    Perez to Mets

    unsurprisingly

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/0...oving-clo.html

Joel Sherman of the New York Post says the Mets and Perez have agreed to terms on a three-year, $36MM deal (no fourth-year option). Sherman says the signing "all but assures" Pedro Martinez will not be re-signed. You have to figure Ben Sheets is also out.

This contract will look awful by this time next year. Awful control, not that good of a pitcher. Servicable, but way too much money...but the Mets can afford it.
My runs created per 27 posts (RC/27p) was 12.4 last year. I should've been MVP.

3y/$36MM just sound way too much.

2 years running of league-average or better pitching. He does have awful control, but he is jsut entering his age-27 season and his upside is still good if he can harness his stuff some more. The Mets needed something, and Perez is the best option on the market save for Sheets who has huge injury concerns.

I think they should still go after Sheets, though. The more pitching, the better.

The contract seems a little much or a little long, but he has been solid the last two years, Yeah his control is suspect but his strike out totals aren't (9.24/9 and just shy of 1 per innng the last two years)

And as HGM said he's only 27, so while not a great signing, for a team that can support a payroll like the Mets, it works.

From Fangraphs Perez had last year a value of 6.5 million so if he stays the same basicazlly the Mets over paid by double his real market value.... I am not saying it is a bad deal but considering this is the same offer (supposedly) they gave to Lowe whose value was 22.0 million using the same system then it make you wonder why they didnt offer the latter a more honest deal.

Especially when he signed for the same dollar figure with an extra year !

I agree with you on Sheets although the risk factor (IMO) as been over played - he did pitch nearly 200 IPs last year & his status is not as bad as some (eg Pedro)

The problem with Sheets is that he hurt his arm at the end of the year, and judging from the reports I've seen, and his market (or lack thereof), it's pretty alarming.

On Perez, 6.5 mil was his salary. His "dollar" value using FanGraph's system was 5.8, and 8.8 the year before.

FIP of 4.69 last year, xFIP of 5.02. He doesn't suck, but that's too much money for him. I think he'll be league average at best, but I wouldn't be shocked if he just completely blew up. His control appears to be getting worse, I don't see it just getting fixed just like that. It's possible, but I wouldn't count it. Every time I watched him pitch last year his mechanics looked out of control and he just fell behind every single batter. I don't see him getting any better...no reason to think he'll find his control after struggling with it his entire career, with signs of regression instead of progression. It's possible, but unlikely.

If a mid- or small-market team made this signing, it would be a pretty bad one. Since it's a large market team, it's a 'meh' signing for me. Not very good, but won't hurt them.

He can pitch better then Perez, so I'd love to have him

And I no longer believe that the Mets will make the playoffs next year.
