August 200468-64 3rd Place AL West 7GB Texas
We have fallen back a bit in the standings but I think we still have a chance. In September, we play first place Texas 6 times and second place Anaheim 5 times. Those games are make or break for out club as they can propel us into the playoffs or have us fall farther behind those two clubs. The Wild Card seems out of question for us because we are 12 games behind Boston who is leading the Wild Card.
Our trade for Frank Thomas hasn't worked the way we have hoped. Thomas has a .216 average right now with a a .376 OBP. The OBP is better than alot of our players but it is still lower than the .400+ we expected from Thomas. He has hit 6 homers this month so he can still hit them out. On the other side of the trade, Julio Mateo continues to struggle so that's a good thing for us.
Offensively, everyone is finally above the Mendoza Line. Jose Lopez got his average to .213 which got us over the Line. Ichiro had a great month and is 42 hits away from 200. I'm sure that if we get to the playoffs, it will be because Ichiro got to 200 hits. Mariner Legend Edgar Martinez hit his 300th homer on the 25th off of Josh Anderson of the Yankees. We think this is great for Edgar and that he should be in the Hall.
J.J. Putz has started to become one of the best closers in the bigs. He has 36 saves so far and has led this great Seattle bullpen. Rafael Soriano has 9 wins out of the pen and has done well as the set up man. Rookies Matt Capps and Cha Seung Baek have done well and are front runners for Rookie of the Year. In other news, we have decided to move Ryan Rowland-Smith to the rotation next year. We think he has the stuff to do it and it will clear up the clutter in the pen. We wish good luck to Ryan.

September/October 200486-76 2nd Place AL West 8GB Texas
Unfortunately, we did not make the playoffs. We had a great run towards the end of the month but by then it was too late. Texas had already clinched the West and we were way out of the Wild Card. The Wild Card eventually went to the Boston Red Sox. The only downside of having a high record and not making the playoffs is that we now get a real low draft pick. But we should be alright as we have built a great farm system that should carry us for years to come.
Ichiro did not get to 200 hits as he fell 5 short. Jeremy Reed played real well in his first full season in the bigs, hitting .293 with a .339 OBP out of the 2 hole. Julio Lugo was not the prototypical three hitter and only hit 11 homers, but stole 35 bases. Frank Thomas, the mid-season acquisition, did provide the punch in the lineup that we needed. He hit 10 homers in 56 games which led the team in that time period. Carlos Guillen missed some time with injuries but still had a great year and hit 15 homers in 399 at bats. 41 year old Edgar Martinez is towards the end of his career. He hit .252 with 14 homers, we think he may retire soon. Rookie Jose Lopez struggled offensively towards the start of the season but we stuck with him and he eventually turned it on towards the end of the season. His defense never struggled and we think he may win the gold glove at second. Kenji Johjima never really got the bat going, but we think his excellent game calling abilities are the reason that the pitching improved this year. Carl Crawford hit decently his rookie year but only had 16 walks. He needs to improve that during the offseason and we expect alot more next year.
Pitching wise, there were some ups and downs. Rookie Cha Seung Baek went 12-8 in 32 starts and went about six and two thirds per start. We think he is the frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year Award. Another young gun, Bobby Madritsch, led the American League with a 2.70 ERA. John Patterson improved as the year went on and he may have his breakout season next year. Freddy Garcia started the year off well but faltered towards the end of the season. We think his skills may be declining and he is a trade candidate in the offseason. Jon Lieber was a bust with the Mariners and will not be renewed next year. J.J. Putz led the AL with 46 saves and had a 2.16 ERA. He is one of the best closers in the league and is still under club control for 4 years.

M's Send Garcia Back to Houston
Unimpressed by Freddy Garcia the last few years, the Mariners shipped their ace and $2 million to the Houston Astros for Willy Tavaras, Chris Burke and Ryan Theirot. Garcia started his career with the Astros organization before they sent him to Seattle in 1998 for then Seattle ace Randy Johnson. Garcia will hope for similar results as Johnson was 11-1 as an Astro. This move was made possible as there was no room left in the Mariners rotation. We had four young studs already and had Joe Saunders coming off the DL in the middle of the season.
Chris Burke is a super-sub that can play 7 positions effectively. He will be on the 25-man roster and will see time at all 7 positions. Theriot is an infielder that can play all 4 positions. I love a guy that can do all that. But the main part of the deal was Willy Tavaras. The speedy center fielder can play all three positions and we hope he can get on base at a steady rate so he can steal those bases.

Seattle Acquire Bay in Blockbuster Deal
One of the main weaknesses of the Seattle Mariners last year were that they had no power. They addressed that today and got outfielder Jason Bay from the San Diego Padres. The Padres wanted a bounty for Bay and the M's paid that bounty. Seattle sent Julio Lugo, Kendry Morales, Jered Weaver, Yuniesky Betancourt, Jorge Campillo, Fred Lewis and Reggie Willits for Bay. All of them will be missed. Bay will be the primary DH this year and will bat 4th behind Carlos Guillen.
Trade Overview

Jason Bay (90/93)

Yuniesky Betancourt (79/89)
Julio Lugo (90)
Kendry Morales (78/94)
Jered Weaver (81/88)

Spring Training 2005
With the start of a new season, there are many questions going around camp. Is Ryan Zimmerman big league ready? Will Cha Seung Baek and Bobby Madritsch repeat last years performance? Can Jason Bay produce on the big stage? Is Matt Capps for real? Can Jeff Clement be a real first baseman? And, Can the Mariners win the West?
Is Ryan Zimmerman Ready?
He might be ready and Spring Training will tell us a bit if he is. Allthough he may start in AAA since he only has about 150 AAA at bats.
Will Cha Seung Baek and Bobby Madritsch repeat last years performance?
We hope they do and we actually think last year was not a outlier. They played fairly well the season before and they are still improving.
Can Jason Bay produce on the big stage?
Seattle Washington is not really the big stage but he is closer to home which may cause problems. If he can hit 30-35 homers, we will be happy.
Is Matt Capps for real?
His minor league stats were filthy and he did well in his first stint in the Majors. He will be in the pen to start the year and we hope for good things.
Can Jeff Clement be a real first baseman?
We think Clement will hit about .330 with 15-20 homers when he peaks. While that may not a prototypical first baseman, he will still drive in runs and get one base. As long as he does that, we will be happy.
Can the Mariners win the West?
We think we can. We had a great year last year and we think we have gotten better. We also think Texas has regressed a bit. But that's why we play the games.
In other news, we have signed INF/OF Rob Mackowiak to a one year, 3 million dollar deal. He will be the lefty pinch hitter off the bench and could be in the running at third if Zimmerman is not ready.
2005 Amateur DraftWith all the excitement over all the trades and signings, I forgot about the draft. Here are out draft picks
1. Ivan Romas (P) 42/95. Could go either as a starter or a reliever. Has great upside. Only has two pitches though. May need to learn a third if he wants to be a starter
2. Jim Hodges (SP) 41/90. This guy is more of a starter. He can go deep into games and has three pitches. He is a power pitcher that relies on his fastball and needs to develop his secondary pitches though.
3. Ed Benitez (1B) 46/79. A power hitting first baseman who really isn't that good right now. He may become a DH if he cannot improve his defensive abilities. He also may move to left field if necessary.
4. Jair Jurrjens (SP) 43/75. Another pitcher who we think can be a middle of the rotation guy. Has three pitches and already has a plus fastball. If he can develop his secondary pitches, he will be fine.
5. Vince Clendennon (SP) 31/81. A risk/reward kind of guy, he has a plus fastball and likes striking people out. IMO, I don't he can make it but he may surprise us.
6. Randy Stavely (CF) 47/64. This guy is a piece of ****. He just sucks. He may be released in the next few years.
Hey! TRADE FOR OLERUD!!!! I'm sure he hit very well last season, didn't he?!?!?
John Olerud hit .268/.370/.382 in 92 games for the Tigers. He also is owed $7.2 million this year. Not a real good match for us.
Opening Day 2005
As Opening Day loomed, we have answered many of the questions that we have asked and answered the questions that were not asked. We learned that Ryan Zimmerman is not quite ready for the Bigs and sent him down to AAA. Prince Fielder erupted in the spring, hitting 7 homers and greatly improving overall. We also sent him to AAA to season up a bit. We also thought Jeff Clement was not ready so we signed Tony Clark to a one year deal to play first. Ryan Rowland-Smith's transition to the rotation was a successful one but will start in AAA to get better*. Apparently, Matt Capps was for real and will be the setup man for J.J. Putz. Now here are your 2005 Seattle Mariners!!!!

April 200513-11 T-2nd AL West 2.5GB Texas
Well, we are competing and are close to catching up with the Mariners. Veterans like Ichiro and Guillen have started the month off hot but newcommers Clark and Bay have struggled in the middle of the lineup. The biggest surprise offensively is infielder Ryan Theirot who is hitting .352 with a .452 OBP out of the nine hole. If he keeps this up, he may stay at third and we may let Zimmerman develop some more in AAA. Prince Fielder is killing AAA pitching and has hit 13 homers in 24 games. He may be due for a callup soon. Centerfielder Jeremy Reed will miss most of May with a shoulder separation. We called up Chris Snelling from AAA Tacoma. He will start in right field and we moved Ichiro to center.
Pitching wise, Cha Seung Baek is off to a hot start again; winning three of his first 5 starts and not losing any. John Patterson got rocked his last start but had played well his last 4 starts. Bobby Madritsch has done well going up against other staff aces. Rookies Travis Blackley and Clint Nageotte have played decently but could be called down to make room for Ryan Rowland-Smith and Joe Saunders when he's healthy. In the pen, J.J. and Matt have been rocked but the rest of the pen have been great. Saunders has only 100 days left until he's healthy.

May 200528-23 2nd AL West 6GB Texas 2nd AL Wild Card 1.5GB Boston
Well it looks like Texas is having a phenomenal year so far so the West seems out of hand. Not to worry, the Boston Red Sox of the AL East are leading the Wild Card and we are only 1.5 games behind. Their lineup is suburb but their rotation is suspectable. After the two aces Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe, they are led by mostly AAAAers.
Now lets forget about them and talk about us. Our offense has improved greatly but the two in the middle are still struggling. While they are hitting the bombs, they cannot get on base enough or hit the ball to be effective. Ichiro and Theirot have been great table setters and both have a .390+ OBP. Carlos Guillen is being his old self again with a .330/.390/.469 line. Jose Lopez has been a nice surprise for us at second and we hope that he continues it.
Cha Seung Baek is still undefeated and could win the Cy Young Award. The bullpen struggled this month and seems to be getting worse. One bright spot is Matt Thornton. The lefty has a 1.91 ERA in 19 innings.
