Aside from our pitching being really bad (10th in NL ERA), all is well in Redland. We keep getting hit by minor injuries (a product of our medical spending – last in the majors) but we still have the core of the team healthy.

LEAGUE NOTES
The St. Louis Cardinals (53-28) continue to have baseball’s best record. The Texas Rangers (28-55) continue to have the worst.
The Cardinals are winning without slugging 1B Mark McGwire. McGwire, a free agent at the end of this season, has been relegated to the bench in favor of 20-year-old rookie Albert Pujols. Big Mac isn’t happy, and is actively shopping himself to other teams in trade talks. The Braves, Mets, and Giants are the best candidates to land the active home run leader.
2B Ray Durham is heading to the West Coast. He was shipped to Oakland in return for 4 prospects.
With injuries to J.D. Drew and Ray Lankford, the Cardinals acquired some outfield depth by trading for Rangers OF Rusty Greer. In return, the Rangers get 2 prospects.
Esteban Loaiza was traded to Oakland from Texas in return for 2 prospects.
Frank Thomas and Chuck Knoblauch scored their 1000th career run on the same day. Ellis Burks accomplished the feat later in the month
Jim Thome’s 23-game hitting streak came to an end.
Fred McGriff’s 2000th hit wasn’t a home run. His 2004th was, and it was a milestone one at that: McGriff joins the 400 home run club.

BASEBALL AT THE TURN: A MIDSEASON GUIDE TO THE END OF THE SEASON
AL MVP: 1B Carlos Delgado, Toronto Blue Jays - .327, 27 HR, 85 RBI
Delgado rode a blazing June to an AL-leading 27 home runs and 85 RBI, good for 2nd in the league. He’s on the verge of going 30-100 for the 3rd straight season.
Honorable Mention: OF Manny Ramirez, Cleveland Indians - .363, 18 HR, 89 RBI
NL MVP: OF Jim Edmonds, St. Louis Cardinals - .285, 21 HR, 65 RBI
The best player on the best team, Edmonds has proven he can carry a ballclub. With his Top 10 numbers and usual stellar defense, this makes a more than worthy candidate.
Honorable Mention: 1B Todd Helton, Colorado Rockies - .361, 22 HR, 64 RBI
AL CY: SP Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees – 10-5, 3.72 ERA, 89 K
Pettitte has been the best pitcher on the Yankees staff all season long, leading the American League in wins. If he can keep that up for the second half, he’ll help the Yankees with their 26th World Championship.
Honorable Mention: SP Roger Clemens, New York Yankees – 9-4, 3.84 ERA, 93 K
NL CY: SP Curt Schilling, Philadelphia Phillies – 11-3, 2.87 ERA, 110 K
The easiest choice yet, Schilling leads the National League in wins, is 3rd in strikeouts, and is 5th in ERA.
Honorable Mention: SP Andy Benes, St. Louis Cardinals – 8-5, 2.78 ERA, 95 K
AL ROY: SP Mark Redman, Minnesota Twins – 9-0, 2.80 ERA, 40 K
Honorable Mention: RP George Sherrill, Seattle Mariners – 6-0, 2.63 ERA, 13 SV
NL ROY: SP Josh Beckett, Florida Marlins – 10-3, 3.18 ERA, 97 K
Honorable Mentions: Lance Berkman (.292-12-53), Matt Holliday (.314-8-46), Albert Pujols (.290-6-44)
Look at how loaded the NL is with quality rookies!!!
AL MAN: Art Howe, Oakland Athletics – 50-35
Honorable Mention: Joe Torre, New York Yankees – 45-38
NL MAN: Tony LaRussa, St. Louis Cardinals – 53-28
Honorable Mention: John Boles, Florida Marlins – 50-32

He doesn't list any other stats, so Batting Average is a bad one. Centerfield vs First Base...and it is a fantastic Center Field BTW.
RSR, boomboom: Yes, I did. It's because a) Edmonds is the leading power hitter on a team miles ahead of everyone else, and the Rockies are trying to keep their head above water, b) Edmonds has played center with nearly flawless proficiency, which is a much more demanding position than 1st base.
I completely understand your argument, and it honestly could go either way (heck, Griffey, Jeff Kent, and Guerrero could be in the conversation as well), but I gave the edge to the guy on the best team.
As an aside, I was only right on 1 of my Big 6 (MVP, CY, ROY) predictions: if you can guess which one, you'll get a player entered into next year's Amateur Draft. (Don't worry about Manager of the Year, I kinda just made that one up...)
and, as always, thanks for reading!

BIG MOMENTS IN JULY
JULY 3, 2000
REDS SWEPT BY CARDINALS; LOSE RIEDLING FOR SEASON
Although Ken Griffey, Jr. hit his 22nd home run of the season, it wasn’t enough for a high-powered Cardinal attack, as the visiting Redbirds swept the 3-game series.
Another blow for the Reds happened later when they found out that rookie relief pitcher John Riedling will miss the remainder of the season with a rotator cuff injury. Gabe White will take over in the bullpen.
JULY 8, 2000
DELGADO DEFEATS BELLE IN HOME RUN DERBY IN EXTRA INNINGS
JULY 9, 2000
NATIONALS REIGN SUPREME
The National League leapt out to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 12-4 victory over the American League in the All-Star Game.
Pirates RF Brian Giles was the game’s MVP, going 3-5 with 4 RBI.
Ken Griffey, Jr. was the lone Reds representative. He started in centerfield, and scored a run after hitting a triple.
JULY 17, 2000
GRIFFEY BURNS MARINERS, BUT REDS LOSE 2 OF 3
Ken Griffey, Jr. showed his former team what they were missing, going 5-10 with 2 HR and 5 RBI in the 3-game series, but the Reds were only able to take 1 of 3 from the visiting Mariners.
Griffey is hitting .321, with 26 HR and 78 RBI on the season. He’s also stolen 6 bases, and had 5 outfield assists, as he solidifies his case for a 2nd MVP award. The Reds, meanwhile, have fallen to 47-46.
JULY 19, 2000
GRIFFEY AMAZES NORTH OF THE BORDER: BLUE JAYS BEAT REDS 7-5
The Reds’ July tailspin continued with a 7-5 loss to the Blue Jays, but you certainly can’t blame Ken Griffey, Jr.
Junior hit 2 home runs, driving in all 5 Reds runs, and extended his hitting streak to 20 games. He’s now homered in 3 straight games.
The Reds, meanwhile have fallen to .500 (47-47), and are 6 games behind Wild Card leader Atlanta.
JULY 22, 2000
GRIFFEY LEADS REDS PAST BREWERS
Ken Griffey, Jr. hit his 29th home run of the year lead the Reds past the Brewers, 6-4. The win keeps the Reds above .500, at least for another day. Griffey extended his hitting streak to 23 games.
Junior’s home run was the 427th of his career, passing Billy Williams for 26th all-time. He turns his attention now to Andre Dawson’s 25th place (438 HR).

The pitching improved (marginally), and everyone but Junior stopped hitting. We need a serious run in the last 2 months, which judging by our schedule (48 games in a row starting on August 13!?), that seems unlikely.
