Ramirez is a very good defensive shortstop.

From what I see Ramirez is above average, defensively, but less than "amazing". He is the best offensive SS in the game, challenged only by, who...Reyes, maybe?

"Very good", "amazing", etc. are all huge overstatements.

He was terrible in 2007, and improved in 2008.

Ultimate Zone Rating (in runs above/below average):
    2007: -16.5
    2008: -1.0

    Fielding Runs Above Average:
    2007: -20
    2008: -1

    Revised Zone Rating:
    2007: .773
    2008: .840

That's three different defensive stats from three different places (Fangraphs, Baseball Prospectus, The Hardball Times) that all agree - he went from a terrible fielder to a roughly average fielder.

Not even. He's not challenged by anybody. He is far and away the best offensive SS in the game.

    Re: Franchise player pole

To expand on my last post, Ramirez has always been seen as a guy with all the tools to be an awesome defensive shortstop. He's still very young, and it's very easy to see that he's been working hard on his defense, and the statistics bear it out. I do think that in a few years, assuming he stays healthy, he will be a solidly above average shortstop. Right now, though, he's about average, which is a huge improvement from where he was at this point last year.

    Reyes and Rollins

Speaking of...each of them make about half the errors Hanley does (not that errors are the final word on fielding ability).

Yeah, Hanley isn't too good of a fielder, his fielding pct. was .967 last year.

    Re: Franchise player pole

Hardball Times gives Ramirez 5.3 WS for his defense, which is tied for 9'th in baseball among shortstops. That would seem to place him in the "above average" category.

They challenge Hanley for "best overall shortstop", but aren't close to him in the "best hitting shortstop" category.

Which completely overlooks his improved range.

Fielding percentage, Errors, Wins, and Saves should be censored on here....

When you consider offense (great), defense (above average), and his age (barely 25), Hanley Ramirez is the best SS in the game, and would be an excellent place to start, I would think.

His defense is not above average. he is still the best SS, but his Defense is not above average....

I'd classify it as average right now. But, as I said, going forward, it's probable it's going to be above average.
