Contact does not cover that, because there is more to not making outs than contact.
Juan Pierre is a good contact hitter, but makes a ton of outs. Adam Dunn is not a good contact hitter, but is very good at not making outs.
You saying Jim Edmonds and Steve Finley have similar batting averages completely ignores that Edmonds has a big advantage in on-base percentage, which is a huge part of the reason why he's so much better than Finley.

There are more types of outs than strikeouts, and batting average measures how often you get a hit, not how often you get out.

Look at On Base percentage. It combines hitting for average and walking. It will show you how important walking is. Dunn has a MUCH higher OBP, which produces more runs. Peirre does not walk much, negating his scoring value.

Once again, there are more types of outs than strikeouts, and batting average does not measure how often you make outs.
