Daryl Strawberry is writing a book

about how he and his teammates were drunk, speed-freak smokers.

    ShysterBall's take:
I have no idea if it will be a good book or not, but I know one thing: Strawberry's story of alcoholism and hard drug use derailing the competitiveness of a fabulous team and a number of fabulous young talents will not be judged nearly as harshly as the story of PEDs used in the service of enhancing the competitiveness of more recent players. Booze, coke and speed are colorful, we will be told. Steroids are the tool of evil, godless cheaters.

Lol. Mike Lowell does have a book out, I own an autographed copy. It is a good read, and he jokes a lot about his time in the hospital and such

Why? It's about the Mets not the Yankees.

The difference is that these players were using drugs, destroying their lives, and harming their team. The players that used steroids were, whatever you think of steroid use, doing it in the interest of winning. But, the players that tried to win are demonized and held up as despicable people that tarnished the game, while those that harmed their baseball careers through excessive recreational drug use are held up as colorful characters. You don't see the complete backwardness there?

I think people see the charecters how best it suits their argument.

I think there are many who look at Strawberry, Gooden, Howe, LT and other longtime drug abusers as people with demons/addicitions that hurt their career and their teams. I know of nobody who knows them solely as "colorful". Can't one be colorful and have a drug problem?

I think people view ARod & Bonds as jacka$$es because of reasons far unrelated to steroid use. Roid use is cherry, thats all.

And the difference isn't what you claim it to be. Roids are performance enhancing, were hidden to gain an edge on the competition and to many made this whole era of statistics questionable at best.

Anyhow.........this is it for me in this thread. I don't have the patience for another go around.

Darn, too bad. I was very interested in your take on the motives being "to gain an advantage on the competition." I guess you're suggesting that's a very bad thing (although not sure, I could be reading it wrong). It would be interesting to know if you feel it's only bad in professional sports, or is it bad in all of life, or all competition, etc.

    Guess I'll never know now.

doesn't that suck? imagine a missed opportunity to hear your arrogant rants and attempts to manipulate words to put roid use on the same level as say "eating food". I would be so interested to know exactly what would be an "unacceptable" method used in a sporting competition to gain an edge on the competition as your ethics or lack there-of greatly intrigue me.

    But......dang, I guess I'll never know now.

Arrogant, lack of ethics???? I was legitimately curious about you're take on when gaining an edge on the competition was a legitimate endeavor and when it's not, that's all. I didn't make a judgement statement anywhere in that post you quoted, and I challenge you to point out a judgement drawn in that post. It was a question. Do you enter into every conversation as though it's an argument?

Dude, if you would only drop the last two letters of your name it would be such a perfect fit.

And when speaking of lack of ethics, you should probably be very careful yourself, very careful indeed. You jump on others (me included) with holier than thou posts while you've admitted "tricking" the system yourself in certain situations. What, it's ok for you but not others?? Hmm, let's see, what's the word I'm looking for here??????

    Strawberry can write?? wow..
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are .
