    Torre trashes Yanks

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/01252009...zos_151965.htm

Scorned skipper Joe Torre is blasting the Yankees - calling many of his former players prima donnas, confessing he stopped trusting the powers that be years before he left the team and charging that general manager Brian Cashman betrayed him.

In an explosive new book called "The Yankee Years," Torre gets most personal in his attacks against Alex Rodriguez, who he says was called "A-Fraud" by his teammates after he developed a "Single White Female"-like obsession with team captain Derek Jeter and asked for a personal clubhouse assistant to run errands for him.

The book also reveals that, during spring training in 1999, team doctors revealed to owner George Steinbrenner that Torre had prostate cancer - even before informing the manager himself.

Some of the Yankees were prima donnas? The YANKEES? Are you kidding me?

"Torre spent years trying to bring out a winning performance from A-Rod, the highest-paid player in baseball, which from all reported accounts included a lot of hand-holding and battling the insecurities and demons Rodriguez struggles with."

didn't Arod win two MVP's under Torre?? isn't that a winning performance?

I'm glad at least somebody (the former manager of all people) is defending A-Rod. He gets unnecessary negative criticism all the time even though he is a great player. I feel like since he's better than Jeter in nearly every aspect of the game, Yankee fans love to hate him.

Or is he defending him? It doesn't clearly state. Seems like he's attacking him more than defending, lol.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call this "defending A-Rod":

It does clearly indicate his intent.

    Lambasting A-Rod, maybe.

The bookstore in two hours?..."I am so there."

EDIT:"The 477-page tell-all, which The Post purchased from a city bookstore last week, is written by co-author Tom Verducci, a longtime Sports Illustrated reporter. "

Hmmm...ESPN says it won't be released until Feb.3

Yeah, I see what you're saying. I corrected myself after looking at it again.

I do agree with this. When the Red Sox traded for A-Rod in 2003, I was ecstatic. Obtaining Rodriguez, a gold glove winning SS, for Manny Ramirez, a butcher in LF seemed too good to be true. As it turned out, it was.

A-Rod has been a brilliant baseball player. Much better than Jeter or Ramirez, when you add everything up. He does things off the field, occasionally, that invite criticism, of course. It seems that the NY fans do not appreciate what a fine talent he really is.

Ya think? New York fans will talk trash about Boston 'driving the greatest right-handed batter since Hornsby' out of town....when arguably*, they have a better hitter in their own stinking line-up!

    *Arguably, mind you.

There's never any room for facts when discussing Alex Rodriguez's performance

LOL at this comment from Baseball Think Factory:

A 160 OPS+ from a 3B isn't a winning performance? Maybe one reason the Yankees never won a World Series is that Torre was spending his time trying to improve the performance of someone who didn't need it while ignoring those that did.

I'd wait to read the book before judging how much of any of this Torre actually did say. Until then, it's the NY Post's description, and they've sold a lot of papers in recent years by sensationalizing anything A-Rod related.
