June 200543-34 2nd Place AL West 11.5GB Texas 4GB Boston for AL Wild Card
Its not that we played bad this month. We were 15-11 in June, it was that Texas and Boston played better. Texas went 21-6 and Boston went 17-8. It looks like this season is slipping away from us. Luckily, we get the Rangers from the 1st to the 3rd and they play Boston right after that. If things to right, we can make up serious ground in either race. I'm not quite sure if I want to make a move at the deadline as I do not want to give up the prospects to get them.
Jason Bay and Tony Clark are still struggling to hit over the Mendoza Line. They have both hit 15 homers each so I'm not too worried but I may be towards the deadline. Carl Crawford was struggling in his second season in the bigs so we sent him back down to AAA to hone his skills. We called up Prince Fielder to see what he can do. Bay will play left field and Clark will DH, leaving Fielder to play first. We hope Fielder will supply us with the power we need. We decided to keep Zimmerman back as Theirot is still playing well. Zimmerman could be called up in August or September to help in the stretch run.
We called down the struggling Bobby Livingston to AAA and called up Ryan Rowland-Smith as we thought he was ready. Rowland-Smith will start against the Rangers on the 3rd in the place of Travis Blackley. Blackley is now the long man. J.J. Putz and Matt Capps seem to keep on struggling for some reason. They had good seasons the year before so I'm not sure what's going on. I guess we will have to see if we need to trade for an arm later during the season.

Blackley, Ethier and Narveson Shipped to Detroit.
GM Edgar Martinez made a deal with the Tigers just hours before the deadline. He send pitchers Travis Blackley, Chris Narveson and outfielder Andre Ethier to the Detroit Tigers for pitcher Felix Hernandez. "The Tigers called up Felix too fast so we pretty much gave them two starters to stop using Felix," said Martinez. Felix Hernandez, 18, already has 8 MLB starts under his belt. The Mariners plan to send him to AA to master his pitches and maybe come back up in a few years. Blackley and Narveson were dispensable as Seattle has 5/6 starters that are under team control for 3-6 years and did not want to waste talent in the minor leagues.
Trade Overview
SEA gets:
Felix Hernandez 18 (68/98)
DET gets:
Travis Blackley 22 (88/96)
Chris Narveson 23 (84/95)
Andre Ethier 22 (79/90)
July 200558-45 2nd AL West 8.5GB Texas 2nd AL Wild Card 2GB Boston
Well, it looks like the West is out of view for us with the Rangers having such a great lead. The Wild Card seems like the only way to go. We know we can catch Boston but we do not get to play them the rest of the year so we are gonna have to catch on fire.
We sent Prince Fielder back down to AAA as we thought he wasn't quite ready yet. He is still eligible for rookie considerations next year. First baseman Tony Clark hurt himself and we called Carl Crawford back up to take his spot. Carl will start in left field again and Jason Bay will be the DH. Bay and Clark have started to hit better and got their averages up to the .230s. We never talk about Ichiro but he's having a great year. He's been a great leadoff man as he has gotten base 36% of the time. Dan Wilson broke his ankle and may be out for the rest of the year. We called up Rene Rivera to take his spot.
Cha Seung Baek was our only All-Star rep and got the final two outs in the fourth but gave up 2 runs. Our rotation has been great this year and will be even better when Joe Saunders comes back in 9 days. Saunders will be the 5th man in the rotation and Ryan Rowland-Smith will be the long man out of the pen. J.J. Putz still hasn't figured it out and I'm starting to worry. A few more bad outings and I may have to put Matt Capps as closer and may even have to send J.J. down to AAA. Right now, I have so much pitching that I don't know what to do about them.

August 200580-52 2nd Place AL West 2.5 GB Texas 1st Place AL Wild Card 4 Games ahead Boston
Wow, what a great month. We were 22-6 and gained ground on Texas and blew by Boston in the Wild Card. Looks like we are playoff bound and we could still win the division. We have 7 games left with Texas and those are critical if we want to take the West.
Jason Bay is on fire. He raised his batting average 20 points in August and hit 11 homers as well. He is starting to show why we traded for him in the winter. Ryan Theriot continues to be impressive out of the nine hole. With the promotion of Ryan Zimmerman, Theriot may be traded in the winter. He should pull in a great bounty. Reed and Crawford are both hitting in the .250's and something is wrong here. It could just be a Sophomore slump so lets hope for the best next year. We have alot of players eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason. We are gonna have to shell out some money now.
Joe Saunders finally got off the DL after 15 months and has started 4 games. Other than one start, he has played real well. Could be the X-factor heading to the playoffs. We were finally fed up with closer J.J. Putz and sent him to the DL with "suck". We called up Mark Lowe to take his spot and he has done well. To fill Putz' roll as closer, we have used Matt Thornton, Matt Capps and George Sherrill in a closer by committee type of thing.

September/October 200597-65 2nd AL West 5GB Texas AL Wild Card Champions
We did it, we made the playoffs. We were worried for a while as we started to lose some games in the middle of the month and Boston started to win some games. Actually at one point, Boston was one game ahead of us. But we caught back up to them and on October 2nd or the 161st game, we clinched the Wild Card. We will play the Minnesota Twins in the ALDS.
While looking at our lineup, I realized we had a few breakout seasons that really helped us win the Wild Card. Second basemen Jose Lopez hit 12 homers and drove in 101 runs while batting second; I find that quite impressive. Catcher Kenji Johjima hit .275 with 13 homers while calling great games. And I also liked Rob Mackowiak. He was our primary left handed bat and played 5 different positions. Kudos to all the players mentioned.
Our pitching is surly our strength. We led the Majors in ERA and our rotation is stacked. Our four starter, Clint Nagotte, is 14-11 with a 3.54 ERA. That's good enough to be a ace or two starter on most teams. Our pen has been alot better since we took J.J. Putz out. Matt Capps has been a decent closer and guys like Thornton, Soriano and Sherrill make that bridge that much stronger. Mark Lowe, the guy that replaced Putz, has been playing well as well. He could be this years version of Matt Capps.

M's Win in 12
In a long pitching duel between the Mariners and Twins, the Mariners finally prevailed in the 12th inning to beat the Twins 2-1. Both starters John Patterson and Kyle Loshe pitched into the 8th inning and only gave up 1 run each. Seattle scored their first run of the game in the top of the first with a Jason Bay single to center that scored Jose Lopez from second. Minnesota scored in the fifth on a Dennis Hocking single to left which scored Brandon Inge from second. But after 10 innings of scoreless ball for the M's, Tony Clark blasted a 2-0 pitch from Jesse Crain deep to left center for the go-ahead home run. M's One Game Closer to ALCS
Your Seattle Mariners are one game closer to moving on to the ALCS with a 2-0 win over the Minnesota Twins in game 3 of the ALDS. They now lead the series 2-1. This was a pitching duel throughout the game. The game was broken open in the bottom of the eighth with back to back home runs by Carl Crawford and Ryan Theriot, the eight and nine batters. Matt Thornton had pitched a scoreless eighth to gain the win and Matt Capps came in in the ninth and got the save. But most of the work was done by starter Bobby Madritsch. He pitched seven scoreless inning and gave up eight hits and two walks. He still found ways to get out of his jams. Props to the Twins starter Eric Milton. He pitched 7 2/3 innings and got the loss. Still a great game for Milton.

M's Move On, Face Yanks Next
The 2005 season just keeps on going for these Mariners. Tonight, they beat the Twins 6-4 to move on to the ALCS. The game started well as rookie Clint Nageotte took the mound for Seattle. After giving up a run in both the first and second, he settled down and pitched 7 innings. We got one back in the bottom of the second with a RBI triple by Jeremy Reed. Things were quiet until the bottom of the seventh when Kenji Johjima blasted a two run homer run to right to give us the lead. With our solid bullpen, we thought we had this game. But Matt Thornton, who has been used in every game so far, came in and just unfolded before our eyes. After giving up a single and then getting the next two outs, we thought we were out of it. Then Thornton walked Russell Branyan and then Chris Richard had a two run double down the left field line give the Twins a one run lead. That lead would not last for long as we came back in the bottom of the eighth. After getting the first two runners on, Jason Bay had a single to center to drive in a run and then Rob Mackowiak, who came in for Tony Clark in the top of the eighth, drove a double down the left field line to score Carlos Guillen and Jason Bay. Matt Capps then came in and shut down the Twins in the ninth. We face the New York Yankees next in the ALCS. Can the Mariners get to their first World Series?

it's a fun dynasty to read. I have always secretly liked the Mariners, my favorite team in the AL West, that is probably because of Griffey though too and the 90's
ALCS Preview: Mariners vs. Yankees
New York Yankees 99-63 AL East Champions
Lineup:
This really isn't that fair. Its a good thing that they are missing Jason Giambi due to injury. That was another 30 homers.
Pitching:
They are stacked with starting pitching. They have their rotation plus 4 more starters in the pen. In a long game, I think they have the advantage.
it seems to me that the good teams are heavily stacked. like, unrealistically.
