I think Mientkiewicz is a great pickup. I can't imagine he doesn't make the roster, and he should do better as a bench guy than Sweeney, and probably Nomar.
I wonder what the 25 man roster will be exactly... here's my projection:
Catchers: Martin, Ausmus
Infielders: Loney, Hudson, Furcal, Blake, Loretta, Mientkiewicz, Hu
Outfielders: Ethier, Kemp, Ramirez, Pierre
Pitchers: Billingsley, Kuroda, Wolf, Kershaw, Vargas, Schmidt, Broxton, Kuo, Wade, Mota, McDonald, Beimel
I think the Dodgers will bring back Manny and Beimel... It would make a lot of sense to keep DeWitt at AAA. Without seeing any of ST play out, I'd have to put Vargas as the favorite for the 5th spot, just because he's solid and seems to be more of a given than Schmidt. But Schmidt pretty much has to be on the 25 man roster, so he should be in too. Troncoso got rocked yesterday, and might be best served as a starter in AAA.
I'm thinking Young, Abreu, or one of the slew of pitchers invited to Arizona would be the next best candidates for the roster. You'd probably want Young or Abreu there, since I've already listed 12 pitchers, and the bench is a bit devoid of power. Not that Young or Abreu are sluggers, but they're something. The plan seems to be to get Abreu some reps at SS so he can serve as a utility guy. The competition is probably between him and Hu as it stands. Young is kind of an outsider it would seem, and is probably competing with Repko and Mientkiewicz for a spot.
What happens if Schmidt throws badly in ST? Does he accept being sent back to AAA, or do the Dodgers release him?
Also, I'm really rooting for Jeff Weaver. I want to see the local guy return to the form of his potential and earn that fifth spot. I just think Vargas will take it because he's far more consistent and has less of a track record of stinking up the mound, especially recently.
MY projection is on the first page
Young has some pop. Two problems though. 1) he's out of options 2) it's tough for a kid to make his way as a bench player-the did well last year considering the small number of AB's he got.I'm thinking Young, Abreu, or one of the slew of pitchers invited to Arizona would be the next best candidates for the roster. Maybe he's throws poorly because he's 'injured'? Or maybe he pitches well and earns the 5th starter spot. What happens if Schmidt throws badly in ST? Does he accept being sent back to AAA, or do the Dodgers release him?
I'm still really concerned with Kershaw as the #3. Yeah he's good, but as a young guy easing him in a little more would seem prudent.

Manny has rejected their latest offer. In the release, Dodgers' owner Frank McCourt expresses his frustration with Manny and Scott Boras. He says the Dodgers are negotiating against themselves and improved their offer despite the economy.

5:43pm: Jackson cites a "well-placed source" who says that Boras responded to the Dodgers' two-year, $45MM offer with a counter proposal of two years and $55MM.
Jackson also writes that "it was Boras, not the Dodgers, who requested as far back as last fall that a portion of the money be deferred so that the total value of the package could be greater."
Jackson notes that there is currently no offer on the table and that "it doesn't look like this is headed for a quick resolution.

Ramirez apparently now wants a contract in between the two-year, $45 million contract without deferrals that Boras proposed on Friday and the team’s two-year, $45 million offer with deferrals that Boras values at $42 million.

"We didn't get a yes answer, and that's the issue," McCourt said, "which, by the way, Scott is entitled not to say yes. That's how it works. But we're entitled to say we're at the end of the phase of a process here. We're going to take it through at least today and the opening of this facility. There will be no news on Manny today.
"At some point, and you'll all know when, we will resume discussions, because we do want Manny. We do want Manny to be a Dodger this year."

Manny Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers finally reached some common ground in their negotiations, a source close to the talks told ESPNdeportes.com's Enrique Rojas.
Ramirez
After multiple failed attempts, Ramirez and the Dodgers agreed to general terms Tuesday on a two-year, $45 million deal, a source told Rojas. Another source told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that obstacles still remain to completing the contract.
Agent Scott Boras told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick that while he has been in daily contact with Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti, no agreement has been reached.
"We are in discussions and we have no deal in place,'' Boras said.
Boras would not elaborate further on the status of the talks.
The outfielder was expected to travel to Los Angeles on Tuesday night. The Los Angeles Times reported that Ramirez is scheduled to meet with Dodgers owner Frank McCourt on Wednesday.

If McCourt is satisfied, Ramirez will take a physical in L.A. and could be on a plane to join his teammates at spring training in Arizona later Wednesday.
Manny's a Dodger!
What a lineup...
Furcal
Kemp
Ethier
Manny
Loney
Martin
Blake
Hudson
So much depth. Very, very solid from 1 through 8. If Loney improves on his '08, you've got 8 above average hitters in this lineup, and at least 5 guys (Furcal, Hudson, Kemp, Martin, Manny) that are well above average offensively at their position.
I like what I'm seeing.
Now let's get Pedro.![]()
Damn. I hoped Manny would go to the Yankees. Would've been fun to see pitchers go up against that 3-4-5 trio.
I much prefer to see him in blue than pin stripes. Maybe next year
that was the weirdest negotiation of a FA contract i think i've ever seen. but hey...it is manny.
