    McCann, Soto, or Martin.?

fantasy draft i was in these were my choices just prior to the run on catchers. i had to take one.

    league rules give pts offensively for;

    avg, r, h, 1b, 2b, 3b, sb, hr, rbi, and errors.

    1. How would you take them?

    2. Which is the safest pick?

    3. Which has the most upside?

I'd rank them McCann, Martin, Soto.

1: Martin, Soto, McCann, but I'm biased as a Dodgers fan. McCann has better slugging, Martin is a nice source of steals. Soto has the upside pick.

2: Probably McCann. seems like you can pencil him in for 20/90/.300 these days no problem.

3: definitely Soto, because we know what the other two can do, they've reached a plateau of production and have been there 3 years now. Soto could easily get even better.

    - McCann, Soto, Martin

    - McCann

    - I think they're basically equivalent. By this I mean, I don't think any of them are going to get much better than they are now. The catcher with the most upside is undoubtedly Matt Wieters.

I'm not as high on Martin as others, because of his relative lack of power and his heavy workload. He's a very nice guy to have, but for catchers, I'd take McCann, Soto, Mauer, and Chris Iannetta of the Rockies, a very underrated guy going into 2009, over him. The only reason I wouldn't take Wieters over him is because Wieters is likely to be had in the later rounds of the draft, so I'd nab both Martin and Wieters if the opportunity presented itself.

The problem with Martin at this point is that he just doesn't hit for power like McCann and Soto do, but he's still going to go among the top tier of catchers. Once someone drafts McCann or Soto, someone will immediately jump on Martin too, so you'd probably have to draft over his value.

At the same time, 20 steals from a catcher is pretty awesome.

Do you know for sure if Wieters is going to get the job in Baltimore?

Everything I've heard has him starting after 2 months at the latest. Your best bet would be to try and get him late and pick up an average catcher to start until then.

exactly the problem with weiters in fantasy, he won't be up until June at best. he's taken WAY too early based on his hype.

I took Soto. This draft was more a mock draft for me...i didn't have my "workbook" with me and was really going off of memory and last years stats which were easily obtainable in the draft room.

reason I took Soto over McCann is that both are near equivalent but I think Soto has more upside because of a better lineup around him meaning more RBI opportunities possibly, and as someone else mentioned...McCann has been consistently where he is. Soto is more risky, but could possibly improve.

reason I took Soto over Martin is the league values errors for one, and martin led the league I believe in errors for catchers. not sure however if thats something that stays constant from year to year though....also his power numbers are not where Soto & Martins are. I don't value his SB much at all....SB i can find easily throughout the season.

Draft went well...i had the #3 selection and traded down in the first round to #10 and got an 8th rounder in the deal. It ended up being Albert Pujols selected third who I traded for Mark Texiera and King Felix. Not bad IMHO. I actually like Tex better than Pujols fantasy wise this year.
