while I understand the context, it does little good to mention additions without mentioning key subtractions as well.

Also a reminder of just how truly awful the NL West was/is.

how come Aaron Heilman is a 'key' acquisition when he figures to be traded away at some point? o.O

    This is hilarious:

    National League West: .437
Felipe Lopez (Diamondbacks), Jason Marquis (Rockies), Mark Loretta (Dodgers), Edgar Renteria (Giants), Bobby Howry (Giants), Jeremy Affeldt (Giants), David Eckstein (Padres).
After all, this division was sorely lacking aging infielders and mediocre pitching.

Note that this is the only division which has failed to acquire a truly impact player so far. This should change of course, as the Dodgers will get an outfielder, whether it's Manny, Dunn, or Abreu, and I'd expect the Giants to make a key acquisition as well.

Because he'll be a 'key' component to the trade

How is Jeremy Affeldt a key acquisition but Randy Johnson isn't?

Because he was already in the NL West with the Diamondbacks last year.

This is a list of players added to each division for 2009.

I don't think that's it, because it shows players like Burnett, Willingham, Olsen, and Everett on the list, and they were in the same division last year.
