And I no longer believe that the Mets will make the playoffs next year.
Because they signed a league average pitcher?

    Re: Perez to Mets

I definitely believe the Mets will make the playoffs this year. The real problem with last year was their bullpen, and barring some terrible collapse, that is in really good shape. They have a killer lineup IMO:

    Wright is fantastic--MVP caliber
Reyes is very good--but doesn't do great under pressure
Beltran--best CF in the business IMO
Delgado still has one or two good years left

    Church--question mark

    LF--not good
    C--not bad
2B--Castillo needs to rebound from a not-so-great year

    Rotation is great also

    1. Santana
    2. Maine
    3. Perez
    4. Pelfrey
    5. Redding

Again, barring a horrible collapse, the Mets will make the playoffs.

It's not that much of a sure thing. The Mets are very good, but so are the Phillies, and if the Braves wise up and sign a good hitting outfielder, they could be a darkhorse candidate. The Mets are my pick right now, but if they don't make it, it's not going to necessarily be because they had a horrible collapse.

I don't know if that's a "great" starting rotation or not. It's above average...but far from dominant. Perez could blow up...Redding is fine at #5, but not a very good starter overall, Maine and Pelfrey will probably be solid. Santana is great. I'd call it a good rotation, but a lot can go wrong. The Mets are far from a lock to make the playoffs.
My runs created per 27 posts (RC/27p) was 12.4 last year. I should've been MVP.

Mets lose 122 games. Book it.

Is this the Mets or the Royals? What a stupid signing!!!

Perez is too old and he's left handed. And his batting average last year was only .107 ?!?!?!?!

Stop it Metsguy. Even before the season you're convinced the Mets aren't going to win the division, even though they are the favorites. Enough of your pessimism.

He thinks Oliver Perez is detrimental to their success.

Even though he admitted that John Maine's stats over the past two years have been basically identical to Perez's....but that doesn't matter because Perez is hated and Maine is a "favorite", and obviously, random people's opinions of players are what decides who wins baseball games.

if they would ignore you, and simply sign manny....all would be good again. Its such an easy fix.

Not really. 12 million per year is roughly the going rate for a league-average pitcher these days, and it's arguable that Perez is slightly better than average.

    Re: Perez to Mets

I could see this deal, maybe in a normal economic climate (when Carlos Silva was being signed for $10-$12mil per). But for Perez, this offseason? When some legitimate starters and past aces cant even get a deal yet?

I hope he improves and makes this worthwhile for the mets. He's not bad at all. I just wonder, were other teams offering anything like $12mil?
