Yeah, I traded for Sheff for just that purpose. He has 14 homers this year so far, but has a nice OBP of .443. He will be batting third, unless Piazza, Wright, or Hidalgo catches fire.
Currently I am renegotiating with the players that asked me to speak to them next month.

    Mets Extend 3
    7.12.04
Mets management is excited due to there recent contract extensions.
First came Braden Looper, at about noon today. Looper, who said he wouldn't negotiate until the offseason, apparently changed his mind after the additions of D-Train, Pierre, Castillo, and Sheffield. Looper, who has appeared in 37 games is 22/24 in saves. He signed a 3-year extension that will pay him 8.4M, starting immediately.
Next came veteran starter, Al Leiter. Leiter will be pitching long relief after the acquisition of D-Train, but apparently doesn't mind. Leiter is 4-6 in 13 games this year with an era of 4.90. He is signed thru 2006, making 3.7M a year.
Lastly came shortstop, Christian Guzman. The Mets assured he'd be here for a while, locking him up for 7 years, with a player option for an eighth. He will get paid 2.75M a year, and his option is worth 3.5M. He is guaranteed 19.5M, and could get as much as 22.75M, should he pick the option up.

D-Train Gives Up 6 In Debut
    7.14.04
After two trades that appeared to end up prommising, started out bad. The three hitters the Mets traded for went a combined 7 for 34, with 2 walks, 3 strikeouts, and no extra base hits.
D-Train didn't make it any better, as his 6-run, 3-inning performance set the background for an Oriole sweep of the Mets, finsihed off by a 4-hitter from Rodrigo Lopez.

    Mets Trade For Closer
    7.15.04
After a week of talking, the Brewers, and Mets have agreed in principle on a trade sending closer Danny Kolb (81/83) to New York for starting pitcher Jason Marquis (77/78). It is expected that Kolb will be the closer, starting immediately.
The Mets take on Atlanta after this day off. If the Mets are going to make a comeback, and make a strong case for the wild card, or possibly the division, this is a must win series.

Mets Take 2 Of 3 From Atlanta
    7.18.04
The Mets finished off there 3 game series with Atlanta last night. After losing game 1 by a score of 6-3, they went on to win games 2, and 3. Heilman went 7.1 IP, allowing 2 runs. Aaron is 5-2 in his last 10 games. After winning 3-2 in game 2, Tom Glavine, David Wright and the Mets powered through the Braves. Glavine pitched 8 innings, his only run coming off a solo shot in the third. Wright hit a 2-run homer in the third, to help lead the Mets to victory.

D-Train, And Mets Edge Out Sox
    7.19.04
The Mets beat out the Sox yesterday in a good nine inning game. Dontrelle Willis pitched 7 innings of 2-run, while Doug Mientkiewicz had a 2-run homer in the second, and a Hidalgo RBI double in the sixth set the final score: 3-2.

    Sheffield Powers Mets Past Boston
    7.20.04
The Mets appeared as if they would be going to extras for this game, but thanks to a Sheffield solo home run in the eighth inning, Kolb came in and saved his second straight game.

Pedro Hurls Shutout; Manny, Papi, Nixon Go Deep
    7.21.04
Boston is in there own divison race at the moment. Had they been swept, they would've had a slender half game lead. As the story goes, Cy Young candidate shutouts the Mets, and the 2-3-4 hitters hit solo shots.

Late Met Rally Caps Off Win
    7.22.04
The Mets scored all 4 of there runs in the three last frames to beat the Phillies 4-2. Wright homered, his tenth on the year, and Kolb came in got save #30.

    Mets Lose In Extras
    7.23.04
The Mets lost in 13 thanks to Looper giving up a walk-off single to Phillie shortstop, Jimmy Rollins, putting them 7.0 behind the first place Braves for the division lead. There 8 and 1/2 out of the WC.

If Darth, or Jeffy is reading this, then I am sure you guys will be happy to know Pujols has a chance for the ML Triple Crown. He third the Majors in average (10 points behind Ichiro, second in NL, trailing by 7 points), leading all of baseball in RBI at 106 (Nomar second at 90, 16 ribs behind), and finally Pujols has 27 HRs (T3 behind Mags (29), and Manny (28), and is tied for the league in NL at 27).
Also, in 99 games, Beltran has 23/23, on his way to join to 30/30 club, and if he gets hot, he could be the fourth member in the 40/40 club (Soriano isn't in until '06, I believe it was.)

Hey if I was you, post monthly by monthly I know that this trade crap gets more fans but its really bringing this down. Just wasting posts IMO. And cut down on trades, you've made like a bunch and thats un realistic so I would say stop trading and try to limit yourself next year.

Thanks for that, and I will be sure to limit myself next year. 2 or 3 sound like a better number with 1 in the offseason (winter meetings)?

Mets Lose In Ninth To Braves, 9 Out
    7.28.04
The Mets lost in last inning, and with one out left to get. The game was tied, and set-up man Heath Bell came in to hold it down. Bell gave retired one, gave up a base hit, Furcal sacrificed himself, moving him over, and LaRoche his an 0-1 slider down the line for the walk-off win.
The Mets are now 9 games back, and it appears there season may be over with 2 months left to play.

    Trade Dealine Woes
    7.31.04
These deadline woes are no longer Met woes! Three days after losing a game to the Braves in the ninth, the Mets had a meeting on there off day, the Braves lost that day. The Mets are now in a series with Florida in Shea, and have taken the first two games from them, as the Braves on are a 3 game losing skid.
Thanks to this losing streak from Atlanta, the Expos, and Phillies are just a half game behind, while the Mets are 6.5 back. Every divisional game down the stretch has a huge importance for the Mets if they want a chance at being the NL East Division Champion Mets, or just the Mets that finished in fourth place.

    MAY IN REVIEW

New York Mets: 52-54 (12-11 in July), 6 GB in NL East, 9.5 GB in WC
    AVG: Gary Sheffield - .310
    HR: Mike Piazza – 24
    RBI: Richard Hidalgo - 75
    SB: Luis Castillo - 41
    W: Aaron Heilman - 9
    ERA: Aaron Heilman – 3.51
    K: Aaron Heilman - 123
    SV: Danny Kolb - 31

After bettering the team thru trades, our hitting has greatly improved. Our pitching has been doing good for awhile, and despite the month-long injury to Glavine, I think we still have a good chance to make a comeback and with the division.

    Mets Complete Sweet
    8.1.04
The Mets complete a 3-game sweep of the Marlins today, picking up 2 games in the division in the process. David Wright got the game-winning single in the 12th.

Padres End Mets Modest Winning Streak
    8.3.04
After the Padres got beat down, 10-1, they beat the Mets in game two of the series, 8-6, ending the Mets modest 4 game wining streak. After the Braves short losing streak, there back to there winning ways, and the Mets lost a game; there now 7 behind.

Mets Sweep Giants, Pick Up 2
    8.8.04
The Mets picked up 2 games on the Braves, now just 5 behind the division leaders, after the sweep of the lowly Giants Monday. The sweep put them about the .500 mark for the first time since May.
The Mets will now go to Montreal for a very important three game series agains the Expos. This could make, or break the Mets season, as well as the Expo's season.

Mets Lose Series In Extra Innings
    8.11.04
The Mets loss in extra innings last night, and lost the series, after a Jae Weong Seo shutout on Opening Day. Luckily, the Mets only loss 1 game, and is now 6 back.
They are now going back to Shea, to play there last 3 game series with the Braves. If they can pull this off, they have a chance to win the division.

METS SWEEP BRAVES!!! FOUR GB PHILS!!
    7.14.04
The surging Mets completed a sweep of the former division leading Braves. They now are chasing the Phillies, who they have no more games with for the season. They're going to have to rely on the league to beat the Phils.
    Game 1: 6-3
    Game 2: 5-4 (WALK-OFF HR BY HIDALGO!!!)
Game 3: 6-4 (Despite 3-Run HR in first by new Brave, Javy Lopez)

Mets Lose 4 Of Last 6
    8.25.04
The Mets lost 2 to the division leading Expos, and the lowly Marlins in the past week, and it's going to take some timely hitting, and timely pitching if the Mets are going anywere other than home in another month.

    Back At Square One
    9.1.04
Despite there best month this season (18-10), the Mets are still 6 games back, not of the Braves, but of the Expos. Thanks to the Mets, the Braves are in third place, 4.5 GB.
It appears as if the Met's season is over. Players should start planning their vacations!
