Right now there's interest on both sides, but the Mariners can't sign Abreu unless they shed salary.
Yeah I have both up there and the Abreu signing says something along the lines of "If you see the Mariners trade one of the bad contracts expect them to sign Abreu" or something, thanks for the info though :>

I like Abreu but I don't like his age. He has a cannon for an arm, but then they will be trading away Ballentin who could be good.

And despite a great arm, Abreu is terrible defensively.

Basically, the rumor states that the Mariners are in talks with an AL Central team in getting rid of either Silva, Washburn or Batista and Clement/Balentien/both for a young corner outfielder with solid defensive skills and one strong offensive season under his belt, and minor league prospects - at least one pitcher.

In one sense it is nice that one of those pitchers could be gone but scary that Clement, Balentien or possibly BOTH could be gone. Keep in mind this is JUST A RUMOR. Speculation so far points to the White Sox and Carlos Quentin.

I can't see how the White Sox could even dream of trading Quentin for that kind of package. I would think it would be someone like a Mark Teahen for Washburn and a couple other pieces (from both sides) mixed in. I think M fans might be kidding themselves if they think they are trading for Carlos Quentin. I guess it's not impossible, but that seems extremely far-fetched..unless the ChiSox GM is on crack.

The more I think about it, I can EASILY see the Royals trading away Mark Teahen and a decent prospect for Jeff Clement and one of those pitchers the M's are looking to dump. The Royals are looking for more back end rotation candidates and the catcher position is the weakest in the organization..and Mark Teahen has been pushed out of a starting OF job....I could easily envision this scenario.
My runs created per 27 posts (RC/27p) was 12.4 last year. I should've been MVP.

I'm not so sure the Mariners would really be interested in trading Morrow away for someone like Teahen even if Washburn is sent with him. Another name that has been thrown around is Delmon Young. We'll see what happens though since at this point it's just a rumor and nothing more.

and as for Abreus arm in the OF, I'm fairly certain if we do sign him he will be our DH. Unless he says 100% that he won't play DH; Z has made it perfectly clear that he loves having a great defense and I don't see him bringing in Chavez to split time with Abreu and then continue with a platoon at DH. In the field he's just going to hurt us.

I don't think it would be for Morrow.

Me and the other KC fans currently discussing this are thinking this.

Royals trade Mark Teahen + good pitching prospect (Blake Wood, Carlos Rosa, Julio Pimentel, Danny Gutierrez, etc...not sure which one, but a quality one)

Mariners trade C Jeff Clement and Jarrod Washburn.

We think this makes sense for a lot of reasons. The Royals would love to move Teahen, b/c he's a 4th OF for us and he's making far too much money for a 4th OF (after arbirtaiton...over 4m probably). The Royals would love to acquire a starting catcher..it's by far our weakest position both at the MLB level and throughout the organization. The Mariners would love to move Washburn's salary to free up money for an Abreu-like signing. The Mariners could use a starting pitching prospect. The Mariners might not miss Clement too much, b/c he has defensive concerns (from what I hear) and have Adam Moore coming off a good year in AA.

I'm not going to say that this trade will happen, but I could see it being a fairly good trade for both sides.

    Re: Official Mariners Thread

If we were to only have to give up Clement and Washburn then I would love that deal, but the rumors have thrown Morrows name in there which, if it's true, seems like a bad deal no matter who you get if you couple him with Washburn.

Clement/Washburn for Teahan/prospect? That would be awesome.

Let's just hope that they don't do something stupid and ship Morrow off with Washburn just to shed some salary for one year to make room for Abreu

Updated the Misc section with a nice comparison article that compares our 2003 team to our current 2009.
