he walked out.

    Ok.
