    Re: The Mariners Without Bavasi...

    M's gain a quality starter

Seattle made another move today by sending relief pitchers Shiggy Hasegawa and Kaz Sasaki to the D-Backs for starter John Patterson. Patterson, 25, saw some time with the big club last year; he has the makings to be a ace or two starter. He has some heath problems. He is still recovering from his torn rotator cuff, which he hurted after his first start of the year.

    Re: The Mariners Without Bavasi...

    April 2003
    9-15 4th Place AL West 8GB Anaheim

    Good
    1. Top of the order: Both Ichiro and Podsendink are getting on base and John Olerud is producing well in the three hole

    2. Carlos Guillen: Our shortstop is hitting well over .300 and has played excellent defense. He is due for a raise soon.

    3. Development of Ryan Zimmerman: Our future at third base is hitting over .340 with a .640 slugging in A ball so far. He could be promoted to AA ball soon

    Bad
    1. Offense after top of the order: It seems like the 3-7 batters have gotten off to a slow start. If we are to contend in the AL West, they need to heat up.

    2. Starting Rotation: Other than ace Freddy Garcia and 5 starter Jamie Moyer, none of the starters have fared well.

    Re: The Mariners Without Bavasi...

Coach Owens: He may have to soon.

    May 2003
20-30 4th Place AL West 11GB behind Anaheim

    Good

    1. Ichiro: Our star right fielder is hitting .348 and is again on pace to getting 200 hits for the third straight season.

    2. Freddy Garcia: Our staff ace has been the only bright spot in the rotation so far and has pitched well even tho he has a 2-5 record. He has held batters to a .210 average and may be an all-star this year

    3. Rafael Soriano: Our setup man is holding opponents to a .190 average and may soon become the closer if J.J. Putz cannot be effective.

    Bad

    1. The whole team: The entire team is struggling and moves may be made in July if the team does not improve in time.

    Transactions:
Traded 3b Jeff Cirillo, LF Ruben Sierra and C Ben Davis to the Yankees for RP Yorman Bazardo.
Called up SS Yuniesky Betancourt and is now the starting third baseman
Sent SP Jered Weaver back to AAA Tacoma.
Called up SP Bobby Madritsch from AAA Tacoma
Called up OF Jeremy Reed from AAA Tacoma
Promoted 3B Ryan Zimmerman from A to AA

    Re: The Mariners Without Bavasi...

    June 2003

    33-43 3rd Place AL West 11GB Anaheim

    Good
    1. Minor Leagues: In a down year for the big boys, its good to see that the litter guys are developing well and may be called up at the deadline

    2. Ichiro and Guillen: The only bright spot offensively, both are hitting over .300 and are the leading candidates to represent the M's in the All-Star Game.

    3. Pitching: The staff have gotten better this month and have led the surge to third. I'm hoping they can keep it up.

    Bad
    1. The offense is still struggling and more moves may be made there to replace struggling veterans with rookies.

    Re: The Mariners Without Bavasi...

    July 2003

    Good
    1. Its time for the young guns to play: We have traded some of our slumping veterans and have started giving the youngsters a chance to play

    2. Locked up some of our stars: We signed Ichiro Suzuki to a 10 year/46.4 mil extension and signed Carlos Guillen to a 6 year/46.2 mil extension.

    3. Minors continue to develop: At this rate, we will have these guys ready for the 2004 season

    Bad
    1. The offense continues to struggle. We hope the rookies can turn things around.

    Transactions:
Traded John Olerud, Bret Boone and Gene Kingsale to the Detroit Tigers for Jack Hannahan
Traded John Halama to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Andre Ethier
Signed Jay Canizaro, Rafael Palmeiro and Charles Gipson for the rest of the season
Called up Cha Seung Baek from AAA Tacoma to replace John Halama.

    Re: The Mariners Without Bavasi...

    August 2003
    57-75 4th Place AL West 17GB Anaheim

    Good
Bullpen: This has been one of our brightspots of the year. JJ Putz has 29 saves in 37 opportunities. Rafael Soriano has been a great setup man and George Sherrill has gotten all the lefties out.

Minor Leagues: In a down year where the big boys couldn't produce, the little guys produced down on the Farm. High picks like Zimmerman and Lincecum proved why we used our first two picks on them.

    Bad
Now that we blew the team up, there isnt that many bad spots. We know this will take time and the rooks will struggle.

    Re: The Mariners Without Bavasi...

    Sep/Oct 2003
    71-91 4th Place AL West 18GB Anaheim

    Good
We get the 8th overall pick in the draft. There is always good talent in the top 10

We finally let the young pups play and see what they can do. Eithier looks like he could start next year; hitting .275 this year. Clement and Reed struggled and may go down later.

We also called up Joe Saunders and he played well. He went 2-0 in 5 starts with a 2.04 ERA. He kept batters to a .195 average and righties hit .140.

    Bad
The season is over and we cannot develop the players anymore. That is always a bummer. Now its time to make decisions about the team later in the year. More moves may come soon.
